MIDI Aftertouch .. What and How?

Hi,
Notice there are alot of seasoned veterans aroudn here, so i shall ask a question that has always been on my mind, but never been asked... mainly coz i dont' own a board with it...

What is MIDI Aftertouch and how is it applied usually?
I mean, what i'd think is its key off, but that's key off ..

Aftertouch is the midi signal sent after pressing down the keys. When you press a key, a note plays. While holding that key and pressing it further down, it will trigger the aftertouch. They are usually programmed as vibrato, portamento, triggering of another sound/sample or other effects.
