Poplar is a kind of wood. :)

From http://home.earthlink.net/~prof.sound/id14.html:

Poplar:
Poplar is derived from fast growing straight medium hardwood trees and is a less expensive alternative to Birch and Maple. Its finish can be somewhat green in color and is therefore used in the inner ply layers as substitute for more expensive and less plentiful woods. To my ear it takes on more of the tone of birch or mahogany than maple.

I do not know What kind of wood, but think it's a Kit from Pearl Company. I know Pearl had other Brand Names to other markets eg ZimZar, Apollo, Majestic etc are all made by Pearl during the 60s.

The reason is because - the lugs on this snare is exactly like those of ZimZar (I saw it in e-bay)...so

I Bid a Pearl 1960s Snare (Sparkle Red) and it cost me USD324.80 (including Frt) and
I just won yesterday...and

a Ludwig Speed King Pedal which I won today at USD167.50(including frt) to compliment this 60s Kit.......and (they use exchange 1.48 to one singapore dollars) total= S$ 728.60

PS: - Now having problem with payment on the snare (something cock-up in my ebay) the pedal went through on Payment.

If it's from Pearl, then highly it's poplar wood too. They usually wrap maple or mahagony for both inner and outer layer. Which means, it's a solid piece of poplar in the middle. Either than, or you can consider it's a three-ply or something.

I have a '60s Ludwig School Festival snare and it's poplar in the middle, with mahagony wraps. It's has a fat tone, but crap, it's so tough to get it to sound good.

And RD, sorry to hear about the eBay cockup and sorry for not being able to pick up your calls. Hope everything is good!

Go to this page and follow the steps to email eBay:

Hope that helps!

Haha thanks killerbee! That was informative.

I've always wanted a Pearl set, but I didn't know what the heck was poplar hahahaha.
