Melodic Death Metal

Truth is, I used to be such a dickhead trying to prove that i know metal alot a few years back in this forum, and well, got bashed. So brushed up and listen to what 'real' metal is. But i did also learn that, it's no use comparing what you know, cos ultimately, there's someone out there who knows more than what you do.
So safest way, keep your mouth shut and recommend. :)

this is nothing in local forums.. what if you have been in outside forum where you faced the whole world.. i've been in FMP(Full Moon Productions) and VF(Vampire Freaks).. FMP is a total black/death metal forum.. where VF have cults that are alot of genres.. i have been bombarded alot of times till i was banned several times.. but that doesnt make me a loser or make me quiet or being stupid enough.. well,i was bombarded and bombarded others but at last all being friends.. we even called everyone gay or fags.. but we just laughed about it.. well, all stated and done.. cheers to you,bro.. enjoy the music..

Slaughter of the Soul by At the Gates is arguably my favourite album by any band.
And after reading how some of you guys speak of Dark Tranquility so highly and in the same breath as ATG, I went out yesterday to purchase Character by Dark Tranquility.

And boy, was I disappointed. I guess I was expecting too much. No offence intended. Perhaps I just didn't take to what they are doing, and to their style.

Maybe I was expecting something more ATG-esque, or something along the lines of Slaughter of the Soul but better.

I think I'd take another listen before passing the final judgement, but this is my first impression of the album.

Anyway, it's really cool to see how ATG has picked up. They are huge now, and so prolific. Such a drastic difference to the days in 95' when they recorded Slaughter of the Soul and then their demise.

Anyway, it's good that they're agreeing to come together again to hopefully record another album. Even not, it's just as good to see them re-appearing on Bloodstock, Wacken, etc.

Slaughter of the Soul seems to be their pinnacle though, and I don't think any band'd ever be able to re-create something as good. Even Anders crumbled under the pressure of having to come up with riffs to match those in Slaughter of the Soul. According to their interview in Decibel, having and trying to create another masterpiece to surpass or simply to match Slaughter of the Soul was one of the factors in their decision to separate ways. Of course, I'm not discounting other various factors.

But Nocturnal by Black Dahlia Murder seems to have Slaughter of the Soul as it's main influence. In fact, it's very very similar. Worth checking out.

Behemoth is Blackened Death Metal...

I think :/

Just saying :/ for educational purposes.. cause that time I talking to the basement metal shop dude about black/death metal (at that time I just got into obscure metal, so I couldn't tell the difference, so I referenced a few bands, which included behemoth, then he told me, they're blackened death, quite shocked ah, didnt know can combine xD)

He's right. In a world of music of all genres, it's all about recommendations and not about testing one another's knowledge.
Cheers to all!

Keep it metal.

no test ah! >.<
didn't flame anyone for calling this genre that or whatever.
im not that anal :/

so the intention wasn't to test other people's knowledge, but to discuss and share knowledge :)

I call them the saviours of melodic death metal.

As we watch a new breed of young metal musicians continuing the legacy left by their influences, this band will most likely take the world by storm with their guitar-driven melodies. And maybe to the girls, these guys are cute.

Tracedawn from Finland rose to the occasion when Melodic Death Metal seems to be going the wrong way... The new saviours of the melodic death metal scene? Probably. The band is still young and have already released an outstanding album, "Tracedawn".

Antti Lappalainen - Vocals ( 19 )
Tuomas Yli-Jaskari - Guitar ( 18 )
Jeremy Qvick - Guitar ( 20 )
Perttu Kurttila - Drums ( 18 )
Vili Itäpelto - Keyboards ( 18 )
Henkka
*age in brackets

I'm looking forward to hear more from this band, and hopefully, own a copy of their album. A new band that has so much to offer. Tracedawn were able to gladly surprise me from the first moment with the introductory track Without Walls.

hey bro intro more of such bands yea great job haha. wouldnt have known abt them otherwise.

I take that as a compliment huh?
check out the thread i created about RECOMMENDING METAL BANDS. Hope to make it a permanent topic here in this forum.
Recommendation is something I enjoy to make people smile.

Insomnium is by far one of the most underrated band of this genre that i overlooked as well...

Blood Stain Child may appeal to bengs and lians... Thanks to their uniqueness in using techno elements with melodic death metal.
This band hails from the land of th Rising Sun, Japan.

I've been listening to alot of Dark Tranquillity, and beginning to be more open to their earlier releases. Fiction was a great album, and probably on of the best in the MDM industry.

Any thoughts on Amon Amarth's "Twilight of the God"? -
"Tattered Banners and Bloody Flags", in my opinion was the best track in the album...

have any of you guys heard light this city?
an awesome band with a great female vocalists from san francisco...unfortunately,they broke up this year.
their new/final album 'stormchaser' just came out...
the track 'firehaven' features chuck billy of testament on vocals

check them out:

The first time i heard Light This City, it left me an impression that this is just yet another 'Arch Enemy wannabe'.
Hopefully, i'll be able brace myself for yet another melodic death assault this time... I'll give this band one last chance to prove me wrong.

twilight and tattered banners both my fav from the album

Only recently, i chose to explore and open my ears to the much old school melodic death metal in the 90s or earlier.
I came across bands that could be considered Pioneers of Melodic Death Metal alongside DT, In Flames (disgraceful) and At The Gates.... Maybe even way before those 3 bands.

And one of a few number of old school melodic death metal bands that has been overlooked until today is Eucharist from Sweden (disbanded in 1998 ).
Eucharist started out in 1989, but only release just demo 2 years later in 1991.
I would rate this band as a pioneering band alongside ATG.

There's no denying that In Flames is one of the pioneers of this movement, but i would gladly dethrone them. And replace them with Eucharist who rightly deserve it.

The 2nd band is Unanimated, also from Sweden.
Unanimated came together in 1988, but like Eucharist, it took them 2 years to begin with a Demo in 1990. And i highly recommend this band if you've not heard. They disbanded in 1996, and good news! The returned together in 2007...

Meanwhile, Eucharist songs are all available for free download at their official site. It's is legal.

I agree!

Now, I don't agree. I think Fiction sounds too much like Character and it was Character that revived DT. Check out The Gallery too. Old, classsic and... KICK-ASS.

Any Kalmah fans here? I fell in love with them instantly after listening to They Will Return. Hollow Heart is such a killer!

sorry OT abit. InfernoxDeath you on the mindef forums? haha. the "dethroning" in flames phrase looks very familiar.

</Ot>

Bingo..
But this is serious... Look at how crappy In Flames turned out to be?
If their vocalist, who's formerly from Ceremonial Oath could do what he did before in that band, then chances of them ending up like that would be low... -_-

I've got the whole discography for DT... Loving every minute of it.
Kalmah... the rightful owner of where C.O.B used to sit... A the top of Finland's best MDM band...
I can't believe why people choose to listen to C.O.B (no offence), when Kalmah's way consistent...
Norther is declining too..

Anyway, here's a few bands worth checking out if you have not.

Made of Hate (formerly known as Archeon) from Poland
Red Descening - Australia

Good stuff, and very potential...
