Hey bro

One thing about using headphones to mix is that you should look out for something that gives a flat frequency ie no extra bass or highs. You want TRUE sound, not nice sounds. But I'm sure you already know that :D so...

Audio Technica Have some pretty cheap head sets that you might wanna consider. ATH-M40 cost less than 50 bucks at some places. One thing about AT headphones (talking from personal experience) is that they are not meant for rugged use, so if you are the kind who keeps dropping them, best not to get them, heh.

Currently though, I am personally looking at the Sennheiser Evolution series headsets, particularly the EH350. Last time I checked at Hungs it was selling at around $150. I haven't personally tried this head set but I have used Sennheiser earpieces before and I really think they are superb.

yes! i certainly am aware that mixing with headphones is not advisable..im not mixing though..i just thought of making something up..then when sun rises i'll do the mixing...i saw other threads..i think sony? mdr version or sumthing..i aint sure..guys..please help me...im in load of stress..

mildtwist, no stress man. any headphone will be fine. you just have to listen to them and like them.

That's something that alot of people think. It's only partially true. It is possible to mix on the headphones, but you shouldn't mix on headphones ALONE.

In fact it is not good to mix using speakers ALONE either. Here's a link to an article that might help explain more:

http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jan07/articles/mixingheadphones.htm

What I was saying in my first link is that if you are planning on mixing on headphones, you have to select MONITORING headphones, cos any commercial use headphones or DJ headphones will not give you a flat frequency ie not accurate, as they will have either enhance bass or high frequency response to make their sound seemingly bigger.

Of course, if you are just looking to do a rough lay out, like what James said, any headphones will do. Don't have to spend that much, really :)

i need a headphone just to replace my speakers just o have so call privacy and not to make the noise that my mum is talkin bout..lol..i agree with you Thoa..im particular about this also..so i need a reasonable $200 headphone..equivalent to a monitor too :)..u feel me bro?

Yes I feel you. But you said you basically want to make something and leave your mixing through speakers in the day. If that is the case, any headphones will be ok.

If you looking exactly for monitor headphones, the Sennheiser headphones I mentioned might do the trick. There is also the Sennheisers HD 280 Pro, which is actually easier to find then the newer Evolution series.

I know Audio Technica has the Pro series as well, which I HOPE should last more than its lower end counterparts.

There is also Samson. Can't remember the model number. I think it is RH 600. Anyway, they are available at Swee Lee. This cost around 50 bucks, but they are pretty good.

Other brands (though not sure if these are within your budget):

Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro (can find at Delfi)
Bose Quietcomfort 2 (Plaza Singapura)
Ultrasone HFI-650
Yamaha RH5MA
AKG (Can't remember model number. But they're selling at Yamaha)

I am using Audo Technica ATH-T44. It is NOT flat frequency, though, and it is apoilt so I rally don't mix using them.

I USED to mix using a pair of Sennheiser EARphones. I can't recall the model, but THOSE were superb. Unfortunately, I had them when I am still a noob at mixing. Now that I am better (at least I think so), they have discontinued the production of that :(

However, I am planning to purchase the Sennheiser EH350. :)

For a budget around $200, I would recommend the Sennheiser HD25. Nice tight low end and you can use it on anything. The best thing about it, you could easily replace the cable or headphone part if it's spoilt.

Personally, I use Sennheiser HD600 and HD580 with Creek OBH-11SE(headphone amplifier) for headphone mixing.

I have a pair of Sennheiser HD202, but it's an entertainment set. Used to mix on them for some mixing stuff that i did a while back. Not very accurate mix, but if you have a reference mix you can actually compared your mix with it and see if you are over mixing the bass etc ... my headphone set is bass heavy. Doesn't give an accurate reference for my bass frequencies.

I'm looking to get a AKG K141 headphones, if you wanna buy, get them anywhere else but Yamaha. They overprice their stuff so badly you feel like throttling them.

I'm working in an audio company now and i use a HD580 reference headphones, very clear and transparent, it tends to overemphasise the highs but once i got used to it my mixes were very close to what i would hear on the reference monitors.

You check out the AKG ones, i'm not sure how they sound compare to the Sennheisers but AKG are famed for their sound.

I am not sure if the ATH-M40 as mentioned by THOA is the same as the ATH-M40fs i bought a few days ago, but the ATH-M40fs i bought is for sure not less than 50 bucks, unless it's in US$ and excludes shipping fees, but the cheapest ones i found on amazon was still above US$65. I can only say that the listed price at hung brothers in sls was slightly above $150.
Flat response as on its specifications, and it is not as un-rugged as mentioned (of course i hope that u do take care of ur stuffs and not let it drop), but it only comes with 1/4 phono jacks, with impedance of 160ohms, meaning that it's not suitable for ur portable DAPs...

Hope this helps.

Nope. ATH-M40 and the ATH-M40fs are two different AT headset models.

I would HIGHLY recommend the ATH-M40fs.

for what its worth, i own a pair of AKG 141s and they're terrible. freq response is pretty much all over the place, and fairly insensitive (soft as shite). i only use them for tracking occasionally. sean is right on with the HD25 recommendation...

if you can stretch your budget abit go with the beyer dt150s.

if not there's a AKG240 going around on the forums.

Hey...new guy here to soft.com....so bear with me aitez...
Juz my 2 cents worth of opinion...I'm using the Sennheiser eh350 to mix my stuffs. Also A-B with KRK RP5s...the headphones flat enough and good stereo image...well...satisfied feedbacks by peeps about my mixes are always a positive sign that its working for me..
i guess the point is once you reference any of your headphones and speakers to your fav cd/song...take note of how the diff frequencies response...then you'll know wat to do from then on...
GoodLuck!

I agree with THOA. I own the ATH-M40fs headphones as well and they are satisfactory so far for some 100 plus bucks monitor headphones.
