Plucking with picks during solos

I've been playing the bass previously, and only recently converted to the guitar. I'm not used to playing with the pick, especially during solos, where i tend to hit other strings.

I tend to pluck the strings downwards only, causing it to be slow, as i can't really pluck in an up-down motion, my pick just keeps getting stuck between the strings nomatter how hard i try. Any suggestions on how to train the up-down motion? and how close do i hold the pick to it's edge if im doing the up-down motion for plucking?

why don't you continue using fingers? finger picking is still the most efficient picking style around, and since you have a bass foundation, you should have no problems getting that right...

I prefer plucking with my fingers, however, the songs that i play require the tone created using picks, much higher than the sound created by using fingers, which is much more mellow. =s

Hmmmm.........well bro i started guitar on the classical, which requires a lot of fingerpicking, similar to bass. All i can offer is that u gotta practice more and soon u'll get it right. Play scales slowly with a metronome up and down until u get it. Then slowly increase speed. After mastering this, do the same with the metronome, but this time substitute the scale with watever riff/lick/solo u wanna learn. It worked 4 me, dun see why it can't 4 u. Cheerz bro!

Finger picking on a bass is not exactly the same as using a finger picking style for guitar. With abit of classical background, I understand you use rest strokes for you bass playing? This is where you pluck with the finger until it hits the heavier string above it.

What most people refer to when mentioning finger picking is using the fingernails to free pick the strings.

Doable with the electric, but i absolutely hated having long pointy fingernails :?

Hmm.

One way to go forward is to practise the solo slowly, bit by bit before increasing your speed. Trying using a metronome, and add a healthy dose of patience! :)

i can pluck with the guitar style, as in like using my thumb, index and middle finger for plucking. I'm just not used to playing with a pick, as the songs im playing doesn't sound really nice when i pluck with my fingers. It's too mellow.

take a pick and start playing
it took me a few months to fully get used to playing with a pick then fingerpicking
