NEED HELP: Getting started with Home Recording

Hey there,

Im planning on doing some simple home recordings for solo guitar (acoustic and possibly electric) and I need some help starting out.

So far I get the impression that im gonna need:
1. A mic
2. Audio Interface
3. Recording Software
4. Monitors (optional)

Question:
Why do ppl still go for an audio interface + mic when there are usb mics out there (e.g. snowball from Blue mics http://www.amazon.com/Blue-Microphones-Snowball-USB-Bundle/dp/B000EOPQ7E) which can just send the recorded sounds straight to the comp?

Someone told me the audio interface can also be used to "play back my music" or sth like that, but I didn quite follow. I mean, i can still just play it off the comp right?

With the little research and scouting I've done, I'm thinking of possibly getting the following:
1. Mic - Behringer C-1 or Audio Technica AT2020
2. Audio Interface - Presonus Audiobox USB
Any other suggestions?

The shorter answer:
If you want a quality job, you get a group of specialists, renowned in their fields. Instead of a jack-of-all-trades.

There are many factors that decide why people do it that way, including the different characteristics that pairing different devices will give you.

The above 2 points alone should point you towards getting 2 separate devices.

Here are some of my home made recordings - http://www.myspace.com/jaredmartin1311

Equipment used :

Guitar (Ibby270 with dimarzio pups, bridge is superdistortion and neck is tonezone) -> ZOOMg2.1u -> PC (used adobe and cake walk for mixing and stuff).....and a lot of patience!!!! rofl

Now the zoom is connected via USB cable only but make sure that you have a tone ready for recording meaning the sound that you like then let your imagination do the rest (as well as technique and skill of course)

Drums is made from sonar cakewalk

Hope this helps you - you can experiment whit your sound first then take it from there.

get a Zoom H4n then get a Audio Technica AT2020
H4n's mics for acoustic guitars
H4n's inputs for e-guitars or bass
AT2020 for vocals (if you're broke to spend another $160+ now, you can still record vocals with the Zoom H4n's mics)

portable too.record when idea strikes.
