budakbone : just a side info, that brrr sound is the noise of your soundcard hehe.
anyway this should be up my alley :
1) Start>Settings > Control Panel > Sound And Audio Devices > [Audio]
Sound Playback : make sure it's your soundcard.as you've said HD Audio.
Sound Recording : same. HD Audio
[Volume]
tick "place icon in taskbar" (for convenience sake , this is your windows software Monitor MIXER)
click OK
2) you'll see the speaker appearing in your taskbar. double click on it, or click Start Run sndvol32.exe
click [Options > [Properties]
under Mixer Device : usually there's 1 soundcard listed or 1 soundcard with "input" or "output" listed. either way. when you're in this area, there's 2 sections to focus on : PLAYBACK and RECORD.
in any case under PLAYBACK or RECORD = make sure all's ticked.
now choose RECORD mode, and click OK
3) this one ranges from PC to PC. or laptop to laptop, just set all to 50% volume should be a safe bet. my side displays : CD Audio / Microphone / Wave Out Mix.
Microphone is duh "records your microphone input" , Advanced options would be a "Mic Boost" (higher gain, more noise, but louder). first try without it first.
Wave Out Mix (your side may show "What U Hear" or "Stereo Mix) is recording whatever your windows is currently playing. that means sounds like MSN "dings" and myspace streams can be "recorded" here.
you're recording audio from your mic, so ignore wave out mix. tick Microphone mode. don't close the window yet.
4) open adobe audition
Options > Device Properties
[Wave Out]
<SELECT YOUR SOUNDCARD OUTPUT>
tick "use this device in edit view"
click [Change] (you'll go under [Playback Devices])
under Unused Playback Devices , just leave your "Wave Mapper" there, if there's any.
under Multitrack Device Preference Order : Use >> your soundcard.
then select it and click [Use In EV]
click ok
go under [Wave In]
Repeat chorus.
5) now to test whether adobe audition can detect your mic picking up sounds. under EDIT VIEW , press F10 to monitor. you'll see the level meters bouncing up and down.if it's working, you can start recording already.
btw i use cool edit pro 2.0, but the settings direction should be very similar, I used since cool edit 96 version. they haven't really changed the "outlook" of the settings.
this should help. otherwise it's a hardware problem.
