hey guys...jus wondering....is it true tat the only way to perform gig is to "pay money to perform"? (As in selling tics and if you didnt sell enough tic, then you have to use your own cash!!) So its like "PAY TO PERFORM" kinda concept...Whats your opinion?

Let me check the calender, year is 2009. Yup, now is Pay to Perform era. 20 years has passed from the golden era when u get paid to perform.

Haha. Yea.
And they ask why the "scene sucks". People would rather poke at qwerty keyboards for 5 bucks an hour.

A topic nobody gets tired of discussing. Please, move on man.

If you don't want to pay to perform then look for other ways to perform. People who say that's the only way to perform are either just lazy, not resourceful or plain lousy.

I think you must have lotsa contacts and know the right places with the right crowds. Play well and you get invited. That's the best so far? haha..

Oh! Have friends who are loaded, so they will pay 2 tixs instead of 1.. haha

Not that I know many contacts though.. Dang! :(

If a band is tight and do great music i am sure u will be paid for playing...
Wondering why are there many complains about pay to play? If the band thinks they are up to scratch to get paid n yet must pay then don't play... simple.
Unless u are desperate enough to do gigs that u have to pay. If u think your band is up to standard to demand for a wage then u should be courageous enough to ask for it... Don't be shy... coz being shy will lead u to pay to play... I believe not all organizers are crooks But i believe there are crooks around that make use of young desperate aspiring musician kids to put up a show so that they can benefit from it.
Having said, some organizers are genuine and they provide bands a platform to gain exposure to music scene, gain stage experience, gain confidence or a platform for u to perform... In a way its actually very good isn't it? If your band needs the experience in performing then i guess if u need to pay to play is still worth it... Again, i say there are crooks around hor... so be smart n check out these organizers b4 committing.
On the other hand, some young kids think they are damn good as a band but in actual fact they really cannot make it! Suck big time. And yet complain so much why they must pay to play... I think these bands are just thinking too highly of themselves... It is actually not easy to get paid to play or should i say not easy to make a living as a musician. Firstly, be honest and access your bands standard... seek second opinion from experience musicians b4 u assume that your band can demand to get paid.

The above mentioned are meant to put a clear perspective on the subject about pay to play and is not meant to be offensive.

Yeah i think i agree with Lummer...If the band is good, people will be paying YOU to perform....there'd be no need to pay money to get your band to perform at someplace.

somehow my friends and i did organise a gig abt 2 years back at Lcube located at tanjong pagar. and the deal we had with the bands was that try to sell as much as u can. we'll give u twenty tix. u cant sell, u give us back the balance of the tix and not pay extra. but u still play... but somehow bands like one-eighty sold more than 40 tix for us. so i guess its more to i scratch ur back u scratch mine...

Thank you "Lovehurts" At least i knw there is someone that understands what i am getting on... Having said, i have missed out mentioning the most important point... Do music for the love of it and not money... U will never go far if your motivation is money.

Like i say there are good organizers and bad ones... As long as your conscience are clear and you are doing it for a good course then its fine. And for bands that complain... please also have to understand to organize such events are not easy, time consuming and nothing comes free... So organizers also need to pay for stuffs n allowing them to make some $$ is actually ok... So... don't complain too much...

Oh yes, i definitely agree with you again on that, Lummer. But i guess it can be a catch-22 situation for some bands/musicans who depend on playing music to earn their living. It would be a perfect combi if they played music 6 nights a week, loved doing what they were doing & got paid decently well for it.
