Locking tuners

Are locking tuners effective in helping to keep tunings? The stock tuners on my epi lp std have been going out of tune more frequently and I can;t afford to go out of tune. What brands should I look out for and such

I already searched around on the search engine and it seeing companies pitch their products doesn't really get me anywhere nearer to what I need to know.

Going out of tune occurs not just at the tuners. If the tuners are the problem, then loking tuners will help. If your nut or bridge is the problem, the locking tuners will do nothing.

standard brands like

Gotoh
Sperzel
Grovers

all work fine. No issues here.

Difference in some is their physical size and their locking mechanism.

Some requires a coin to lock from the top of the headstock.
Some requires to lock from a wheel at the bottom, sometimes quite easy to lose that wheel when over loosening.
Some if I can remember correctly, auto locks while you tune up.

What is YOUR preference?
You have an epi les paul and do you want to keep that same look or do you want to use modern looking tuners?

Also a spec for tuners to note is the RATIO, how many turns on the tuning peg to make one turn on the tuning post. This affects how precise you can turn the tuning peg to tune the string.

Biggest mistake of locking tuner users is to string up and wrap their strings 3-4 rounds on the tuning post like normal tuners.

WRONG!

Defeats the whole purpose of locking tuners. String em up, pull em almost tout(how tout is by experience) and let it wrap around 1/2 turn on the post when fully tuned.

Hope this help in your selection. For me, I've got no preference or needs for locking tuners. Just that I've used them and installed them before. All works the same, all is good.

After typing all this...

How do you stringup your guitar?
How many turns of strings on the post?
Are your guitar nut lubricated?
What is your playing style? Do you bend strings often?
What is your string gauge?

the gotoh locking kluson tuners I use on my bonnie strat are excellent.... major prob I could say about self locking type though is even after you detune, theres minimal string clearance from the pick guard - so - if this is not at issue then fine & good..

add superglue to e nut and strings after you tune up!

*childrens, please do not try this at home!*

Auto-trim unit is an aplludable innovation but it's plastic, some rough handling may result in easy cracking. however, chances of this happening is slim, unless you are the smash-my-guitar-afetr-play type...

can't be...

i sold them off without even installing- the alignment doesn't match Ibanez's... lesson learned there... :smt069

drownedout,

Like what sub said, the Planetwaves locking tuners' screws are plastic. The screw that I'm referring to is the black color portion that is used to clamp and lock the string firmly in position. Since it is plastic, it may wear out more easily.

To add on, the autotrim is not that useful (see the yellow arrow above) if you want to leave more coils around the tune peg. For some reasons, some guitarists do prefer to leave a few more coil around the peg even though it is a locking tuner, for more stability i guess.

Go for those all-metal material ones. I've tried Schallers & Sperzels, they are good.

Do note that you may need to drill small pivoting holes at the back of your guitar headstock to install such locking tuners. Drill hole that is slightly bigger than the pivoting pin of the machine head, so that you can adjust the tuners to be more "in-line", be it the 6-in-row or 3+3 config, afterwhich you may tighten the position with the front nuts.

i think you not the only one who tot it was plastic.

read here

They are tool steel trimmer with die cast alloy construction.
They are bang for the buck....!
I doubt the people of planet waves will hang their reputation with plastics !!

how the heck is plastic gonna hold a metal string....speak with some sense!!

having plastic parts doesn't plunge the manufacturer into disrepute- if it works, it works.

whatever material the auto-trim was made from, some players deem it a little too fragile.

gsonique,

I used to have the planetwaves ones. I sold it away.

you've noted that I'm talking about the black color portion of the tuner, the part that you screw tight after you insert the string thru' the tuner peg hole.

That part IS plastic.

Check it out.

Any owners wanna confirm that? Or, "davisguitar" can confirm this too.

so now its not plastic ??
..i play hard and its has not given me any quirks ... has been 14 months since purchase.
For the price its a bang ..These ones are the cheapest good ones in the market ....thats my recommendation.
The Sperzel are excellant (has minor quirks) ..so if you have ~$90 bucks go ahead !!

Its good to give a review but get your facts straight !!

be specific 'how many players?" what is "little too fragile?"
