thanks.

firstly, i am not starting an argument. secondly, its no use asking questions when you dont do your own homework, thirdly i bet you dont even understand half the terms used here.
i told you, the best thing to kickstart your metal journey is via google and youtube. i learnt the basics from there and even sweeping. a video guide is good help.

how about bending?? can u do it properly now? i would love to see it. Remember the way i taught u ? using the forearm strength not using the fingers to push the string up?

sure thing, one day bro.
practiced really hard on bends after you rectified my playing. and of course with help from youtube too

what are you trying to say? im doing everything i can. don look down on people jus cos u have experience.

I watch alot of lessons in youtube, comparison of pickups, read about mostly everything about metal on ultimate guitar, googled for infos about guitar bodies etc etc. And whenever i don understand it, i googled it.

No offence but i don need advice from you " google and youtube is ur bestfriend" DUHHH everyone knows that dude, i just wan more information from experienced people so in a way im guided.

So don look down on people, and if you are not willing to help than dont, don come in here and jus give useless answers and act like you are john petrucci or stg. FFS man!

There are alot of better guitarist out there.

Try to go for brand new ones. The condition of second hand pups are subjected to how the previous owner has taken care of it. Be sure that if you actually install them unto your guitar, test them out and make sure there are no problems at all, stuff like grounding not complete, static....overall make sure they are working perfectly. Still, my best advise is to save up and go for brand new SDs or EMGs. They're worth the wait and worth the money.

A very very simple metal song by Trivium is Rain from the album Ascendancy and it consists of fast galloping and heavy riffing. The song is quite rhythm based with a fairly easy solo at the end. This one will get your metal rhythm in coordination and personally it gets the blood flowing even before I gig.

Cheers ;)

Thanks man great help.

I'll try to play along to rain maybe after 2 weeks. :) im working very hard now, at least 3 hours on guitar everyday!

Which do you think i should get first? An amp or new pickups? Because im using PodFarm now and it is connected to my comp so i can use my computer system to generate the tone.

Im thinking of pups first as its cheaper then i'll save up for a mesa in the near future when i get better :)

My advice start off with the more difficult shit first as you'll find most metal song solos consist of scales, tapping, bending & alternate picking. Focus on these skills first and life will be much easier once you study the theory.

get an amp first.

Thats what im thinking about too cos without all that skill having the best pickup don mean shit. :)

But for now im gonna go with a shitty amp prolly cos still i wanna get a really good amp when i get better!

Im thinking of a 15w Line 6 Spider 4. as i saw reviews on it in youtube saying its great for metal and has this "insane" feature.

What do your reckon? Second choice tho is a marshall 15Cdr with the fdd button.

but def my budget is lower than 200SGD for a 15watt.

if you are going to use a shitty amp now, the drive channel might be shitty... i heard that line6 spider amps are very digital. i duno about that. but it's more practical to get a mid range amp like vox valvetronix or the roland cube etc. it will definitely last you longer. or get an amp with a good clean channel and get another high gain pedal.

How much do you think mid range 15 watts would cost? Can you name me a few with cd ins? Cheers mate!

honestly speaking, i am not familiar with amps. but i am using a laney lx35r, which is 30 watts i think. it has cd in and it costs me around 100+.. sweelee has it. :X i think the drive is quite decent (better than some SX or smarvo tiny amps) .... well it's my opinion... and the drive channel can do high gain stuff with a switch call XTS or something.. it scoops your sound... you can go try. lol.

I have 20 years of playing experience, and have owned almost 20 guitars in total. I play everything from Prog Metal to Cheesy Pop. Can I say something?

Get a teacher.

Seriously. I wish I had done so when I first started out. There are many bad habits I've developed over the years that's stopping me from moving on in certain directions. I've tried correcting those problems, but those habits always come back. They was I hold my pick, the lack of attack I sometimes get, and even uncoordinated pickings. It's good if you can find good and reliable guidance from teacher who can help you along the way. I was 100% self taught, and though I can play today (not too shabbily, if I might add), I know I could have done much more had I known what to practice, and how to practice.

That's another thing. Practice is key. You haven't nailed the Minor scale... Not by a long shot. Getting the pattern right is only the beginning. Knowing how to apply it is another. Being able to improvise by ear and applying the right scales to get the right tone of voice in that passage is something that I've discovered, isn't 2nd nature to most guitarists.

For example, if I throw you a set of chords, you need to be able to make up a MELODY on the spot. (meaning, no time for composition. Just wing it) And it needs to be a good melody. The way to judge if it's good or not isn't from you. If your audience rocks out to your melody, you win. If they don't get you, you lose. It's that simple.

Yes it's one of the hardest things to do.

Even basics like palm muting and fingerings are easy to get wrong, and frustrations can occur if you're not taught right.

I'm sorry, but that is complete and utter bullshit. That's how mistakes are made, and bad habits are developed.

Furthermore, Music Theory and Guitar Technique are mutually exclusive. the advancement of one does not necessarily depend on the other. Knowing a scale is NOT theory. Knowing how to apply that scale within a grouped set of chords is. Appregios are just patterns. What you're playing within that pattern is where theory comes in.

Do you buy a guitar every year or something?
Rich =.=

Anyway, to the TS, start with more basic stuff first, and start with basic equipment. It's no use getting something big and good looking and expensive... and finding out that you don't like it later.

I've only been playing for a year now, but seriously, look at videos and stuff when you learn techniques. When I just started, I played power chords with my first 3 fingers, though I was corrected before it became too much of a habit.

And you don't absolutely have to start with metal songs to learn metal by the way. I started with green day :P Their songs are purely (or nearly purely) power chords, so that really helped me as I moved on to the harder songs lol

whitestrat is right. i started off guitar with my dad's acoutic, playing metallica, master of puppets on it. I asked for guitar lessons, dad didnt let me cause he thinks im like 'three minuted hot spot' (literally tranlated from chinese). NOR did i do anything to get myself a teacher. i was 13 back then. So i just nailed songs by listening to it over and over, i didnt know how to read tabs until a year later, but by then i dont need tabs to learn songs, as i could just listen and figure it out in a jiffy, its much more accurate to me too. (I use tabs to put my ideas on soft copy)
Now, i could shred and sweep and all, but i have no theory. The songs that i compose, all the solos and whatever, are basically ear trained(?), meaning like if it sounds right and nice to me, i'd just put them in.
It MAY sound good, but then in the long run, you'll find out there's no PHRASING and PROGRESSION (i hope u know what im talking about), its just basically subbing in stuff that goes with whatever key ur playing in. AND, the lack of theory = NO IMMEDIATE IMPROVISATION. Its like, someone wants to jam with you, and he tells you
'hey dude lets jam, ima go from E to G, G to F, F to A and bablabla'
And you won't know what the shit he's trying to say.
Oh and i've also found out that, THERE ISNT A PROPER 'guitar theory 101' guide anywhere, teaching you WHERE in theory you have to start and how you progress. Youtube vids always go something like, on the E string on the Gnote, you play blablabla, and you won't know wtfbbq is he/she trying to say too.

SO, my conclusion is
-GET A GUITAR TEACHER
-GET AN AMP(30 watt is more than enuough)
-LOOK OUT FOR INSTRUCTIONAL VIDS BY PROFESSIONALS (Try Malmsteen/Paul Gilbert)
-GET YOUR PASSION
-START PRACTICING.

Oh and btw, i Play LOG too. =D
Lamb Of God, Children Of Bodom, Bullet For My Valentine and All That Remains.
