Most overrated guitarists

Hey all,

This topic has been on my mind for quite awhile now so I thought why not gather fellow softies' opinions. Well I should start the ball rolling.

Herman Li: I think there's enough said about him and dragonforce already.

Slash: Okay people may disagree with me here. IMO he's a great player really and puts in alot of feel into his playing. However, as good as he gets, you can't disregard his image and outer appearance contributed a lot to his publicity. Given just a tad too much credit IMO. Still a great player though, take nothing away from him

Dimebag: RIP. Once again, good player but I think his death may have made him slightly overrated. Don't really like his tone too.

Tom Morello: An average player IMO. However he knows how to play with pedals and switches very well.

Janick Gers: Technically the weakest out of the 3 maiden guitarists IMO.

Underrated: Eric Johnson, Jason Becker, Chris Broderick

i don't think guitar playing should only be judged based on pure technicalities like how many pentatonic shapes can you do in 30 seconds but effects and all do play a part too, and in that regard i think tom morello isn't overrated at all.
 
i would take "overrated" as the amount of HYPE vs. the qualities and abilities of a player.

just because a guitarist is overrated doesn't mean he is bad, and just because he is good doesn't mean that he can't also be overrated.

it's about the amount of acclaim (hence 'rate' in 'overrated') he gets for the amount of skill, creativity and contribution to music.

so with that i agree about slash. and possibly the Edge, but he doesnt get THAT much publicity anyway.

but i'd rather look at things in a positive than a negative way, and talk about underrated guitarists instead
 
Again, this might turn out to be a guitarist flaming thread if people are not too careful. Everyone has their own personal preferences so I'm not gonna judge :) I don't have the right to judge too. I enjoy Eric Johnson's playing as much as I enjoy Slash's, though Slash is one of my favourite guitarists of all time.

Discuss, but don't let this thread become disastrous :S

Yes I have no intention of saying these guitarists suck.
Shinobi's explaination has got it spot on.
I have utmost respect for these people.
Just opinions :D

a queue of yes-men would tell.."Sir..you were GREAT playing the guitar !!! You Rock!!"

slash and dimebag are overrated. i agree. but to me the most overrated guitarist is kurt cobain. i can believe the grunge fans call him a guitar god. number 12 on the rolling stones top 100 guitarist of ALL TIME. u got to be kidding me. okay fine everyone knows that list is screwed up. but anyway, yes he was super influencial, but no where near the status of a guitar god.

have anyone seen prince play? i tell u at least half of u dont even know prince is a guitarist. he's really really really good. he heads the list of underrated guitarist for me.
 
^ i don't think he's getting his publicity for wearing tattoos and being young. =/ also i'm gonna have to go with dimebag. great guitarist, but his death made him some sort of guitar god. also kiefer sutherland and his signature gibson =/

Yeah man he really can play... I saw him play in some music award some years ago. My jaws dropped. I vote him the most underrated guitar player ever!!!!
 
imo Kiko Loureiro from Angra, vry few ppl know him even though he came down here like last year. Great guitar player with a very broad selection of genres ( from power metal ( angra) to great Bossa Nova
