Organisers say SINGfest 2009 could be stretched longer

SINGAPORE: SINGfest 2008 saw over 16,000 music fans gathering at Fort Canning Park last weekend.

Straits Times reports that the local bands didn't get paid! What gives? $5,000,000 budget and they couldn't pay local acts a token sum.

I'd prefer to see return to Womad. At least they featured local artist and showcased bands from all over instead of strippers come lip syncers like josey and the pussy cat dolls.

bro, whatever gig it is, local bands dont get paid most of the time..

hehe, perhaps you like to elaborate more...

and yes, i think its pretty bad that for the budget, local bands are not paid for the show. Of course, some might argue for the publicity, it might be good. I think its still lin lau hia eh toa lam pah lah! Bollocksss big bros big big!

Bring in better, more musical bands please and I'll go. I only wanted to watch Lost Prophets this year. The rest were lame.

The local lineup was splendid.

heh, locally, sometime its those lame bands supporter having the money to pay for shows wheras the diehard "iam harder than metal, more rocking than rock" kinda, no money to watch

paying crowds who can pay a lot, unfortunatly, sometime aint the crowd really into the cool music some of us here listen. But then, that prolly doesnt mean they have no taste. They keep promoters alive in the biz, we dont

imho

Yup agreed.

But those diehard "iam harder than metal, more rocking than rock" kind who can well afford it won't go. I didn't go. Only had two reasons to go. 1. Lost Prophets 2. Nicole Scherzinger.

Plus I was in KL for a conference :D

I hope that there would be more music fests with various themes in Singapore. :)

Here's a list http://culture.all-about-switzerland.info/swiss-openairfestivals.html for Switzerland in 2008. I think there's a typo. The line ups are 2008, not 2007, coz I saw some of the brochures.

Even though I'm not a rocker, I do recognise some of the band names to know that they are excellent.

Hopefully, the organiser of Singfest sees this thread. :)

Simple economics will explain why the local bands are not getting paid in SingFest.

95-99% of the paying crowd would be there, whether or not local bands on the bill.

We don't have much bargaining power- if any of the local bands chooses to ask for payment, they can easily be replaced by any other local band that is willing to play for free.

If any of us boycott SingFest because local bands are not going to be paid, its not really going to make a difference.

Sad but true!

Local bands will start earning more money when they can pull larger, paying crowds.

Sad but true,
Even with so many thousand people on day 2 the stage 2 acts only drew crowds of at most a few hundred.

I guess most folks were to scared to lose their space in the main stage crush! Or else it was just so crowded that they couldn't go out if they wanted to!

But i have to say i felt the day one line up was quite weak... Melanie Suborno was worse than your average pub singer.. Melie were just boring... Same goes for Dearest... They weren't even tight as a band... can spot the mistakes even via the video wall at stage 2!

Also, was i the only one who noticed that most of the time stage 2 had better, clearer, and more punchy sound than stage one??

I was quite disappointed by the sound production... esp when the sound was off for Panic's first few songs.. feel sorry for people who paid money just to catch them....

sell so many thousand tickets plus get loads of big sponsors to throw money at you because you guarantee an audience of so many thousand

visa's absolutely correct. the organisers can easily replace any band who wants start a demonstration

Melanie Suborno was worse than your average pub singer
Plus, her attempts to banter with the crowd just fell flat. Yes, she's into women's rights, but she went on and on about it, and in a language she did not appear to have mastered. It was just irritating.

imho, i would think the focus should not be on boycotting, instead, the payment to the local bands in token, other than free publicity. Its basic respect and courtesy.

Even i go geylang find someone to spread for me, gotta pay mah. Cannot be just because my member will make her/him song song kao jurong 69 time and back, i expect him/her to appreaciate me and dont ask for payment..

sorry, its crude i know, i apologise.
No peace, inner turmoil, in heat

Actually I think the local bands who played SINGFEST this year were all quite glad about it. Sure money is nice, but on the other hand they catered lunch and dinner buffet with free flow of beer at the stage two backstage area, gave free admission to the fest to the band plus crew, and on top of that they gave a bunch guest passes so we could bring friends in for free.

And as i mentioned earlier the sound gear provided was as good as what they gave the main stage! You don't get a chance to rock out on a stage like that often! (OK the guitar amps provided were a bit lousy but the rest of the gear rocked my socks! The bands at stage 2 actually sounded better than stage one for the most part (in terms of mix quality etc. not commenting on music).

So not bad really. Its not all about the money.

And yes I agree with the person who commented that the people with money are the ones who decide what kind of line up Singfest has. When they had all the trendy metal, punk and indie bands last year they lost 1 million plus.

This year with a line up lots of people complained weak the sell 16000+ tickets. So i guess they get the last laugh there and we can see what direction future festivals will go.
