Hi,

Will a Boss OD3 give me more gain than a SD-1? Feel that my SD-1 pedal is a bit mild. I tried DS-1 but dun really like it, just want overdrive can le.
Thanks.

Pier.

Hi lppier,
Maybe you can tell us how you use your SD-1? Straight to a clean channel or for boosting?

The OD3 has more grit and gain than the SD-1 but the SD-1 is the smoother and warmer sounding pedal. An excellent booster or if standalone, it gives a nice crunch.

Hi,

I'm sending it straight to clean channel coz the distortion on my amp not that great. So it's not possible to get what I have (and like) on my SD-1 on the OD-3?

Pier.

What kind of music do you play?

The SD-1 only goes to light classic rock overdrive. It is not an OD3. The OD3 is much rougher and will give you a rock kind of overdrive.

Why don't you use the SD-1 to boost your amp's distortion? Guitar to SD-1 to Distorted Amp. Drop your amp's gain to like 1 - 2 oclock then for the SD-1, drop the gain, max the level and adjust tone to preference. Tweak with the SD-1's controls, rule of thumb being using LEVEL to boost, and minimal gain.

My amp's distortion doesn't sound good leh... actually I like the sound sd-1 gives me, but just want a bit more gain.

I see..

Ok, it would be good if you could describe your amp's dist in greater detail.. .what are you not happy with..
And then tell us what kind of tone you like...
In detail pls... :)

Consider modding ur SD1?

Actually i find there's an upside/downside to SD1... the more fuzzy the sound, the nicer it is on the ears, but the more it's lost in the mix.

why not come down to WMUM at margaret drive to check out the modded SD1 on display. Testing is free, modding is cheap.

I forgot to mention that I usually turn the drive knob on the sd-1 all the way up when I play... that's why i tot maybe an overdrive with more "drive" would suit me.

Oh my amp's distortion, it sounds muffled, like something is holding it back.
I played with the shape and presence control but can't get something that sounds good to me. I like the sound when I switch to the clean channel, plug in my sd-1 and turn the drive knob to full.

You mean ,your amp's dist is so bad, and putting the SD-1 in front of it wouldn't do? Boosting your amp's dist with the SD-1 will colour the tone a bit, you might like it then.

Otherwise, perhaps the Boss Turbo overdrive OD-2, discontinued, will do.. its got nice warm overdrive that can go quite heavy but definately not metal. Got someone selling it on Luther's ads.

I'd recommend you try and get an SD-2. Its a discontinued Boss Pedal... and its got very powerful overdrive. Yet, it retains its warmth.

X2N Showcase

Here's a clip of the SD-2 in action. Guitar to TS9DX to SD-2 to clean amp. The guitar's using the X2N bridge pup thru out the piece ... the TS9DX is set to boost the SD-2, just to tighten up the sound a bit.

Thanks for the help! I tried putting my sd-1 into the distortion channel of my amp. It's sounds quite ok after fiddling with the controls. What I did last time was to use the distortion channel alone without any pedals. Guess I don't need any more overdrive pedals now.. thanks!

Buy the SD-1. Its cheaper. The OD-3 is actually a modern version of the SD-1 with more gain and stuff.

Go look for randolf and get ur SD-1 modded. It will sound even better than ur ts-9. no kidding. I just compared it yesterday at his place.

Btw where can u find the sd-1?

I already have the sd-1...
How much does it cost for a sd-1 mod?
Anyway to find the schematic to mod yourself? hehe

Pier.

i would recommend looking for randolf. not exactly bought in by his SD-1 mod (not exactly my taste) but probably u might have different thoughts. his would have a 3 way switch after modding so it's probably gonna be much more versatile.

I love the classic SD1 sound ... super smooth, got dat ... classic kinda sound ~ Guess wat u're looking for is an overdrive with crunch ~

I suggest getting a MT2 modded to an od with a seeing eye, by Randolf ...~
you got all those eq controls, allowing you to get the sound you really want ~ MY FAVOURITE MODDED PED ~!
The SEM allows to to get this .... natural warm tube overdrive ~!
want a bit more crunch .... add up the mids .... soo versatile ...~!

and you dun even need a dist ped .... unless u gigging ...~
Coz ... with the dist above 10 o'clock, wat you get is this really wild distortion
through a very very overdriven tube amp sound .. ~!
solid .... ~!~!

I would recommend the OD3. I use the OD3 as a boost to add sustain and warmth to my VoxAd30 sounds. I set drive to 0 and it retains so much of the tone but adds so much incredible warmth and sustain. imo, Dont get the OS-2, or any turbo stuff. it won't sound as good. Perhaps marketing by Boss to extend the lifespan??

I've tried the Sd-1, OD-2, OD-2r but the sustain and warmth is no where near the OD3. The ts-9 is warm sounding but it doesn't have the juciy sustain my OD3 gives me. Maybe its more into its name than sound?? You can use it as a standalone to add sustain to clean or as a stand alone overdrive unit. Very versatile.

maybe this could help...
