OFFICIAL- Show us your kits thread!

Thanks for such a detailed explaination bro! At least now we know what the actual costs are for buying a kit from overseas...which company did you purchase from? Some companies don't actually ship overseas with special priced products.

Nah, don't think you are going against any dealers. If its really a good deal, I would ship from overseas too. And I know what you mean about the snares, I must have about 3 non-pearl snares sitting at home too...

Hey bro, what snares have you owned before? Any pics?

Unless of course if they have already monopolized particular brands, then they do have the tendency to mark up the prices. I have had such experiences before in several prominent shops here in the past.

OFF TOPIC: BUT - while what you have said above holds true, people who knows of how the commercial world works, buy-n-sell, etc know of other certain ways to get around it. I am, of course, not in a position to state those ways due to certain obligations to relationships, etc.

The prices quoted as *list price* in Swee Lee and/or Yamaha are really for buyers who comes in and just buy, with no questions asked because the money may not directly be theirs. For example, buying for schools, churches, etc. To be honest, Yamaha and gang are not really interested in the retail business. They cannot meet demand with just the orders from schools alone :) Betcha not a lot of people know that. AFAIK: Retail doesnt really account for a large portion of their business.

That said, after having spent so many years in the commercial world and knowing how the supply chain works, you would know the nooks and crannies on how to get around for the best possible price.

Yo,

I do not have pics man, but we can have a meet-up one day at the lab and have a play I supposed. I have a brady jarrah ply 14 X 6" in Tanami Satin Finish, custom malmborg drums 12 X 4" in orange sparkle wrap (australian),
Old Tama Brass Snare 14" X 5.5" made in U.S.A. (about 16 yrs old). Pearl wise, I have my Masters Premium 14" X 6.5" in Emerald Fade fitted with black hardware, Joey Jordison Power Piccolo, 12" X 3" Mini-Piccolo in red sparkle wrap...

I'm eyeing the roc-n-soc thrones and aquarian heads at MF!!

As for the day job, it was working with singapore's largest education group (can't name who here but you can do some research though). I wrote syllabus and taught digital music production courses, percussion ensembles, conducted talks etc etc. It leaves me a healthier schedule for my wife & kid. Not some side business lah, I have never worked in any other field before. My first job was playing actually a gig when I was 17 and that pretty much decided my career.

By the way, I tried the demon drive on sat....and it blew me away! It is the easist pedal I have ever played. I max my speed without having to warm up! Very comfy.

The way to get the best prices is.... shhhhh... I'm not saying! LOL! Who you know rather than what you know perhaps? heh...

Low prices do help us musicians to acquire better equipment. Which with what little money we have we usually are not able to, thus helping us make "better sounding" music. I see this as one small way we can make truly great music with SG's great local talent.

As the the various companies, I do know that in order for them to last so many years, they have other more profitable businesses. These help to fund their side music retail ones. I also know that there was a take over some time back for one of them, without which the biz had to fold? Can anyone confirm? Some "8-hang" news here! LOL!

For me as a musician, hopefully they can pass on these other biz profits onto us through more discounts perhaps? (it's a wish to cai shen) Or even more sales periods so as to bring in fresh stock every quarter? This could also serve to test the market as to which are the more popular models/brands/choices musicians and enthusiasts prefer. Though not a huge market, Singaporeans do appreciate quality in every aspect of their lives, which I hope would help boost sales for top brands.

Maybe we are not ready for this yet, but that's left best for them to decide. They know the biz better than me. I am only a drummer ma... heh...

Brady drums! I remember using one and it was really nice. Could also be the size of it. 14x7 I think. Very different from the usual snares I use. Too bad it's not that popular here. Brady drums are very highly regarded in Aussie if I'm not wrong right?

Where did you first gig at 17? Hey, I think we off the thread topic liao... nobody here wants to hear us rant on without pics. LOL!

Pearl Demon Drive. I'm going to have a go at it next week then to see whether the demonic part is your feet or the pedals... LOL! Very comfy some more! I want custom made pedals can or not? Maybe suggest to Pearl to start taking orders for custom pedals? Just like Masters Custom drums? My shoe size is 8.5! LOL! Joking la...

Aye. Aye. Hear. Hear. I really couldnt agree more.

This group here in Soft is also a great start with a collection of so many talented and most important, passionate individuals, who wants to see and help develop local talent. AlvintheDrummer is one such individual :) I am still relatively new here but I have started a popular technology usergroup in Singapore in the early 2000s and have a hand in the setup of a couple others as that was ultimately my passion.

With that mass group of collective individuals, we had some good deals with hardware, software vendors - including publishers, MNCs, etc

All it takes is a few people of tremendous passion who are selfless in their pursuits and some street-smarts and negotiation skills and the group can have some power and influence ...

Anyways, we have digressed. I am sure the moderators/administrators of this group already have something cooked or may have something cooking - so lets now discuss this any further, not in this thread anyways.

I apologize for this digression :)

"Who you know rather than what you know perhaps?"

very true

Singapore market is pretty small, practically every musician you will more or less know...

in fact I have help you before chewy, hehe

I have been in the music business for past 20 over years, I love to serve passionate musician, not those that comes in and bargain up to the neck...

Honestly, genuine musician are good, they have these love for the tone or certain pc of equipment....and naturally I will want to fight for them a good price...

True enough, retail does not bring in much profit as compared to a music school

YOU THE MAN!
I was at Swee Lee just yesterday to try it! And now you got it!? I might want one too if the price is right! PM yr special price dude!!!! I want in on this pedal too! *slurps*

WHAT. that's ridiculous man. how much? (not your price, of course!)

I tried it out and saw the tag on the case. $1250! Price after discount is $948! Woot! Still keen?

I was thinking,
Those who can afford it most likely might not use it nightly at gigs and those who most likely would use it nightly for gigs would most likely not be able to afford it...?

How to meet halfway in this dilemma...? haiz...

I'm sure we can start a thread here to talk about helping musicians get good deals? However, I do know that there are already plenty of Sponsors giving good deals already. This could be a pet project to bring in exotic brands that are not available in the shops here perhaps? Which angle are you looking at?
