MultiFx VS Stompboxes

Could anyone enlighten me on the pros and cons of the two types of effects? I was doing some research on the line 6 pod x3 live and i was wondering if a multifx unit has everything under one roof, why are ppl still using single stompboxes... I've seen comments that multifx units sound digital but its there really a big difference?

multi-fx are usually the more "bang-for-your buck" option. a gajillion effects for 500 bucks. but most of the time (of course there are exceptions), they don't beat the sound nor the simplicity and appeal of having a good old board full of single effects that do exactly what you want, when you want, instead of fiddling with buttons and presets.

digital/analog and tone blabla. those two/three words would come alot of times in differentiating between mfx and single pedals

pros of MFX: there are alot of effects and drives to choose from in one single unit. so when u buy an mfx, basically u can make alot of sounds from it. great for beginners who are still curious to which TYPE of drive/blabla they prefer then can buy single pedals. mfx also has patches where u can store drive and modulation into a single setting, so unlike single pedals, u just have to press once to get a preferred drive, effect and delay etc. this is by far my fav pro about mfx

pro of single pedals? tone. tone. tone. well personally, im not all about tone. not a tone freak(for now, thank god) but sooner or later, i would definitely join some of the others in our quest for tone nirvana.

But since multi effects are modeled after actual stomp boxes, isn't the tone supposed to be similar? I know that lincoln brewster records in the studio through a pod x3. but what about 'live' usage. which kind which give a better sound?

Nowadays with gd modellers the sound can get very close. A lot of the difference is more on feel and the ease of tweaking the effects. On which gives a better sound is really subjective depends on the individual effects u use and how u use it. If the player dosen't know what he's doing, even a set of boutique effects can sound bad. While a gd player can make mediocre equipment sound great.

I'd recommend the line6 m13. It closes the gap a lot on stomp boxes with regard to tweak-ability and ease of use. Sound wise you have to decide for yourself. Do a search on youtube for demos.

no doubt the multi-efx getting, or sounding, rather, more and more "original" like a single pedal. a single pedal is more about tone, and getting exactly wat u wan, when u wan. for multi-efx, u get almost unlimited amount of possibilities to create watever sounds u desire. if you're just beginning, maybe a multi-efx will do just fine, but as u learn more about tone, then u can start to experiment with single pedals.

anyways, stomping too much on pedals while on stage will make u look more like you are dancing with a guitar than actually playing it. :D

lol.. clickin and stepping the pedals like killing ants.
btw about stomp boxes. and prices of mfx?
lol ill go for some multi effects to test out.. even many mfx are sale cheaper then single stompboxes. maybe what ive paid is what ive get.

ZOOM produces some cheap and good multi-efx pedals. bout $250 for ZOOM G2.1U, or something like dat. i cant remember the model. but its one with a expression pedal by the side, so u can control your wah effect.

of course multi-efx can go from 49 for a zoom to 8000 for an eventide so you get what you pay for most of the time.

Pedals usually sound better and more authentic than multi-effects. I used to use a Line 6 FloorPOD but now I use it for its effects and get my distortion from separate analogue pedals. Its preference I guess.

More practical for those who only use drive, so they would get the pedals that they need and not have any extra stuff to go to waste. But the bottom thing is tone, most guitarists generally prefer analogue tone, me included.

I would always reccommend Multi-Fx to newbies,
Because for individual pedals is always a come and
go thing.

Especially for a new player, who hasnt develop
such an ear for tone yet, the journey of buying individual
pedals is going to be a very expensive and fustrating one.

Even with the more experienced players, you'll see them
saying how this "xxx pedal roxors!" and end up selling it
to get a "yyy pedal" a month later. Maybe its just the way
guys blow their money, who knows?

Women got their shoes and handbags!

Thanks guys for the input. Actually i'm not exactly a newbie - i do know my scales and modes. Just posted it here cause the qn sounds noob to me. lol. i have a pedalboard with stompboxes and i love my proco dirty rat to death. but i'm considering swopping everything for just a single multifx unti, like the line 6 pod x3 live. since like some of you say the sound is getting quite close..?

I am currently using a Pod XT Live and now selling it back. Not because it sounds digital/unrealisitc. Actually it has good tones. The problem was I have to spend more time programming/tweaking my Pod XT Live rather than concentrating on playing my guitar. From money saving point of view, multi efx are the way to go, but you have to be prepared to invest enough time and learn as much as you can from your multi efx.

Personally, everything's about individual tastes. When I first start playing the guitar, can hardly find any multi-effect. I'm referring to the 80's. My stompbox are 2 filled pedal cases plus volume pedal and wah pedal which can't fit in it. During that time too, Boss is still the best brand ever in terms of reliability with sound. I have a mixed of Arion, Aria and Boss on my pedal cases. But mobility is always a setback when playing on gigs and performance. At times, I have to leave one case behind as I can't manage to bring it all together plus my guitar. Only brought all when I've got a transport to bring it over.

So, when the era of multi-effects come in to Singapore it gives me great relief. My first multi-effect is Boss too but it doesn't come with a vol or wah pedal. So, still need to bring those things separately. When more and more multi-effects came, I was quite addictive to it and start buying from one brand to another and all my stompboxes are given away or sell off.

But only recently, when I start to buy one stompbox it comes back again and I'm starting to recollect new items and mixed some of my old stompbox together. And now, I'm crazy modifying my guitars over again. Well, I don't sent out as I love meddling with all these stuffs.

So, the actual truth.....human can never get enough. Hehehehe!! Hey....I'm saying about me and I'm sure there are many who are like me too.

Get things that you like for now!! Tomorrow is another ball game as your interest can be another.

Saluti!

Can... Just sit down cross-legged and meditate while playing a classical guitar!

For my case, I can't meditate. ha ha. Because I am playing an $70 Congress classical guitar... So every time I play it, I always think of the ones hanging in Yamaha show rooms, Swee Lee show rooms, etc...
