Hi,

i Played Metal, and shred
and want to purchase a low watt Tube amp for bedroom level playing n recording,
hopefully in the long run, i don have to amp hopping( as i intend to use it till i purchase a full flege Marshall or Mesa)
what are the recommendation for me?

many thanks

blackstar ht5 or vox night train. the blackstar is not nearly powerful enough for thrash or all out blitzkrieg unless u're using blackouts in ur guitars though haha. so just stack it with a drive pedal and ure good to go.

the vox ac4tv is also something worth trying, but of course, please bring along ur pedal board to see if it can take ur kinda music. i've heard its good for pedal mongers but not sure it'll take metal. just try and see how lor haha

Hi,
the blackout( seymour duncan you mean)
ya i am using 2 x EMG for my telecaster ( think Jim root),
go straight into amp, or sometimes, will hook up a MXR 90 or digitech whammy.

anyone has experiences with Haze 15 of marshall?

so a normal humbucker wont be able to have much gain on the amp?
im trying to get a brown tone with sustain thats all...
will a seymour duncan jb do the job?

if you set both the pregain and postgain on the blackstar to 10, the distortion is quite intense, but it'll be a lil too loud for room practise i reckon! haha

from my experience, the heavy thick distortions that i've heard in the metal that i listen to are all moderately high gain, but quad tracked guitars, that's why they're so intense and thick. stacking lots of gain just kill the dynamics, if you don't have the oomph, it's just one wall of jjeeeng. not very heavy indeed, quite pain for the ears!

i always had this thought that the "more gain the heavier it sounds" was a misconception. and it was agreed by john petrucci on one of the interviews he did not too long ago, so at least i know i'm not the weird one!

honestly, HT 5 or 20 is in my check list for a long long time.
but i see quite afew who dump it off in the buy/sell.
why did ppl dump it?
cos of gain, tone or ?

what other people do- is it a SURE indicator that the product per se is undesirable?

if it's gonna be a small practice unit, IMO any brand name will do, just ensure the amp itself is adequately reinforced by pedals to futher define your tone.

did i spell that the product is undesirable?
what i am seeking is their IMPARTIAL opinion on this product.
Blackstar had done good marketing, otherwise this product wont be selling like hot cakes i am sure.

In YOUR OPINION, all small practise unit "taste" the same? like to eleborate?

no my friend, you didn't spell anything negative of the product but you mentioned 'dump'- people might just be selling it off with no emotions attached but seeing 'dump' there, it's painting a picture of regretful disassociation.

when it comes to small tube combos (8" drivers or smaller), especially those sporting a single channel, they give a similar fundamental clean tone to work with, which is desirable to say the least. it's only when the amp involves a higher wattage & bigger drivers, some tonal discriminations take place in light of tube brand names/ types + driver brand names. it's also different if the amp comes in a head format where one can plug it into other cabs with different combo options (1 x 15/ 2 x 12/ 4 x12... etc). it's MY OPINION anyway right? maybe it doesn't really matter. just sharing...

I've tried the Blackstar HT-1 and its quite a small amp, tube, and definitely worth considering. More suited for rock, but I've not seen how it'll do shred metal. Think you'll still need to put a pedal in front of it to get that high shred tone

Yes the HT-5 is good but doesn't have enough gain for some people when max.
Just buy a simple overdrive pedal and drive he amp. That'll do the job very nicely

in that case just buy a small cheapo solid state amp and put a drive pedal in front, what for buy a tube amp when the tube amp in question per se isn't gonna provide enough gain.

lol, like that might as well say just get a pod HD500, you can dual amp mesa rect and uberschall on full blast into FRFR system without busting your ears, and if that's not enough, you can stack 8 consecutive drive pedals infront of both amps too. one wall of diztortion, hopefully the noise gate works.

I haven't tried the HT5 before, so I can't really give a judgement. It so happen that I walked into Woodworkz to pick up some stuff the other day and Ram was trying to sell the HT-1 to someone. Gave it a try when the customer left - the gain at full blast probably can't compare with your usual Marshalls, but hey. It's a practice amp, good enough for those who are going to plonk the amp at home and practice :D
