My Response To James.

wow, interesting stuff.

i think there are basically 2 questions here.

the first is:
- am i allowed to say it? (can i?)

and the second is:
- is it prudent to say it? (should i?)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
with respect to the first question, i apply the following principle, so long as my resulting action is not illegal. this principle is one you should be familiar with, the principle of cause-and-effect, action and reaction.
simply put, if you act stupid, people will treat you as being stupid. if you act dishonestly, people will distrust you. if you are funny, people will laugh. etc.
what this implies is the following:
- if people do A, knowing that B is the consequence, and DESPITE THAT, the person does A, it is not wrong for people doing B to do B (so long as it is not illegal/ethically unacceptable).
e.g. if you set your crotch on fire knowing that someone will laugh at you and call you stupid, it is not wrong for the person who laughs at you to do so. it's not their fault for laughing at your stupidity, it's your fault for acting stupid despite knowing the consequences.
people must be responsible for the consequences of their actions.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
i typically apply this general guide to situations involving the second question, is it prudent to carry out a particular action:

if you have nothing useful or positive to say, generally avoid saying anything.

the reason for this is that personal statements have two effects: 1) they convey to others your character, and 2) they convey to others messages that exert influence, positive or negative, on others. This is true particularly if you are someone of note.

if you say things with no positive purpose, there are only negative outcomes. you may hurt another person's feelings, whose feelings are as valid as your own. and even if you don't particularly care about hurting peoples' feelings, you may find them useful to you in the future so it's wise not to burn bridges anyway.

whether you're emo or have a heart of stone, there is little-to-no value to being negative at someone else's expense.

so about this fat dude who dresses like a girl...

i guess, i'd say: why do any of you care?

- for the majority of you, his life won't drastically affect yours

- he probably gets enough hell from his own family and "friends" i'm sure, so he doesn't need more from any of us.

- he has decided to continue doing something that he's passionate about, even in the face of general disapproval (much like many of us who continue to put time and effort into music despite the general perception that musicians are stupid and broke)

- he needs to lose some weight, but there are some of us here who need that too

- he wants to be a girl(?) so what? it's not like he's gonna wanna sleep with you anyway.

Perhaps Roninriot could've considered more carefully about the consequences of starting the OMG thread, given the kinds of people who are prone to trolling on forums. that said, i don't think there was anything inherently wrong with what Roninriot posted, it may have been started with positive intent, but it was bound to attract trolls who would turn it into a negative thread and ultimately it is the consequence, not the intent, which will affect the subject/person of discussion.

i would just leave the cosplay dude alone, i guess. his life doesn't affect me, so i'm not gonna go out of my way to make my life affect him.

WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO FREEDOM OF SPEECH !!!!???eleve!1n11?? Maybe there never was one to begin with?

From what i see, i've been following the 'OMG WTF is this' thread and roninriot hasn't directed any negative influence towards cross dressing nor the boy who crossed dress for that matter. In oblivion to the fact that roninriot clearly started the thread just so we people could voice out our responses and share our views, some users actually took it as plea for attention???????????????????????????????????????? !!!!!!!!!!!!!11eleven11111n!1!!!!!!1!!!!!!more question marks ?????????????????? (??????? huhhh??attention??)

I digress, "Do not do things that you don't want others to do to you. Do not say things that you don't want others to say about you." As a matter of compulsion, keeping a shut mouth about others doesn't necessarily mean the others are doing the counterpart.

People stop breathing the obvious, one way or another you know you'll always have to face up to whatever the matter is having been 'swept under the carpet'

nirvana is really nirvana i guess.

i dont really see the point in continuing with this thread.
it has nothing related to music or whatsoever.

just so let to get my points across.
james has every right to do what he does.
he has given us soft, he takes care of it.
cleans it of the rubbish that we dispose.
if anything happens on soft, he is to blame.
plus he has a point when he says our actions determines the younger generation.

im sure james apologies for the remark he mark on the previous thread.
I bet he was just getting the message "how do you like it when someone treats you wrong" across to you.

that feeling that you felt after that remark?
its nearly the same thing as when fellow softies started discriminating the poor kid.

im going to sleep now. have good clean fun fellow softies.
*ive been awake for more than 38 hours*

James, thank you for respecting what I have done in the past for the scene and what I am doing now. I have always respected what you done as well, and in many posts and in real life, I do so to you. We owe you a lot for that, and I am thankful. In fact, I still respect you a lot, and nothing like this will change my opinion of that because I know you have dedicated money, time, and a lot of effort into making SOFT what it is today. That is something I thoroughly commend and admire about you. But let us not mix the two issues up here.

This is another issue at hand. This is the koptiam thread is it not, where we are not necessarily required to talk about music-related stuff (Btw, fashion IS related to music too). Throughout the previous thread, I raised nothing to do with the scene and I posted it in the appropriate section as well. NONE of us are only musicians, we are also individuals with opinions and individual thoughts. So not everything has to lead back to me being a musician in a previous band, does it?

That being said, I emphasize once again, yes, I made light-hearted of my examples to illustrate my point. I both applauded the cosplayer whilst maintaining my views on the matter. I did not force this opinion down the throats of others. But how is the issue of Mat Selamat's escape any different from the issuing of cosplaying?

If anything, by treating the issue any differently and subjecting it to more extensive conditional censorship, you are ACKNOWLEDGING that it is different, and in a negative way, in a way that spells out "HUSH, we shouldn't talk about it".

Now I ask you this, why shouldn't we?
Yes the scale of how it is affecting people is different, but who are we to judge the significance of an issue? Just because Mat Selamat escaped doesn't mean I lost my appetite over it. But I came across a blog on a cross-dressing kid, I found it fascinating, and I posted about it.

It is not like I went about saying it is 'unnatural' or it is 'socially wrong'. I said I find this to be wrong. But I myself cross-dress for the fun of it, I am merely saying that perhaps this is not for him. But I did not question his morals nor social standing.

SOFT is a 'safe' place for positive discussions yes. But just because a government wishes for a place to be 100 percent safe doesn't mean it will be. So does this mean that we don't address the issue at all? What you could have done is tell the SOFTies who were making fun of him not to be that way, instead of outrightly imposing that belief onto people. One of the reasons I joined SOFT, and the reason many of us joined SOFT, is because of our love of the scene. Yet there are plenty of topics that ALSO focus on the negativity of the scene yes? Should we wipe those off as well?

Like I said, just because it isn't said doesn't mean that it isn't there. And I was simply bringing a point up that was already in the hearts of some already. Anyone could have stood up to defend the kid extensively, and I think I partially did as well. But because you have shut down the post, all people will see now is you saying "This is wrong. Let us try to block it out". You have blocked out people who would have balanced the argument for the kid, have you not?

very nicely said serialninja.

responding to FrancescaAnn:
YES, they weren't any freedom of speech in Singapore to begin with.
Welcome to the real world

hello levan and james. i can't help but post this cos I believe that's how things work in singapore.

indeed james has no right to say whatever's on your blog. cos that's your pasal/your territory.

but levan, I feel that even if SOFT forum is after all an "open" forum. it's a "singaporean" (note it's soft.com.SG not soft.com) forum, and we do it the singaporean way. free speech CAN be exercised if it's for POSITIVE "peace/prosperity and progress" (familiar eh) , but try free speeching on what you (as an individual) think it's wrong or right and you'll find that it's not about who's being hypocrite here but who has the authority to do things in his own domain. and in this case, james has full right to do things his way and you're on his ground and thats the bottom line.

you may say that I'm taking sides or sucking up here, well I AM taking sides ,and i don't have to suck up to james as he don't pay my bills. I'm taking sides on the person who has done enough over the years to prove that his methods are more right than wrong and I personally seek james for advices on MSN as a highly EQed + experienced individual who can pass off a better judgement than I do myself and I'm very sure alot of softies here will agree with me. I ask EVERY individual I know whether they're on SOFT and they should go on it. because indeed it is the SG music WWW portal. and we're even starting to have really really young kids (IC numbers starting with T) coming down here and this is why I believe one of the many many reasons why james (and the other moderators unsung heroes) is trying to keep this forum as clean as he can. I am a married man and seriously next time if my kid turns out to be interested in music, the first place I can trust my kid to surf is soft forum. because why? if someone posts up something wrong or dirty/offensive under Kopitiam, the good nature of softies in here will usually post positive opinions against (and at times,educate stuff you can't learn in school) on what's right/white and what's wrong/black and what's behind the meanings of the shades of grey. there's good company in here.

there are times (forgot which thread) which I would disagree with james or other old-time softies's opinions but like what freeflowclass said, we don't react like you do. to me , I believe in iBoChap. to each his own. and besides if I (or every softie) had to disagree with moderators , taking them on. that's a seriously shitload of bandwidth wasted. (trust the man who had an urgent call from his webhost company to shutdown the old gigvideos site when some global punk website's owner featured my URL on the main forum) and then it all turns out : this freespeech ain't as "free" as you think.

20¢ worth

aye...
to me music was never about fashion.
it may be related. but nay, not music to my ears....

what most failed to see is that such discussion might lead to SOFT being targeted by media and government officials alike?

with that, what of james reputation?
what of the other fellow softies?

sometimes we should really just keep non related matters aside.
this is SOFT, its all about music. and i repeat though fashion is related, its not music.

you want to post a thread like that? why not post it on friendster? myspace? facebook?
im sure the management there wont close you down. or go post on your own blog and let people read it and leave tags. that will serve as a thread too you know..

okay for real, im going to sleep

I REPEAT THAT THERES NO SUCH THING AS FREEDOM OF SPEECH IN SINGAPORE.

work with the government and you will soon come to understand how things REALLY work.

as bro FGL always says, "welcome to the jungle"

okay, time to tuck in.. nite everyone.

not wanting to waste bandwith on this thread.
i repeat bandwith

i'm sorry i must've missed it. did anyone say there's freedom of speech in Singapore?

last i heard, we didn't have a First Amendment ruling.

although even with the First Amendment ruling, it's not like there's complete freedom of speech in the US either. you can still be charged for inciting hate/violence against another person/persons/community. just like in Singapore.

that's just one example, Singapore and America's laws on freedom of speech are quite similar, with just a few exceptions.
