Plexi, Plexi, Plexi!

the DLS is highly rated by many people.. i'd have gotten it if i was after a marshall sound. but i tend to dislike tones like those... can never like that biting/high mids kinda tone.

This reason is why I got rid of my DLS. It made a great overdrive for nice ZZ Top blues or somethings. But it didn't have that top end sparkle and bite. I was basically looking for that Van Halen I tone.

Actually Marshalls are inclined in the mids and are really biting and bright.

I stack my DLS into my MIJ Boss SD-1 to get more gain, tighter low end and more bite. I prefer stacking to get more gain instead of having high gain settings from a single pedal.

Newbie: Get a crunchbox la...

Hey, I truly recommend the BSIAB II. It sounds great, and surely falls into the 'marshal-kind-of-sound' domain. And, what can be more fun than assembling your own pedal? It is like playing lego when you are a kid, but this 'lego' can make your guitar scream. In addition, there are a 1000 and 1 mods out there, which you can find on the diystompboxes or equivalent forums, to alter the tone of the BSIAB II to your liking. Ever since I started on the BSIAB II, I seldom buy any pedals and successfully purge the GASing urge. I tell you, DIY is addicting.

OH YEAH totally +1

I got a BSIAB II built it was so damn cheap and it sounded phenominal. Its a poor man's Crunchbox that sounded bigger and more dynamic. Had heaps of gain too. The downside was it was really noisy man..

The great thing is that there are so many tweaks to the circuit that can be found on the internet. Want more mids, more treble, more transparency, less gain, more gain, just go search up the forums.

Its really cheap. If you can DIY yourself even better. Go google General Guitar Gadgets.

Dudelove, ur BSIAB was noisy? I feel sorry for you, it could be the transistor, heard they tend to vary slightly from one to another. My unit was good, no noise, no nothing, even in bypass, everything seems... quiet.

Anyway, doing a little google search, you can see that there are some rumors saying that the BOR, DLS and the Pinnacle, are based on the BSIAB. I am not sure how true it is for BOR and DLS, but I ever opened up a Pinnacle and traced the PCB and compare it against the BSIAB, and I found that everything from the input up to the tone stack section is about 70% similar to the BSIAB. In fact, the Pinnacle differs from the BSIAB mainly by having an extra section for contour, followed by another amp stage. For that, the Pinnacle cost almost twice as much as the BSIAB. If you are adventurous enough, you may DIY mod your BSIAB for no more than 20 bucks. Cheap!

I'm probably gonna be laughed at for this but....

Newbie, if ur on a tight budget like me, u can consider using the Danelectro Cool Cat pedals for ur versatile gain needs, can cover from Plexi to JCM800..I use the Drive V1, Drive V2 and Metal I pedals for my needs...just remember to set ur amp settings to clean. I use my Drive V1 as a boost (1st in line)..Drive V2 for old school Marshall sounding, think 60s-70s tone and Metal I for 80s Marshall sounding (more oomph)...these pedals really work well with my Vox AC4TV amp.

Hope this helps! :)
