Ovation guitars

I m about to go for an acoustic cafe job audition here, now i ll have to temporarily drop the idea of a tube amp to get decent acoustics

I m about to get an ovation due to the good bargains found in ck music (owned by city music)

But i dun understand one thing, there is 3 type of wood which is stated,
- laminated spruce
- spruce
- solid spruce

I ask for a solid spruce, however the specs only stated spruce. Can anyone explain this?

Due to budget constraint, i ll have to make do with a less than Rm1k guitar,

I tested with a pathfinder, since i wanted to get one, then save myself having required to buy another amp, sounds good to me. The sales man also suggested that i buy a zoom 505-II acoustic, since i m getting the p15r, (Rm150 - bloody cheap)

But i would like to know if there is any other option which is if not better, still as good as this?

laminated spruce and spruce top is the same thing.. 8O
if it states SOLID SPRUCE TOP...now thats the real thing..!
so be wise... :D

dang... bloody sneaky huh?

How about flame maple tops? Is there any effects on the tone since it is also a laminated one? They look darn nice though..

I've not tried enough Ovations but to me the HEART of the ovation is the type of preamp they use on that guitar.

After all.... Plastic bowl back... ahem ahem...

And Ovations tend to slip to the front if you play sitting down.

I'd go for a Maestro with some nice preamp installed anytime. No resale value only lah.

...only those with prosperity belly

LOL, true... i tried those shallow bowls yesterday, all works out fine for me.. perhaps edder has a prosperity belly? heh...

But my concern now is that the guitar must be solid top, i ask the sales mans, and all of them say the Rm1000 guitar is solid top, but i am very much convinced though...

the preamp kinda sux to me, coz its too basic, only a few sliders and one vol control, unlike wat i see in their websites, the bat section and preamp sec is separated, kinda makes me wonder, if its really an ovation i am seeing...

Is those ovation value for money durin sales?

I love the tones of Ovations, plugged in of course, the higher end models do sound great acoustically as well. Huge sound...really huge sound, simply to die for. The neck shapes are great too! I almost pulled the trigger on an Ovation long neck a couple of years back

But I could never get used to the bowl though, tend to always slip off. Possibly due to my prosperity belly too! :)

But it's perfect for playing the guitar standing up.

I suggest you keep your options open though, there are a lot of great sounding electro-acoustics out there at good prices too.

I saw takamine in the luthers... cheaper than those in malaysia, got my eyes on EG-361SC... BTW, where is tht made in? :?:

I dun notice any timothy here in Msia, perhaps sinamex have one, there is a branch here in Malaysia..

:!: :!: :!:
Anyone tried BLAST! guitar?? how does it sounds? I find it pretty cheap..

ovation tends to fall off your lap...and it can be quite annoying..affect your playing sometimes..
try checking below models..see if u like their tone..but have to buy pickups separately..

Yamaha FG-730S Price: $488.00 at luther..good reviews

Dangggg.... just when i thought i m going over singapore for the year endsales around 25th Dec..... crap...

I cant afford another seperate pickup.. i dun wan the hassle of cutting those guitars side and put in the preamp or stuff like tht ... so i only opt for those with the pickup itself...

Is there anymore sales after this? maybe towards the end of Dec?

Get an Ibanez AW series acoustic from luther, good reviews and sound. Btw, if i'm not wrong Ovation guitars DO NOT feature solid tops IF I'M NOT WRONG. And if u want a more responsive top, get solid cedar top. Very nice sound. If u want, u can try Finas from davis. No resale valu though. But very bang for buck guitars, Finas.

I tried one of the ibanez recently, sounds good to me... but then again, it could be the marshall that they plug me to...

I ve got a few choice now:
- The ibanez AW 15-sce
- The takamine EG-361 SC
- Ovation CC 057

all around the same price range, however, the ovation is not a solid top guitar.. yet i still like their sound..

We have Farida guitars in our local guitar stores... anyone heard of those guitars? And i tried a brand called martinez.. bowl back guitar.. sounds great when plugged in... anyone heard of them?

I'd say go the Ibanez way. Its cheap, has solid top and the pickup inside is more than adequate for most styles of playing. As for the Marshall amp, which 1? If its an MG15CDR, means the guitar will sound even better on another better amp. I find the MG15CDR muddy and the clean isn't up-to-standard.

Hmm.. my best bet would be to try both...

they plugged me through a huge marshall acoustic combo... forgot the wattage... so it sounded good as hell...

I ll probably get the pathfinder as amplifier since i wanna use it for my electric as well...

The salesmen recomend me the zoom 505-II (acoustic) or something with tht name.. coz its doing a stock clearance.... bloody cheap.. only Rm150 (S$68)

O ok thats a wonder acoustic amp. I say forget the Ovation. U wld want a solid top for a more sustained sound. The Takamine and Ibanez looks good though. A nd yes, the Pathfinder is a wonderful thing. The 8" speaker still has adequate bass response. I love it, only my Hot Rod DeVille surpasses it. I went through many practice amps before i stumbled upon the Pathfinder. I haven't looked back since.

For the guit..everybody have different taste..and sound can be subjective..just buy the one sounds good to you...tone, resonance, the feel etc..
anyhow..solid cedar sounds mellower..its at its max best..
solid spruce (sitka, engelman, german etc)..sounds brighter..however u need to break-in the sound from 2 mths to years...(depend on the wood quality)..the sound will get better and better through the years of playing..

solid wood ..the resonance is good..but it can cause feedback for plug-ins..
laminated, spruce, selected spruce (in other terms..plywood)..ehhehe...they don't get that much feedback when plug-in..as resonance is poor

Still.............i wld prefer a solid top. Resonance is one of the 'Kings', it must be present in certain quantities. Feedback can always be rectified but lack of resonance? No, it cannot. Anyway, feedback can serve as a signal that ur pickup is working...........hee 8)
