Looking to buy a fender tube amp

Dear all,

I've been thinking about getting a nice fender small full tube amp for me to play my strat in my room for quite some time..... Since my parents will be travelling to japan and me myself will be travelling to HK in May..... i need some input from you guys.....

1st of all,

Which fender tube amp is better? I am considering a blues junior or a pro junior..... Am i missing out for just choosing fender? Any other brands is welcome, just recommend them. Btw, i dun play with a lot of distortion or heavy metal. I play tunes like blues or pink floyd kind of music........ so prefer something that bluesy..... And although i have metal zone boss pedal but i dun use it at all.....

2nd of all,

Where is the best place to buy them? Singapore (Swee Lee) out of stock most of the time?, HK (Tom Lee - where i will be going) or Japan( where my parents is going)?

Any similar experience from your guys, hope you dun mind sharing........

Any reviews on the amp or any other amp are also welcome. My budget is abt $700. A tube amp for bedroom playing so i guess 15-20 watts will be sufficient.

Thanks a lot and have a nice day,
CT.

most probrably you wont be able to find a blues jr in swee lee.

pro jr can find though, its about 200 dollars cheaper than the blues jr and although it has no equaliser and reverb, etc (i think), i hear that some people in soft prefer it to the blues jr

one alternative that you can find in singapore is a laney VC or LC 15 watt amp.

I, for one prefer the pro jr. It has amazing cleans, and take pedals really well. You could go down to any shop that sells, and test them out 1st yeah? Only thing about the pro jr is that it only has a volume, and a tone control, so most tone tweaking may come from pedals.

i wouldn't buy a brand-new tube amp in singapore if i were you, you'll probably rely on it for your sound and it's a little impractical to be carrying your amp around to gigs and to jam. that said though, my favorite is the old fender musicmaster bass amp. simplest control panel ever (2 knobs), best cleans i've ever heard, and it loves pedals. i got one for 400+ including shipping off ebay.

Hey guys, thanks for your prompt replies..... really appreciate it....

Actually i dun really use pedals. To me, i just try to keep it simple, my strat + a tube amp to play blues.....

fender amps good enough for this purpose?

Blues junior seem to be impossible to get in singapore be it new or used, I dun mind getting a used one, as long as the tubes are still working.... :)

As at now, i am using a pevey rage 158, (made in usa). Couldn;t really get the kind of bluesy sound that i am looking for....... and i dun even use my metal zone pedal anymore.

give me the details of the amp, like pics, condition & price... i will get back to u.... you can om me. meantime, i do some research in case you r really selling... thanks leecs

Just been re-tubed by Randolf. everythings fine except the LED light not working. its an easy fix but im lazy. its a 2x12. looking around maybe $1000. can nego though. welcome to try

Bro I suggest don't waste your time with a blues jr or a pro jr, you'll get really sick of them after a while. True while some might say it's "Authentic Fender Tube Tone", the size of the amp and the projection just makes it "one dimensional" in tone. The Jr series is just now responsive enough for my tastes, forget about tube "Bloom" because you're not going to find it here.

If your budget is $700, save a couple of hundred more and buy a Deluxe Reverb, you will be much happier, trust me! That amp IMHO is probably the best low wattage tube amp Fender is offering right now. Amazing cleans, much better than the Jr series for sure! And it takes pedals extremely well. Reverb channel and a tremolo feature too.

I recently sold mine away and I miss it like crazy right now.

The only reason why I sold it?

Something else is coming up and I needed to liquidate some stuff to afford that something else.

yes. I sold my pro jr. because i found it very.... no fender-ish. I sold it after trying out a deluxe reverb. or DRRI.

Also, the HRD is a good amp. Pretty versatile and takes pedals fairly well. heh.

HRD is also damn good, but most softies are concerned due to the speaker configuration.

IMHO Speaker configuration is not an indication of volume...you play 20watts through 1x12 or 20watts through 2x12, it's still 20watts it only sounds bigger because 2 speakers move more air so to speak.

Hi all,

sorry to ask this,

what is HRD? Deluxe reverb? DRRI?

leecs is selling a Hot Rod Deville, is it a HRD? Btw, how does the Hot Rod Deville performs? Leecs, hope you dun mind us talking abt the model of the same amp you have....... Just for reference...... :)

And guys, I'm actually not a very technical person, as in i dun really remember model numbers or technical specification like reissue, deluxe version, limited edition.... all these i see already, my head spins...... hope u guys dun mind......

And hmmm..... seems like blues junior is not as ideal as i thought afterall but wouldn;t an amp like 60 watts be too loud? i stay in a hdb, and the amp will be in my room..... how loud can i go in my room?

you guys have the same setting like mine?

A Hot rod deville has 2 versions. 2x12 & 4x10, which KennethC has. 4x10 should be 60w ba..I also stay in a 5 rm hdb flat, so what do you think when i crank up this amp? I don give a ****!!! there a people here with 100w amp & 1/2 stack in their hdb flat too.

back to the amp. IMO it take pedals well if you intend to use with. It has 2 ch. Clean & OD. But the real mojo comes from the OD channel. Very nice lows & highs. yoo probably don need to dial the bass above 12pm. Nice spring reverb.

I would normally patch 3 drive pedals in this. gtr-sd1-bd2-ds1-amp. The right balance of EQ between amp & pedals enables me to play a number of genres like blues, jazz, rock. If i want abit heavier stuffs, i'll take out the bd2 & throw in a mt2.

write so much no use. must try then understand

HRD = Hot Rod Deluxe
DRRI = Deluxe Reverb Reissue

Not to sound offensive, but it would be a good idea to get a little technical. Read up online on other forums and reviews to really get a feel of how other find their amps. Youtube is a good resource. The more educated you are, the better and well informed you will be in making your purchase decision.

actually a pro jr is pretty fenderish. its just that it goes for a tweedish sound rather than a BF tone.
admittedly, it goes for a "forceful" tweed tone with a hair of vintage marshall. but the tone is still pretty nice. the best thing abt it is that it really is gig-worthy in small bars. its light and has a sound that sits well in the mix. if it seems pretty boxy, just throw a outboard reverb to open it up a bit or run it thru a 1x12, 2x12 cab.

for home practise, i recommend the champion 600. its small enough to drive it a bit and your neighbours wont complain.
