Locking tuner users

my 2 sets still running fine for a while already. Planetwaves rocks for me albeit a bit on the chubby heavy side. Heavy headstock more sustain some say yes no?

Yes.

I really like locking tuners. I never tried the schallers but I did have Sperzels on my Parker Nitefly and it was great. I assume Schallers are even better.

Right now, I have the PRS locking tuners on my Tremonti and I have to say they hold the tuning very well in the absence of locking nuts and the presence of a tremolo.

haha. noted guys!

I'm leaning towards sperzels cause Im abit concerned with the weight of the schallers ive been reading up on.. I dont want the feel of my strat to be comprimised.

Heres another question to throw at the well-educated dudes.

Does the gear ratio matter alot? This is as I read that the schallers are 16:1 or 18:1 (Cant rmb) whereas the Sperzel trim loks are only 12:1 (or so ive read)

Anyone care to clear up any misconceptions?

Thanks!

Gear ratios decide how much you need to turn to get a certain change in pitch. But this torque you apply with your fingers can also be varied (on the schallers) by the screws on the pegs.

For me, the ratios don't really bother me that much. As for the concern about weight, I solved that by changing the metal pegs to pearloid pegs, which are a lot lighter than the metal ones.

And honestly, they're not that much heavier than klusons.

Thanks for the clarification Whitestrat.

hmmm. I also occasionally drop tune down to Drop D.

Will not having a drop tuner like the D thing affect me?

I just thought of this as i would need to set the string for sperzels such that its tight at the start before tuning. if i down tune to D, would the string pop out? (I go down to drop C at times to TRY "neon" by John Mayer or Open D tuning some times)

these have caught my attention too.. any reports on the steinbergers?

The ratio does make a little bit of difference, the Sperzels are a lower ratio than the Schallers. But really you adjust to it quickly without noticing.
when you pull the string tight before locking, its still waaaay below a D so drop tuning is not an issue.
Btw they dont have to be pulled super tight, just take all the slack out before tightning the lock.
As for weight the Sperzels are the lightest. It really depends on the type of guitar you have, I wouldnt put Schallers on an SG style guitar, the headstock would be permantly pointing at the ground!!
With a strat It shouldnt make that much difference, rpvided it is well balanced.
Its a pity more guitar makers dont take balance into consideration when designing guitars, I reckon its very important for the overall comfort of the player. If you feel like the guitar is an extension of your body when it is well balanced, then you play better, Simple ergonomics really

Just installed these last week .... on a Strat tho :)

What are those goose bro?

Looks good! My current tuners have the fender logo on them too. hahah.

found em. hmmm. how're they so far?
The system looks similar to the sperzel one.. does it work the same way?

are the posts staggered to eliminate the string trees?

some say that brand is on the heavy side too..

Just a note. I'm going ahead with the Fender Schaller locking tuners.

Gonna order my set today or tmrw.
