My gig experience @ Gas Haus

well maybe you guys are right... but itz truely a bad experiance for me that no one should deserve to go thurs this :D ... well thanks for the lesson guys.. hey i hold no grudge to anyone or anything ok? maybe i'm juz p*** off becuz things doesnt turn out the way i thought it will be that day... and the crew at gas haus dont really run the show well...
and roy like wad the others said, itz a good idea for you if u will think about changing to a new venue for your next project.. it have been proven by people that have went for the gig on random days that the place are not really a good place to be...

peace out,

hhaha

I guess being in a band doesn't always have outcomes that you thought it would be. My band had problems coping with time constraints and deciding the songs to play.

Just a word of advice, watch your words.

I understand that you have spoken out strongly against Gas Haus, of which, some words are direct. In the event that some of the things you stated are proven otherwise, Gas Haus is in every position deemed to sue you for defamation/slander.

Many people made statements out of anger, but when you are sued, the judge is not going to accept "anger" as a valid reason for your outburst. Change the scene for the better, but not in this manner.

Cheerz,

DD

well, experienced or inexperienced, professional or amateur, all bands should abide by golden rule #1 when playing a such venues : never piss off the sound guy. or rather, socialise and make friends with him, dont sound obnoxious and put across your idea of how you would like the band to sound like. that's your responsibility, and the best that u can do on your part. worst comes to worst share some of your jug with him la! if after that your sound still not very decent, then something is definitely wrong there.

but no matter what, the ultimate blame should not be put on the soundman for inadequate sounding sound(err..) because like all of us, he is human too. maybe he had a bad day, maybe his girlfriend left him for his best friend, maybe his car got stolen the night before and he reached gashaus late and got screwed by the boss. who knows? give him the benefit of the doubt. if you hold gigs there 5 times and 5 times the sound got problem.. then you know there's a problem.. either his attitude in work sucks or his life sucks in general.

i feel that most gigging venues should make bands bring their own stuff down. it'll make them think twice about blasting/abusing/thrashing it, and it'll also motivate the members to upgrade their overall rig, not just guitars/effects/cymbals/pedals. i know that it is a hassle/lehcheh/etc to pack your drums into cases and bring them down in a car/father's car. but if ppl in other countries can do it, why not us? remember from jurong to tampines by car is less than 1 hr, but ppl overseas may need to drive for above 2 hours to get to a gig venue. remember, you feel most comfortable with your own gear and no one else's since you've been practicising on it for ever in your own bedroom.

rockstar treatment, i guess there's not much to be said. do you deserve the treatment? if you did, you probably didn't need to perform there.

just some thoughts after reading through a few pages of comments. coming from someone who is related to neither the organiser nor gashaus, and have never attended a single music mania gig. peace ;)

emg-rocks

just to add a point. I played there for an event and checked out the place before our event. The amps are DI out into the main console also. We checked with the soundman on the setup as I asked if i could bring my own and the guy told me that was the setup and he cant mic up another amp.

I won't comment on the how good or bad gashaus is as a live venue but i feel its a band's responsibility to check out a venue that they will be performing at to minimize unexpected cock-ups.

Gashaus is a walk away from the mrt not a 150 mile drive from your doorstep. Sometimes the only way is to work with what you have. If you don't like what you see then don't agree to play.

*laughs* this is one hellava thread!

i've performed in music mania 2 (october 1st) and i wont say the sound system's that great (only cos i've performed with better systems) but hell yea, i enjoyed myself on stage and i hope those people there enojyed themselves!

anyways i dont really care what you guys think or say. alls im going to do is to turn up on the 19th november, put on my bass with my mates on stage and rock the freakin roof down! and im pretty damn sure the bands performing on that day are behind me!

do it for the music!

enough talk, let's rock!

the soundguy is okayy i guess...... he was a right bastard to me before my set started but after my set he gave me advice on what cables to use cos my cables screwed up after moshers accidentally stepped on it and my pedal.

anywaysss..... think of it this way. if you're sound sucks and there are screw-ups in your gig, it makes your sound underground. and that is cool....

but maybe one of the things gas haus could think about would be to move the couches during some of the gigs. I remeber the metalindustries gig earlier this year in march where the organiser made the effort to move the couches away into a storeroom before the gig. there was a ALOT more people at the front supporting bands compared to the gigs now since people don't want to sit their ass on the hard floor.

as i mentioned in the other thread..

the aussie soundguy there did a relatively good job and was nothing but friendly and accomadating towards us,there was no hassle when it came to setting up our full amp backline that required multiple power strips and alot of trouble, and i was pleasantly surprised that he even bothered to set up a decent foldback monitor mix for us. kudos right there, even though the foldbacks were pretty small and crappy it was appreciated.

ok, i had no idea the soundguy was controlling the amps. but i did realise that i didnt get the sound i wanted and the mics ARE too soft. but its a good opportunity that for bands to play there because they practically have gigs weekly and stuff. i didnt know about the screen thing above the bands, but i thought that really sucked. no one should be watching football while a band is playing. i would still wanna have gigsthere though. i tot tickets was higher than usual gigs outside, i been to IJ studios a couple of times and theirs was like 3-5 bucks per ticket.

hmmm, i dont think its fair to compare the tixs prices at gas haus to other gig venues such as ij studios. obviously the rent for gas haus (central/town district) is much higher than that of ij studios (ulu industrial area).. that itself would justify the higher tix prices in my opinion.

when theres no place to hold gig people complain....
when theres place to hold gig peopel STILL complain

GET REAL people...
right now is much more easy to get show than compare to 5,6 yrs ago....

5:the bass is screwed, u cant even barely feel the bass and if u do it sounded like some guy juz shit his pants on stage
6:the drum is not tune and set in place, and even if the drum is all mic u cant hear a single shit only irritation noise from the broken hihat and itz really irritating
Re: BASS
Hmmm... yeah, my band's (REI) bassist also complains that the amp doesn't work right for him. And he keeps thinking it's his bass guit's fault.

Re: DRUMS
As for drums, well... just before playing, I'll always check the tone for each tom and tune if I have to. Even if the band has to wait, cuz ultimately, it'll be worth the time.

Also, don't know if your drummer experienced this... but the patch of duct tape on the bassdrum wears out especially if you use plastic beaters. For me, by the 4th hit (yes, I use heel-up and kick HARD), the super sticky side of the duct tape gets exposed and my beater gets delayed, sometimes getting stuck for a WHOLE semi-quaver.
My tip is to be prepared with a part of a snare drum's plastic rim and tape it over a the part that will get hit, to ensure non-sticking bass drum action.

And as for not being able to be heard, I've been told many times to tone down my playing volume. o_O

And finally, gashaus is one of those places that will allow any band to play.
So if there's a chance for exposure, we're (REI) not complaining.
And as for crowds, it's up to the bands who are playing that day to bring awareness to friends and friends of friends.
The jrock gigs that Koyuki organized a few times before seemed to have decent turn outs (peaked at about 70+ folks before). Who are willing to shell out SGD$10 or SGD$11 (weekend) a tix.

well, i'll agree with some things this playingplay dude says, but where tix prices and Gas Haus itself are concerned, definitely not. 10 bux for tix is pretty reasonable, when u consider the place. playingplay, have u ever played at IJ? dude, i played with an almost 1/2 hi-hat, hi-hat bottoms for cymbals (2 of em mind you) and a patched up snare. bass drum had a cardboard patched to it......and best of all *drum roll please*.......coffeeshop stool for a drum throne, which had a hole in the middle. so you see, i cant complain about the equipment at Gas Haus, in fact playing so much at IJ, the first time i played at Gas Haus it was quite refreshing. except i couldnt hear the band....and i mean at all. could only hear the drums. lol. but used to playing by memory already, so ya. the soundguy tho, thats quite an issue. i mean yes i feel he's kinda crappy. in fact i've heard from many reputable bands (who shall not be named coz they really are well known in the scene) of their hatred towards the "ang-moh" soundman, and how he does a good job for bands he likes, and a bad job for bands he doesnt like. so i guess i could agree with you there. personally i hate the job he does everytime my band plays there, but hey, u take what u get n just play for the music and the love of it, Rock out with your soul! (totally agree with extremers)

the projector thing....the first time i played there i found it quite amusing coz they were showing F1 and i was alternating between watching the band playing and watching race.....then my band went up and i kept wondering how the race standings went, which totally screwed with my head!! it would be nice if Gas Haus could switch off the projector when bands play. but i guess they have customers there who just wanna have a drink, not specifically there for a gig, which is why they leave the projector on......

you know, i always thought a mixed genre gig was actually a good idea, where all the genres come together for the common goal of having a good time, listening to good music and rockin out. which is why i cant register the idea of a mixed genre gig not being a good idea. i guess its coz i'd like to see the local scene as "genre-less," (i really hate the word genre) where everyone just loves good music and all the music lovers just come together and support each other. like me, i'm a punk at heart, been one for so long i cant remember how long its been, but i love metal too, indie, hardcore, post-hardcore, rock...whatever u name it (genre's have become so confusing man), and good music in general. heck one of my all time favourite bands if Foo Fighters!! love em to bits!! hate the idea of people not listening and appreciating good music, coz of its genre.

don't know, maybe i'm just babbling coz of my frustration with the lack of LOCAL SCENE (non genre conforming) supporters......but thats what's happening now everywhere. people just seem to be following trends like drones.

playingplay, no prejudice whatever-so-ever, but yea, if i have a beef with something Gas Haus related, its just the soundguy, but maybe he has his own restrictions. nothing else. its quite an excellent place to gig in my books. shifting from IJ to Gas Haus was such a relieve, it didnt really matter in the end. if the same soundguy does my band's sound again, heck i'll be happy playing on a real drumset with a real drum throne which keeps my non-existent ass on the throne, not through it. lol!!

where you play, no matter how crappy or sucky it is, just enjoy yourself. its your time on stage, make the best of it, play as hard as possible and make do with what u have. in the end, its how you handle the situation that reflects well on you n your band.

sheesh, think this is my longest post ever. Roy, keep rockin out bro. i'm still waiting to watch Dethmute again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
