Modded Epiphone Valve Junior Head

The previous modder, Seekz, did the Trinity mod and added a Hammond OT to replace the stock one and voiced it to sound like a Fender. That mod was done months ago, I think sumwhere in June. While it was very nice and clean sounding, I wanted more versatility in tones, like having control over eq etc, as I started having more guitars.

Recently, I approached Goose (thanks to Ized) and told him what I wanted, he drew a diagram and told me about what the mods he was about to do. He was very detailed in explanation, even though I had a hard time trying to understand electronics stuff haha..anyway, he took a week to do the necessary mods.

Me and Ized went to his place to collect my modded head and when tested thru Goose's cab, sounded great on the cleans and overdriven sounds. When tested with my Epi cab, my Strat does sound lovely and glassy, even though it not exactly 100% Fender sound. Sounds really sweet on the neck/mid position :)

I will now explain the mods he did.See the 3 switches, from top to bottom? 1st one acts as a high/low input thingy, like u see on amps which has 2 inputs for high and low. 2nd is a brightness switch. Left and right side have different bright values, while middle is stock. 3rd is a additional gain switch, low or high. The stock volume knob has now become a overall gain knob. Next, is the tone knob, which is useful, to get dark or bright tones, if u have multiple guitars to play thru and lastly, the last knob acts as some sort of power soak device, which enables me to crank the gain knob to the max and still not disturb the neighbours. Goose calls it the VVR (Variable Voltage Regulator). I put in Sovtex 12AX7 in the pre amp stage and Ei EL84 at the power stage.

I changed my stock speaker in my Epi cab to Eminence Red Fang (thanks to Seekz for the replacement of speaker) and it definitely made a difference in tones, even though it sounds a little dull at first, after a few days of speaker break in, the sound brightened up. Now my Strat sounds awesome and glassy on cleans..n a nice bluesy overdrive by switching to "high gain" mode and turning the gain knob (which used to be the volume knob) and adjusting the VVR knob. I like the way the amp reacts to the way I play. When I play soft, it sounds clean and when I play hard, WHAM! Haha..I mentioned to Goose about wanting to put a reverb tank in the head, even though he said it is possible, it would be costly. So I`ll be getting a reverb pedal soon.

Ok, I think I`ve given a decent review on it and hope that everyone will find it useful. Huge thanks to Seekz and Goose for the mods :)

Thanks sub for the advice u given me during the past months or so on choosing this amp, hopefully this one will be with me for a long time as there are still many tones to be tweaked from this amp, hahaha :)

i think you've turned a one-trick pony into something quite dynamic. if there are others here who wish to tread the same path as you do, hope you can share.

You got me motivated.. Now I'm considering this again.. I already love the stock sound.. Care to PM me the cost of the mod?

This amp is really killer....it even owns certain 100w amps many times its size...after the mods. I shall not name a certain marshall amp used in a studio in bugis but i bet this "goosed" Epi VJ head will definitely pwn it big time.

i really hate that amp dude...it has terrible cleans and its preamp is just so damn noisy! had to tweak it a quite bit but the seventheaven still sounded good on it....but in Goose's house that day thru the modded VJ....everything just pwned!
