Sub,
As always, you are my hero
. As it is I am already running out of space. how do you find the place to keep all your gear??
Anyway, been doing some mods on some of my gear so thought i would share
1. Ibanez SZ320
I like this guitar quite a bit, so not much was done
- Added a push-pull on each volume pot for individual parallel/series pickup switching, and removed the coilsplit on the 3 way switch.
- Decided to change the original chrome pickup rings to cream, which matches the cream binding perfectly.
2. Ibanez SAS36
Construction of the guitar was great but was not a fan of the standard pickups at all
- Fender single coils in neck and mid. The standard single coils had vintage stagger magnets which drove me nuts due to the volume drop from G to B striangs especially, so changed them to a pain of non-staggered Fender pickups. Also found out that Ibanez uses non standard sized cutouts for their single coils so had to do a lot of filing on the pickup bases to make them fit, killing one of my pickups in the process!Argh!
On the plus side, i love tha fact that the white single coil covers match the white binding, have some black covers too but the white just seemed to fit better.
-Dimarzio Air Zone in bridge. The true-duo pickup sounds great in theory, but in the end they were an unacceptable compromise. In single coil mode the sound was ok but no hum-cancelling when combined with the middel pickup, not ok where i play! In humbucker mode the sound was just pathetic, all highs with no mids and bass.
Now it sounds great when split and fantastic in humbucker mode, with more than enough bass to tame the thin mahogany body.
- Grover Locking Tuners
Haven't made up my mind on these yet, tuning is easy and trem work now super stable. However, the past 2 times i changed strings i have had trouble with the G string not fully locking. At first i thought it was the tuner, swapped the tuners and still happens. Seems to be a design issue. In retrospect I think maybe the Planet Waves locking tuners may have been a better option..
cheers,
geoff
