AS the title reads..

a beginner looking for a cheap but decent 5-string bass for practice...

budget ard 300-350.

hope can find one. like those sold at Ranking Sports and Music.

are you looking to buy a second hand 5-stringer?

no deals fit your criteria at the moment, but posting there would be the right place (:

alternatively, Davis does have packages for 5 string basses, IIRC. if they're not packages, they'd fit your budget for sure.

ok first and foremost, it is best for you to try out what you like, and just buy what you like if it's within your budget. no need to be too brand conscious, if you're comfortable with it and you're fine with the sound, it can't go wrong.

and yes i have heard of the brands. Music Theme, which is just around where Davis is, carries Shine and also this other brand J&D. worth a check.

for Ranking, i can't really remember what they have, but i assume that you've already been there to check it out yourself.

Davis carries Vantage, SX and LTD. LTD is the cheaper (but by no means much lousier) ESP, like what Epiphone is to Gibson.

alternatively, squat around for a good 2nd hand deal from softie.

take note that 5-stringed basses (and beyond) aren't exactly the easiest to find.

i agree with you. im not too brand conscious, for now. cause on tight budget.

Frens told me the J&D's were not bad.

i shall hunt for them soon. will be heading down there.

Ranking does sell Shine too. they seem to have more than Music Theme.
ok. and tks alot for the info. much appreciated.

Hi drumnbass, happened to try out a new 5 string stagg bass just for fun yesterday. The neck looks a bit old, but else the tones are very usable. 2 single coils. Its abt $350 at the esplanade maestro.

Advise you to bring a friend to give your chosen bass the once over before you buy, have seen quite a few guitars and basses w bad worksmanship (chipped wood, bad paint jobs, etc).

Aha, an OLP MM3, that's a good one to start off with! ^

If I weren't broke, it'd get that to complement my jazz bass V..

i would echo tidesofblood. follow where your ear leads you ;) u may end up liking the tone of a real cheap axe ;)

haha.. tks for all ur help mates. got my new 5-string from Zen. at peninsula. STagg one.. not bad la.. hahaha.. no time to prac real hard. hahahahah!
