wow, interesting stuff.
i think there are basically 2 questions here.
the first is:
- am i allowed to say it? (can i?)
and the second is:
- is it prudent to say it? (should i?)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
with respect to the first question, i apply the following principle, so long as my resulting action is not illegal. this principle is one you should be familiar with, the principle of cause-and-effect, action and reaction.
simply put, if you act stupid, people will treat you as being stupid. if you act dishonestly, people will distrust you. if you are funny, people will laugh. etc.
what this implies is the following:
- if people do A, knowing that B is the consequence, and DESPITE THAT, the person does A, it is not wrong for people doing B to do B (so long as it is not illegal/ethically unacceptable).
e.g. if you set your crotch on fire knowing that someone will laugh at you and call you stupid, it is not wrong for the person who laughs at you to do so. it's not their fault for laughing at your stupidity, it's your fault for acting stupid despite knowing the consequences.
people must be responsible for the consequences of their actions.
i typically apply this general guide to situations involving the second question, is it prudent to carry out a particular action:
if you have nothing useful or positive to say, generally avoid saying anything.
the reason for this is that personal statements have two effects: 1) they convey to others your character, and 2) they convey to others messages that exert influence, positive or negative, on others. This is true particularly if you are someone of note.
if you say things with no positive purpose, there are only negative outcomes. you may hurt another person's feelings, whose feelings are as valid as your own. and even if you don't particularly care about hurting peoples' feelings, you may find them useful to you in the future so it's wise not to burn bridges anyway.
whether you're emo or have a heart of stone, there is little-to-no value to being negative at someone else's expense.
so about this fat dude who dresses like a girl...
i guess, i'd say: why do any of you care?
- for the majority of you, his life won't drastically affect yours
- he probably gets enough hell from his own family and "friends" i'm sure, so he doesn't need more from any of us.
- he has decided to continue doing something that he's passionate about, even in the face of general disapproval (much like many of us who continue to put time and effort into music despite the general perception that musicians are stupid and broke)
- he needs to lose some weight, but there are some of us here who need that too
- he wants to be a girl(?) so what? it's not like he's gonna wanna sleep with you anyway.
Perhaps Roninriot could've considered more carefully about the consequences of starting the OMG thread, given the kinds of people who are prone to trolling on forums. that said, i don't think there was anything inherently wrong with what Roninriot posted, it may have been started with positive intent, but it was bound to attract trolls who would turn it into a negative thread and ultimately it is the consequence, not the intent, which will affect the subject/person of discussion.
i would just leave the cosplay dude alone, i guess. his life doesn't affect me, so i'm not gonna go out of my way to make my life affect him.
