Looking for a new bass guitar $1k-2k range

Hi I'm feeling a bit of GAS for a new bass guitar... besides Yammies I haven't really tried any other brands.. anyone got good suggestions for me to try?

The Yamaha showroom in plaza is really pathetic at the moment.. lack of decent higher end basses to try so I'm open to other brands...or maybe i'll just order one direct from japan?

Any inputs appreciated.

I'm primarily looking at 4 stringers. I like a really punchy tone with some growl. I tend to lean towards actives more than passives. Bass must not be too heavy. I'm open to different neck shapes but must be comfy I guess.

Thanks!

The best bass Ive tried with growl and thats really flexible with tone is the G&L L-2000 bass. And with your budget you can consider the American made ones. As well, you can give lakland skylines/shorelines a go. If youre into jazz, precision or humbuking basses. cheers!

hmm how about an Ibanez SR1004EFM? though i don't think it can be found anywhere in Singapore. maybe you can go to the coming Swee Lee mid-year sale on 31 May to take a look. Cort has basses of the $1k+ range that may interest you. :)

Ibanez... hmm. Yeah, i have a church friend who's using an ibanez, not sure which model.. but it uses 2 9Volt batteries!! One for each pickup i guess.. sounds nice too.

hmm its a little chunky but still alright to play.
its sturdier then the normal jazz necks.
just a tad thicker then the precision's.
i loved the growl though.

2nd hand stingrays go for around 1.6-1.7k. lots of punch and growl, and you have your active 3-band eq right there. the maple fretboard may be a bit too bright for your tastes, so check out both types (maple/rosewood).

laklands go for somewhere in the same price range used as well... not as much aggressiveness as stingrays. think superjazz tone.

then you have your 'normal' jazz basses. get a nice set of overwound pickups and you'll have your punch and growl right there as well. '70s pickup positioning if you want more growl, '60s or '80s if you want more punch. don't discount greco/tokai copies, those are actually pretty good as well, and should not run you more than 800 locally.

warwicks have lots of growl, but not as much punch as some jazz basses i've used. it's a love-hate thing... the tone wasn't for me. if you're used to fender-style necks, the 24-fret neck may not be up your alley either. remember to give the bass a good once-over with oil/wax when you first get it if you do. and watch that neck closely... they're more prone to warping than other necks i've seen.

all can be had for less than 2k used. i've only used a g&l once or twice so i don't think i can give a good review as compared to the others... you could try asking ken. you either like the g&l tone or you don't, so it's always best to try first.

also, 2 9v batteries are for 18v operation. it's supposed to give the bass more headroom for you to play with eq before your signal starts to distort.. whether it's useful or not is up to you.

best of luck in your search!

I would certainly like to try a second-hand stingray... heard so much about them.. If it has the punch as well as the growl as you say... must sound pretty good. :) I prefer a more aggressive tone actually most of the time as compared to mellow...

Thanks for all the input guys!!! I'm abit clearer now in what to look at...

Will be scouting around.

Can try the 2008 fender jazz and precisions... (made in america ones... )
the upgrades look quite appealing... can refer to the latest bass player magazine for the review.
=)

i'll be borrowing a stingray from a friend soon; i'll record some samples and upload them... then you can see if it's what you want or not.

the 2008 fender lineup looks pretty good! precisions will have lots of punch but not as much growl as what i think you're looking for. still, doesn't hurt to give them a try :)

Wow great! Thanks man!

Yeah upload the samples and i can take a listen... :)

Oh yeah, my friend's Ibanez is a BTB.. I remember the logo on the headstock.

yay! 1 up for stingrays! my fave bass thruout. :)

just note that its just more or less one tone, but many variations of it... from flea to pino. but if its agressive that you're looking for then look no further.

u just need to find someone to part with it, or order from overseas.
