hey there, i've some problems with the volume knob on my guitar, i just bought it a month ago, and when i switch the knob on or off, there's this static sounds, sort of like something rubbing. anyway i can remedy this problem without going back to swee lee?

my guitar is an Ibanez RGT6EX btw.

I would suggest taking out the part and spraying contact cleaner on it, then turning it a few times to get the cleaner spread out within the pot.

if dont wanna bring the geetar out to anywhere,

1) Find electro contact cleaner, non oil based
2) Open up wherever the pot is situated
3) Spray contact cleaner into the pot with scratchy static sound(not too much though)
4) turn the pot few times
5) Plug in cable and to the amp, rock out time, while checking the vol pot and see if it still giving problem

and if theres still static sound, heh, dont bother spraying anymore,

1) Find anyone who can travel to your place and help you check out the pot
2) Buy new pot
3) ask that someone to help change the pot
4) Plug in cable and to amp, rock out time again, while checking the new pot

and if cant find anyone, then i guess will have to bring the geetar outside of house, visit either

1) Sweelee, if theres electronic warranty of somesort for geetar bought from them and let them know of the problem

or

2) Bring to any reputable geetar tech and have them check on the pot

remove vol knob, spray contact cleaner, wipe off excess, replace vol knob, rock away

I'll just go buy new pots.

The stock pots on Ibanez are... not... very reliable.

Problem is - you PROBABLY got to get pots that follow the Asian metric measurements, e.g. Gotoh. The mounting holes are probably drilled to that specification so an American made pot like those from CTS, would need the hole reamed a litttttle bit larger.

Reaming isn't a biggie but if you got a clumsy and/or novice techie mess up...

And yes, CTS is much more reliable than the Gotohs.

heh, that kinda reminds me, the cheapest tool to make a pot hole slightly bigger, inorder to fit pot with bigger shaft, is a scissor!

No joke dah, i used something like that to enlarge holes on pickguard, pedal enclosures and stuff. It works, but the pair of scissor wud be rather abused..

spraying contact cleaner could wash away the existing lube in the pot

if under warranty, go down and demand a change of the pot
dun take contact cleaner as the answer

thats an interesting point.

The lube inside, i believe wud be the for the smooth/weighted feel when turning the shaft of the pot.

for the actual working of the pot and static noise in it, i wud think that the path where the wiper leg travel, over the entire carbon ring might be a bigger cause for the static problem though.

mmm, perhaps some others can throw in their views.

oh thanks guys, i think i'll bring it down to sweelee

i have this problem also, and its somewhat related the the volume knob.

erm firstly, My pickups are the EMG 81s and 85s, i've no problem with the 81(neck). but when i use the 85, some amps cannot pick up the sound, nothing comes out. sound only comes out when my volume knob is turned slightly below max. Its an active pickup btw, anyone got any ideas?
