optimum gauge strings

i tune my 25.5" guitar to CGCFAD (commonly known as drop-C). the most popular sets of strings for this tuning are probably those skinny bottom/heavy top ones, typically gauge .010-.052.

after trying the .010-.052 sets for awhile, i grew frustrated with the floppy low string. the tension for the lowest string is way lower than the next two strings as it is downtuned a whole step further than the other strings in relation to standard tuning i.e. the higher five strings are all downtuned by one full step, while the low C is two full steps down from the standard E.

after searching around, i discovered zachary optimum gauge strings. the idea is that each string increases in tension progressively, as opposed to normal string sets where the tension increases and decreases rather arbitrarily (more info here).

however, the .010 sets i ordered are meant for standard tuning, or, say, standard with all strings downtuned by a fixed amount, to preserve the relationship between the strings e.g. EADGBE down to DGCFAD. in order to tune to CGCFAD, i have to replace the lowest string of the set with a .056 string (trust me, this is based on quite a bit of calculation and research on my part).

so, ok, sherlock, where am i going with this, you ask? well...

1) where can i find .056 d'addario nickel roundwound single strings? looked around peninsula and closest match was .054 SIT stainless steel singles from davis. i prefer d'addario nickel roundwounds, but couldn't find .056

2) will a .056 fit a typical superstrat's nut slot?

for anyone who has doubts about why i think a .056 is ideal for my low C, i can reply to your queries with astounding mathematics (kidding, just basic arithmetic), but i'm too lazy to elaborate on the whole thing here.

string tension (highest to lowest-pitched string) for:

d'addario .009-.042 set, standard tuning (stock string gauge on guitar)

13.1 11.0 14.7 15.8 15.8 14.8

ZOG .010 set, (with .056 d'addario lowest string) CGCFAD tuning

12.9 13.4 13.8 14.5 15.5 16.6

rest assured that i got all my figures using both d'addario and ZOG specs, with some careful calculation. if i can't find .056 d'addario nickel plated roundwounds, then i guess i'll just try the .054 SIT ones. those will give me roughly 15.5lbs of tension when tuned to C, so it becomes:

12.9 13.4 13.8 14.5 15.5 15.5

this is ok, but isn't completely true to the "progressive tension" principle.

Long time ago ...ahem ...not that long.. oh well.. i used .54 sit and moved on to the DM Blue Steel for drop C (KORN kinda stuff)
I may have used all below but i found the LTHB best....with my then Les Paul Studio Lite...

LTHB.010.013.017.030.042.052
MED.011.013.020w/18p.030.042.052
JZ.012.015.026.034.044.054
DT.013.016.026.036.046.056

Nowadays its just dropped D ...with 10's !!

whoops, korn...i tune to drop C for converge, darkest hour and other extreme metal stuff. anyway, gonna repeat my questions before this thread becomes another one about everybody and their mother's preferred string gauges:

1) where can i find .056 d'addario nickel roundwound single strings? looked around peninsula and closest match was .054 SIT stainless steel singles from davis. i prefer d'addario nickel roundwounds, but couldn't find .056

2) will a .056 fit a typical superstrat's nut slot?

wow.. i have no idea why 10-52 didnt work for u, i personally use it to play drop b and it only sounds abit floppy for drop b flat.. hmm, never, anyway good luck for ur string gauge search, i also want to know what strings are good for low tunings :)

1) Dont know where to find just one .56

2) it definitely wont fit the nut or at least sit in properly for best performance. Most 6 strings guitar are not setup with nut slot specifically cut for .56 gauge. Either you replace the whole nut with individual slots cut to accommodate the thicker gauge or live with the imperfection of strings sitting ontop the slot instead of in the slot.

this one below not about my mother's preference nor father's dislike, but since father mother involved, then i will say. And i think my mother dislike people who drag mother father into playing geetar thou. Even if its joking, it aint funny. When needing help, at least have some courtesy when asking

downtuned, i will used zakk wylde signature or baritone strings or 7 strings set with replaced high E to some other gauge.

imho

haha. i didn't mean any sort of disrespect to anybody's parents. "everybody and their mother/mom" is just an oft-used phrase to emphasise how common something is. like, say, "everyone and their mom owns an epiphone les paul". obviously not everybody (and their mom) owns one. yea, it's just a flippant turn of phrase.

when i use .010-.052 sets, the .052 low string sits ok in the nut slot as far as i can tell...

that petrucci vid was interesting, but i've decided to try out the zachary .010 set with a .056 low string substituted in as i agree with the progressive tension principle. the feel should be something like a set of .009s on a 25.5" scale guitar in standard tuning (see my 2nd post above)

looks like so far nobody knows where to get the .056 nickel roundwounds. :(
