reckless-sham, we are not anti government. We are anti-anti-local culture. Meaning people who have the assumption that foreign acts are necessarily better than local acts; ALL local acts. Because there are tons of great underground, indie, and mainstream bands that have so much to say but so little platform to do it (With enough national appreciation).
Fame and fortune? You must be caught up with an idealised impression of things, or following the "Book of Overused Cliches". There is no local band, NONE, in combined 'fame and fortune' that can touch the popularity and fortune of say , Stephanie Sun. And instead of bickering like jaded cynical anti-fame and fortune musicians (like the usual overused cliched), we could at least get together to raise the local scene as a collective to better and higher grounds. Something to call o ur own, a genuine culture to be proud of.
In the early years, the government banned live performances shortly after their fears of the 'hippie scene' was thriving too quickly. The use of drugs, and the stereotypes that came with 'band' music concerned the governemtn, thus making them decide to enforce a clamp down on live concerts held by local acts. It was this drastic move that killed the upwards momentum of the local scene and left it stifled for years on end. The local scene is finally on an upwards turn with bigger media support, and a larger group of interested teenagers who take the time to come down to plenty of well-organized indie, underground, and mainstream concerts. Efforts put together with a lot of heart and sweat from these organizers. Many of which lose money in the process. Many bands that record 'mainstream' or 'indie' albums use a minimum of 15k thousand dollars of their own money to produce, record and master their albums. In Singapore, NO major labels have A&R departments catering to local bands whatsoever, in any form of shape. This means that there is no official marketing team, no financial support, and no advertising funds allocated to any of these local bands. It applies for the indie scene as well, where many bands and organziers fork out their own money to rent equipment and sell tickets at low prices to get the people to come. This means that bands such as us, Electrico, Saw Loser to the hundreds of talented young bands out there craft their own fate with their own hands, blood, tears and sweat.
So, think again when you talk from such a biased and limited point of view, when you decide to rant on about 'hairdos' and 'fancy clothes'. There is a wider perception to be seen. It's easy to rant, but it takes time to actually have a deeper understanding of things.
But at the end of the day, ask yourself this. How much are you willing to actually contribute to the scene that you are part of, without complaining about the drawbacks of the obstacles that ALL of us will face?
But you have your point of view, so kudos and respect to that. I won't diss you for that. I just hope in writing all these things out it will give you a better perception of what the local band scene is really like. Most bands will be able to relate to how hard it can get at times, and how giving up is always the easiest option. But the reason why bands don't give up is because all of us want a culture we can call uniquely Singaporean. If I was out having 'fame and fortune', my friend, I wouldn't be writing in this forum now and taking a stand where I could be easily criticized for it. But I am. And it's in the hopes that the younger bands will be willing to work their asses of and do our country proud as musicians, artistes and music lovers..
Cheers.
