Gain covers up sloppy picking and mistakes. Reduce it and you'll be facing with a whole lot of problems a boatload of gain wouldn't bring.

yea, just try recording with clean
but then again, gain does come with its attendant difficulties too. Keeping your playing squeaky-clean when the gain is very high is a real challenge, at least for me. I've always had a habit of practicing clean, hence my muting is sub-par.

well, you've just shown yourself for the b*tch that you are.
I've never seen an easier confession.

I don't know about you shredcow, but from my point of view, it was very how to say...unprofessional to just comment like that...regardless of whateva man....

1st: you're actually in no position to just assume that his tone is non-existant, becuz it's sounds to me that you actually despise him or somethin', which is why i thought maybe you should apologise, becuz i seriously don't think he deserves to be despised for a post like that. *shrugz*

2nd: it was too harsh, maybe silk was only playin' around...was it his avatar?

3rd: I'm tryin' hard to think of a 3rd reason...maybe when i eventually think of it, i'll let you know... :D

So there.

btw, you wouldn't really wanna know what i've been talkin' about your posts...and what OTHERS have been talkin' about your stuff in OM :D

No no eadricng, I'm not despising him. Take it as I'm telling him off for giving silly comments.

*sigh*
You see, thats the problem here when it comes to OMs. Ppl post their OM hoping for critial remarks so they can improve, frankly, its just a super safe kind of commenting out there that does NOTHING to tell the player how to improve.

Ppl like Thor, give thoughtful, helpful criticism and its great! And I appreciate that... I go to him and talk to him about how I can improve then, ask for any more comments/thoughts on my playing.

I'm not asking for you to come and insult my playing but if you think it is truely horrid, then please go ahead and say so but be prepared to tell me why, because I will humbly come to you for answers.

I never denied that vaiyen, you can think of me in any fashion you want to.

shredcow, why did you have to say he has non-existant tone anyway? It IS insulting. If you think about it lah.

eadricng, have you tried turning a JH all knobs max? Thats non existant tone. ;) Its un-usable.

Anyway, if Silk finds what I said insulting and intensely offending, please say so...

This is a scary thought that many people here think it isnt a bad thing to get bad tone and crank everything to full on a pedal.

or give silly comments

Hm. Well I'm just wondering...

If you can't turn everything to max, then what's the point of having it there in the first place?

If it cannot be used, then why do they give you that option to do so?

Anyway, the topic of tone is ambiguous. I feel that it will go off topic if it remains in discussion here, so I will bring that discussion elsewhere.

Silk, you can turn the knobs on a pedal to max but in the case of the JH, when you do that, you get noise, lots of noise, and the mid/mid contour knobs will turn the tone into something totally wack and there's nothing useful in that tone.

Some knobs can be maxed sure but there are certain receipies so to speak. Blowing everything on 10 is like dumping pepper and salt and suger into your food. Some ppl like lots of bass, fine max your bass, throw some salt. Some like treble so do so. A good combination will yeild your golden tone...

But on the other hand...we have to take into consideration certain things like... well, for example when playing clean in a band, you don't need lots of bass. You can take your bass down to 9 oclock so your bassist will have more room. On your own at home, that setting might sound like crap but in a live setting, it makes the difference.

Note this too, there are the finer points of adjusting eq. Need more treble? Don't jump to increase your treble, try lowering your bass.

Well, no one said it cannot be used... but many things need to be used wisely and not thrown it on full.

An example would be the Boss CS-3 compressor. Some ppl like to throw the sustain on to wayyyy past 12 oclock... like that? Go ahead. Then they complain abt noise.

For OD/DIST pedals, its best to set the volume same as the clean. When u max the vol on the pedal, it just produces alot more noise n hiss. If u want a louder signal, then up the vol on the amp.

U can use max vol on the pedal with little gain as a boost, but its not meant to be on all the time... Noisy

I mean if its a dist pedal there will definitely be some noise... Some pedals can even pick up radio.. haha no kidding

Have you tried it?

Their settings? anyways, go explore will ya?

The suggested settings are a starting point.
