pedals for soloing

Friends,

I need some advise on what distortion/boost pedals to get.

I need pedals that have balls which allow me to be the loudest in the band when i step them.

And im hoping for nice tone from the pedals, preferably like slash's tone?

Regards.

What guitar and amp are you using?

Personally i think that being loud is one thing, more important to be able to cut through the mix. Probably more mids than treble and bass.

you'll probably get answers ranging from danelectro to high end boutique stuff. Many's been asking questions such as this.

so pretty much, you got to try it out personally.

Well, to answer your question directly, you can take a look at modded Tube Screamers or their clones with added bass for 'balls' This can give a nice mid range kick to your lead sound, without cutting bass like stock TSes do. You gotta have an amp that has tight bass though, to prevent the bass from farting out.

You might wanna look at the Danelectro Transparent Overdrive too, for a cheap and great fix (I am using one). It is versatile can get do what a TS can do and more with its versatile EQ like adding more treble and bass or more mids by cutting both and boosting the volume.

As rimuel said, go try them all out:) cos you never know.

If ur looking for cheap pedals for ur distortion/boost needs...try out the Dano CC pedals...btw, I'm selling my CC Metal and CC Drive V2 pedals, PM me if ur keen ;P

Loud Stuff

It's best that you maintain your guitar level with the rest when the vocalist is doing his stuff and not to annoy the rest. But it's important that your sound have to be louder when doing your solos. Period. So why not use a reliable EQ to enhance your tone cos it really makes a difference in your sound envelope. I personally am using one. For instance; your dist pedal vol is at 40-50% and your eq pedal is on with a flat setting(all in a straight line in the middle inclusive of the volume), you won't have much of a difference. But the moment you tweek the freq's, you can tailor your own custom tone and it's louder and able to cut thru the mix even with the vol set at 50%. I'm sure you guys have experience the time when the soundman don't even bother to bring up the volume of your guitar when you do the solo. Frustrating right? Currently been using the MIJ BOSS GE7(graphic eq with 7 freq's) since the late 80's. Would'nt play a gig without it! Just sharing some good stuff. Enjoy!

+1 to piperjack's input. Sometimes its not another distortion pedal or boost that we need, its simple things like proper EQ-ing of the sound. However, if you still think you require a pedal to cut thru the mix, i recommend the Wampler Super Plextortion from SV. Amazing sound, this thing can do anything from blues to near-screamo metal. Its got am edge to its tone, meaning it'll be able to cut thru the mix in the scenario you mentioned. Sure it may be pricey but i think it'll be money well spent.

Thanks piperjack and loldude333!
That's really helpful.
May i know where can i get the Super Plextortion and BOSS GE7 and how much they cost if i buy in Singapore?

If ur budget slightly lower, try Mr BIG Power Distortion by SHARK tuimusic.com at Guitar77

To cut thru mix, get clean boost pedal with tone control or just an EQ pedal to shape the sound (Beta Aivin EQ-100)

i pretty much dig the visual sound jekyll and hyde. with the overdrive and distortion together, the tones you get are pretty much steaaaaaaaaaaaam. ahaha. cuts through the mix quite well too, with the distortion pushing the overdrive, theres more gain, mids and treble added to it. can get close to slash's tone with abit of tweaking i guess, didnt really try but yeah i bet its possible.

yeah i like piperjack's input too. proper tweaking of your amp's eq and also an eq pedal can do wonders.

if your budget is on the lower side, i would recommend Boss Blues driver!

130++ SGD. Great low ends with a good controllable high end slight distortion punch.

Boss' dirt pedals are mostly... bahhh. but BD-2, i like. :D
