New Recording Device

Hi guys. I have moved from an Augidy 2 platinum Ex to an M-audio audiophile 192 plugged into a behringer mixer for better quality. I guess it is better quality, but I cannot record "What U Hear", convert midi stuff etc..the m-audio is very tedious. Can somone reccomend me something similar to the Augidy 2 platinum Ex, with an extranel box extra and alot of features, but a little more high-end than the creative? Thanks..Budget around 4/500.

The-Warlord, why do you need "record "What U Hear" ?

Most pro audio interface do not have built-in MIDI.

Do you still have your Augidy 2 platinum Ex in your computer?

The Audiophile 192 quality is infinitely better than the Aw-digy 2?
1) Could you advise us what speakers you are using?

2) What exactly do you need to do? The Audiophile should be able to record what you hear - it can play back and recording simultaneously if that's what you are getting at.

Creative had to come up with such a term "What you hear" because their old Crap-blaster could not record and playback simultaneously.

3) There's nothing tedious. It all in the setup of the soundcard and software (er what software are you using)?

4) I suspect it's more of a user problem than equipment problem so hold your horses about upgrading 1st.

Basically, for example i want to convert midi to wav, and i cant, because when it says selcet device, nothing comes up..Also, say i want to record game movies, using fraps two, i select teh audiophile, but nothing is picked up. If i go to windows volume control, i can adjust the settings, but it corresponds with the m-audio volume control. When I go to properties in windows volume control, and click recording voulmes, ther is nothing there. Windows kinda hasent detected my sound card properly? But its all installed and in device manager etc... i dont really know..

>> Basically, for example i want to convert midi to wav, and i cant, because when it says selcet device, nothing comes up..

- what program is playing back the midi file?
- what instrument is playing back the midi file?
- how is the audio data recorded?

* this is the basic function of any audio capable sequencer so I find this extremely unbelieveablt.
* there must be a user fault here.

Sorry not familar with this program. But normally you would have to select the correct recording device within the program and not from windows.

I have exported the midi file from Guitar pro..a full band midi file..using (trying) various programs to convert to wav.
If I try to export it as a wave right out of guitar pro, it says to select the device, and all that is in the list is "line in". When i choose that, i can "start and stop the recording" i start the file in guitar pro, and when ti finshed it says "xxx.wav" has been created, and teh file is there, but just a silent file.

Sorry for losing my patience but WHAT INSTRUMENT IS PLAYING BACK THE MIDI -> you haven't answered this very important question.

Is it guitar pro? (does it have a built in synth?
Is it an external module? (u have to hook it up to audiophile 192 to record it)
Is it a soft synth ? (U have to check whether the midi/audio data path is configured properly)

lowjk, i suspect that he might still have a soundcard in his system. maybe those built-in onto motherboard kind? what do you think?

But as far as i know, i have disabled that in BIOS...

Microsoft GS WAvetable Synth? Is that it? If i select M-audio 192 midi, i get no sound...

I'll download the demo and try to check it out.
Will post later.

What did you disable in the bios?

You cannot convert midi files into wav files. Midi files need a sound source to generate sound. That sound source can be from: 1. your soundcard (ie Audigy), 2. external sound module/keyboards, 3 plug-ins (eg VSTis), Audiophile 192 does not generate sounds - most pro soundcards doesn't.

If you are attempting to get some sounds out from your soundcard, it has to be from your Audigy. And I'm sorry to say that you'll only get midi type sounds.

Can't help you here Warlord.
Downloaded the demo version but it refused to let me try to render it to wav (I think the function is disabled here).

i may be wayy off base...but if you are looking for a better card in the price range, might i suggest a Echo MIA MIDI? industry standard stuff, been using it for the past 2 years now. works like a charm and hassle free install and setup. cheers. sorry i don't play much with midi...

For simplicity sake, use Windows Sound recorder and we'll see how it goes from there.

Try this:

1) Open Sound Recorder
2) Click on "Edit" and then click on "Audio Properties"
3) Check that your soundcards for "playback" and "recording" is the same
4) Click "volume" under Sound Recording and make sure that stereo mix is checked and bring its volume level up.
5) Play your midi song using guitar pro
6) record using sound recorder

The file you are recording will be in WAV format. It should work

If I try to export it as a wave right out of guitar pro, it says to select the device, and all that is in the list is "line in"

Of course it is a silent file because there is nothing coming in from Line In for the software to record. Im not saying that you should plug your headphone out to line in.....but if you wanna convert directly from the software, it should have options like "stereo mix" or "Microsoft GS WAvetable Synth" Check the software's "Preferences" option.

**disclaimer** im suggesting this solution based on software/internal routing issues and NOT hardware issues.**

let me know if it works (or not)

EDITED: Oops!!!! i missed your earlier post which you mentioned that you've already tried to adjust the settings for recording but nothing appeared. Sorry abt the long-winded but redundant post. Oh well, try my suggested solution anyway for the heck of it.

Under "Sound Recording" I cannot adjust the volume or anything else. I can choose from M-Audio Delta AP192 1/2 or M-Audio Delta AP192 S/PDIF for both payback and recording.,..
