Modded Ds1 Recommendations

Get an amp. Preferably the one they use.
The modded DS1 alone isn't going to get you near their tone.
Unless its abt that legendary thing where its said Joe recorded some famous track with a "mere" ds1 into a Roland JC or something. Joe has mentioned it before - he uses an MIJ DS1 and with mods that he wouldn't speak of.

I get my Vai/Satch sound from an OD into Fuzz.. Never dreamt of using a DS-1 for that sound, not even a Japanese DS-1..

Hmmmm if i am not wrong Steve Vai uses a Keeley modded DS1 Ultra mod.......u can try that. But price is often an issue to some, great if u can find a used one cheap......if not there are some local modders that make great mods to the DS1 as well for much cheaper!
But like what shredcow said, it is not just abt the DS1 that will give u their tone......the guitar u use, the PUs in the guitar, and the amp all makes the difference....so the DS1 is just a part of the tone no doubt a pretty important one.

hmmmm...to get a similar tone...
Try this with the current DS1.
Run your amp with moderate drive. (What amp do you have btw? Do you have other drive pedals?)
DS1 set to: gain 0, volume MAX, tone to taste (should be around 10 o'clock to 11.30?)
Adjust amp gain (ds1 is on) to taste.
Try that out, lemme know it turns out.
