Pickups for Downtuned Guitars

i'm not picking on anyone, just my nose when no one's looking...

Something's not right... Sub's posting pics?!

sorry... can't find pics of me picking my nose...

edder: how much 'heavier' is the Elixer set? the thickest i've got is a .059 for the bottom most.

Do give the Suhr SSH+ or Doug Aldrich model pickups a go. They are about 30-40 bucks more then the dimarzios. They are some of the best high gain pickup with really great cleans and punch.

they're 68 if i remember correctly. elixir webbie should have the details.

I'm totally switching to Elixirs, not cos of the tone, which is not bad at all BUT for my non existant playing habits. I like to pick up any guitar from the bunch and have "fresh" strings all the time. Elixirs does it well.

ok, the threadstarter has returned from a 48 hour hiatus from soft.

Goose, i like the idea of the drop zone, but its a bit out of my budget, and i can;t count on CNY bringing me any cash. Stingy relatives!

Sub, i like active pickups, but then, i like to have a more organic tone as well.(ok, quite bullshit for heavy brutal metal) emg's are just quite sterile.

i was thinking of using 10-46 ernie ball slinkies, but i guess it looks like i;ve gotta change to 11-52's. or mayb i'll go for the Zakk Wylde set of string. 10-60 if i'm not wrong. Think i shall go with duncan jb's, cuz the mids should balance out the sound of the low strings. i THINK.

thanks a lot guys! :)

My pacifica is also permanently down-tuned to standard D. I'm currently continuing my 10s (due to excess packs of strings, i buy them by the the tens) daddarios. I'm considering 11s but i'm afraid should i require to tune in standard E for what ever reason, it would be a lil too tight.

My fellow band guitarist also uses 10s on his RGT, down tuned to standard D. He recently got an air norton for neck and a d sonic for bridge from the last sweelee sale. I think beez recommened him to install the bar towards the bridge as recommended on demarzio's stie for drop tuning. I've personally tried it on clean channels and on distortion and imo, it is not muddy nor is it too fat on clean channels and its very chuggable on heavy distortion with the highs being quite sharp and able to cut through quite a din for solos on flat EQ.

For me, I'm using a 90s Tonezone and i think it sounds almost the same whether i tune my guitar to standard E or standard D. No mud with that freaking "wah" voicing every hard picking (i wonder if newer tonezones have the same properties). For my neck, my protrack is really tilting towards a lil mud, which is intended for my sweeps, fast running notes and some versitality for clean picking/arpegios.

'no pickups no sound' - subversion.

yeah what a smart ass subversion....ii obviouslymeant ' you don't need pick up to sound heavy' .

a strat can sound heavy with good eq-ing and heavy strings.

agree with you there. if you have several guitars, assigning one to accomodate active units would be worth it.

I've 2 guitars only sub. i would install emg's in my V, but its really due to an overwhelming dislike of active units.

other than emg 81/85's, anyone tried the new duncan blackouts? i might be tempted to go for them if they sound better than emg's in terms of clarity and warmth in tone.

I've heard quite a lot of good things about them in comparison to EMGs, can't hurt to give them a try...
