Newbie here :D

drumming is not just about coordination. grip, and technique and musicality are also very important. i suggest you find a good teacher. but if you think it's going to be easier then you're in for a surprise. drumming imo is much harder than guitar. so yea..don't lose interest. find a teacher.

Yes, drumming is way harder than guitar IMO also.

But ilovegm is already going for lessons with Alfe. So he's good.

LOL. My coordination was good and steady till the double pedals came along. Wahahaha.
Evident: I know there are threads regarding double pedal techniques and I've tried digging them out. But some had error messages so well, thought I'd just ask you.

1) how do you strengthen the left foot? More on speed.
2) My left foot just CAN'T stop following the beat of my left hand. It's like whenever I hit with my left hand, the foot will do the same -_-"

you could try rudiments on your feet instead of your hands? it should be able to improve your double bass speed/drumming over time. lols.

i dont have a double bass but i airdrum and double bass alot. once, i went into a studio and tried a real double bass. i could actually play it. LOL.

first you must train endurance then you can play fast. basically practice rudiments with your feet. once you can play them smoothly and slowly (at 60bpm) then increase the tempo gradually. everything takes time and practice.

for coordination you have to do coordination exercises. a very good book which i ordered off amazon (and you should too) is called "4-way coordination" by marvin dahlgren and elliot fine. i haven't started practicing it religiously yet but i've scanned through the books and it has very good exercises like:

play like right footx2, right hand x2, left foot x2 left hand x2, right foot x2 left hand x2, left foot x2, right hand x2..start at 60bpm and repeat until you can do it smoothly at 120 bpm.

there are 55 pages of exercises including polyrhythmic exercises, melodic and harmonic coordinations, four-way coordinations, and solos written for complete independence. check it out..it's a drummer must-have.

Okay i shall hunt for the book!
I shall do this in the train or anywhere. It helps man! Now I'm gonna look weirder on trains. O_O

Namrehs: Yeah. Rudiments. That's what I'm doing, foot alone is fine. but when the hands start to come in, it all mess up. It's like I gotta ask my feet to stop "listening" to my hands and have your own beats!

haha. you could try playing beats and grooves with your left kick instead of your right. you'll get better at controlling your left foot after awhile. lols. im practicing too!

the book evident introduced seems interesting. is it available in local book stores?

As much as you love drums, don't neglect your schoolwork please =)
Waargh, why is the whole world singing the same tune? o.O

Lol, side note: Been wondering if drummers can rotate their feet anti-CW while rotating hand on same side of body CW...

I heard it's physically impossible, but since drummers can multi-task with all limbs, maybe its just impossible for laymen?

Try try! I very curious to noe :D

i imagine it'd be very possible! XD

anyway on double pedals - make sure you get your pedal technique right from the start! or you'll have to work to correct my crap technique like i am now. practice the four basic variations - heel up/heel down + muted/non-muted.

when you play the drums it's not called multitasking. multitasking is when your brain has two concentrate one two UNRELATED activity at the same time..which has been proven impossible by researchers. the brain is incapable of multitasking, but it seems like multitasking because, the brain switches focus on each activity so fast it seems like you're concentrating on 2 things at the same time..which is impossible.

heel up/heel down + muted/non-muted.

Oh dear. More homework! LOL. And more weird movements in the train.
Pray I won't appear in STOMP. Die ah.

Okok, so basically what I wanna do now is to play more of left foot, do the "2x left hand and right foot" thing evident suggested.

And I've been watching heel/toe method on YouTube but hell, I don't quite get it. WAHAHA

practice air double pedalling, anywhere you go.be it in the trains, buses, on the toiler seats, home on your chair.but then again, feeling on double-pedaling on the REAL pedals is way diff from air double-pedaling.

endurance = hrs of practices.
or you can be like me, exercise ie:long distance running...i seriously think it helps my leg muscles when comes to maintaining 'fast' double-pedaling.
lol

I totally agree that the feel is different with air and the real pedals. I can easily say that I'm a expert in air drumming. LOL. But it's totally different when it's the real thing. :)

I know running helps in strengthening the foot. I'm gonna run like mad as soon as I can get green light for my injured ankle. :)

Lol, I noe XD
I just had drum lesson yesterday, stepping on the pedal was tougher than i thought...
Not very good at controlling my feet either : (

Sob, all those wasted primary sch days in tkd, can kick wood, can't kick pedal...

haha yeah, currently whenever i do my drills, i do twice the duration for my lefthand/foot than my right.

heel toe is quite okay once you get it i think :s just imagine you squishing an ant with your heel but you missed and it ran in front, so you lowered your foot to crush it with your toes. um.

...uh, since i think my explanation sucks, stick with the youtube vids. but keep trying, readjusting your feet, your weight etc; you'll find the sweet spot faster if you're actively trying to.
