Most overrated guitarists

Why is Synister Gates overrated?

Here is the possible reason:
Avenged Sevenfold is more mainstream than other "metal" bands. Therefore they get more exposure to non-guitar playing listeners. Because A7X has guitar solo's in their songs, it exposes the non-guitar playing listeners to guitar solos. Therefore, because they like the band so much, the fans start to automatically think that Synyster Gates and Zacky are great guitarists.

That 'could' explain why some softies ask us very vague but general questions specifically on A7X like: "How to get A7X sound?" whereas some other dudes might ask us more specific questions about one element of guitar playing. Like: "How do I do pinch Harmonics like Zakk Wylde?/sweep like Malmsteen?/sing and play like Hetfield?"

Synyster Gates reminds me of someone in the 80s: C.C Deville.

No joke. Not that he's not a good guitarist. CC Deville was damn good. So good, that everyone claimed he had no soul or that he plays too many notes or whatever. He made it huge in Poison, and was 100% commercial pop glam rock. But as a guitarist, he suited Poison very well, and technically, wasn't as bad as people claimed. In fact, he was/is quite good.

But because he was so caught up in the pop world, no one took him seriously. What a shame.

I liked CC Deville

Over-rated none i can think of plus the fact half the guitarists in the world have already been mentioned.. under-rated..Kris Norris from Darkest Hour!

C.C Deville in my opinion was one of the most under rated guitarist ever. And then there is Rick Nielsen, does anyone remember him at all?

But if i have to name one over rated guitarist, it will be Hetfield or Richie Sambora for me.

And yes, Prince really rocks....

And oh yeah, how can anyone forget those old school pantera stuff...It was all DIME.

Oh, my turn to go hide now.

I kinda agree with Whitestrat about Kirk Hammett being overrated. He is a great player, but there're equally good or even better players (in my opinion) like Rusty Cooley who only a small proportion of people know. I didn't know about Rusty until I was introduced to his playing some time back. That's how underrated he is... C.C. Deville, a great player to my eyes, and great onstage charisma. He's a joy to watch. He's more technically skilled than Slash in my opinion, but he isn't too famous, so yeah I agree that he's underrated.

*Personal opinions here. Don't do anything stupid.

looks like the majority of you guys here are rating them mainly based on technical skills alone and forgetting everything else about what makes a guitarist great.I agree there are may unknown technically proficient guitarists out there but that doesn't mean that those few less than proficient guitarists who are currently famous should thus be automatically deemed as being over-rated.

omg.

This is the dumbest most pointless thread ever

guitar is guitar

and

music is music

not a competition.

PEACE, LOVE AND MUSIC.
FOR MUSIC'S SAKE

No worries.. I don't judge by technical skills. There're some technically awesome guitarists who just don't come across to me as great. Like Herman Li. For me, if they bring new things to the table, and are able to play consistently, and ultimately a joy to watch and listen, do I term them as great.
