Hey, I'm doing a research at the moment and I would like to ask for your views on what are the latest trends in the music industry for teens. Genre of music is fine as well as things other than just music..thanks!

I'm in Temasek Polytechnic and I've got the assignment from one of my cross disciplinary subjects to find out on what teens are going for nowadays in the music industry

Teenagers are the biggest target demographic for most forms of media in popular culture. So naturally, whatever's doing well in popular media will have an influential tide on them. Companies and artists will also try to cater to the teen crowd, which is why you'll find more and more music to be increasingly accessible (read: same kind of crap, trends beating each other into the ground) on the radio these days.

Well yeah, RnB and rap seems to be the fave nowadays..wonder what happened to rock and metal haha.

they are very much alive and flourishing, the music were just made to cater to different crowds and scenes. last i heard, paramore, avenged sevenfold and system of a down <insert radio metal band here) all were doing pretty well.

Heh, yeah my group of friends and I are into metal and rock, but what we see around us everyday, be it school or outside is RnB and other music that ..sounds weird.

IMO. teens nowadays also make it a trend not to buy albums but prefer file sharing or downloading songs as it makes things easier and is free.. This is related to your topic i hope. =D

I would think, you can correlate the trends in Singapore music to 3 places: US top 40s, Taiwan, Malaysia (Western music, chinese pop, and malay/indon pop)

And since you are interested in finding out about teen trends do consider the phenomenon called MTV as well, I believe things are getting very visual nowadays and the 'image' factor as some have mentioned is indeed very important.

But on the general trend, I believe in Singapore the trend tends to follow very closely to trends overseas...

But then again as some have pointed out, this is a very broad topic to do research on, you would do well to narrow your search down to a particular focus: maybe on the sub-trends? Or the impact of MTV on teens' musical choices. These would be simpler and more focused instead of grasping around for general trends.
