every saturday night i hear:
"daddy no NOO!!!!!!! NOOOO!!!!!!! AAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!"

8O ..the child prolly scored 1 marks short of a 100..im betting tts the reason.

well i am just curious how do you soundproof ur room? how much does it cost is there a soft post for it alrdy super interested :D

I think its only worth it to attain a lisence for instruments
if you have a freakin loud instrument like the drums.

cause you cant control the volume on them. and difinetly
they are a nuisence to the poor fellow living below you.

for guitar, basses, pianos.. i dont think its nessasary as you
can control the volume of your instruments and you and adjust accodingly.
you'll know your over the limit when the guy below comes up to your house.

well just like we live in a mutli racial society, getting used to each other's
customs and traditions, s'poreans should learn the live with the musicians of S'pore.

That or daddy has an unhealthy tendency with children... : /

i have a drumset which is fitted with muffled mesh heads.. and rubber pads on the cymbals.. in other words, its pretty damn quiet compared to a usual kit. i can still sleep in my room while my brother is bashing away.. we are considerate enough not to play too early.. we start maybe ard 11am and we never go later than 730pm.. we put 3 layers of carpets under the kit.

BUT our neighbours downstairs have no idea how lucky they are to have neighbours like us.. they write a letter saying we are disturbing their sleep and dinner.. recently they came up and called for a discussion abt the "problem". i went down to their house to hear wat the noise was.. THE "NOISE" was so MINUTE that when u turn on the fan in their room, the fan motor noise will drown it.. its just a very slight "tud" created by the bass drum kick pedal when we step on it.. found out he works the nightshift and wants to sleep in the afternoon.. but just becos he wants to sleep in the day doesnt mean the whole blk must keep quiet right?! he expects us to cut the noise or stop playing totally.. i tink its pretty unfair.

any suggestions on how to solve the problem?

I compromise with my good neighbours by not playing any hard-rocking things on my drumset, thus little muffling need to be done on my kit. Some may think this kills the joy of playing, but it forced me to explore different styles of music that doesn't require loud playing, such as jazz or funk.

I must add, most new HDB flats seems to have the floor/ceiling "thinner". Is it just for my flat?

give him a big f you and tell him to shut up. mesh heads and rubber pads dont make much noise at all. you dont have an obligation to compromise just because he wants to sleep in the afternoon. you've done your fair share, so you can keep a clear conscience. he doesnt have a case against you.

it would be pretty difficult to tell tat to a neighbour.. haha. my parents also dun wanna lose face.. often they will sms my parents and tell them to ask us to stop playing.. so it very hard ah u see.. and when i said neighbourS i meant more than 1 unit.. the unit 2 floors below me also complain but he is not really making a big fuss.. but its becos the 2 of them are always ganging up on us so he ends up making a fuss too.. any idea how to sound proof our floor? if 3 carpets still dun do the trick i tink its time for another alternative. :(

do what blueprintstudios told ya.definitely worked for me for quite sometime, gonna try the macdonald's thing soon...

wah lao jono, if your neighbour 2 floors down can hear, then i think it really is quite loud man?? haha... :) 2 floors down is quite a lot leh...

frankly speaking, to really sound proof your is really gonna cost quite a lot. a friend of mine sound proof his room for $5k. it's considered cheap because the proofing is only the surrounding walls as he live in a private house. no one affected at the top and bottom.

for the rest of us who live in hdb, the ceiling and floor will be affected also. and the floor is the most difficult to sound proof because it's not only got to resist sound wave but the vibration impact of the drums... and maybe the guitarist jumping... haha...

and with our budget, whatever "sound proofing" we do is limited and no guarantee...

hey guys,

Ive been looking and so far nothing has come up yet, the hdb.gov.sg webbie seriously has nothing on the licence.. il probably head down to the office to find out more,

for us drummers its quite a problem, coz we can only control so much of the sound and using wire mesh as skins really sucks coz you dont get the feel of a real kit...

il let you guys know soon. once i head down to the hdb office.. personally soundproofing a room is gonna cost a bomb the money is better spent in buying more gear.

dude!! thx so much! please update as soon as u get the info!! very grateful of the effort u're taking!

hmmm, quit playing drums and pick up the recorder, and always remember to practice with the window open

at home i got a drumset too, but i also have a neighbour that practice the recorder with the window open, so far no complaints so.....

3rd sarcasm-in-your-face method : hang earplugs + a sign on your door : "Specially entitled to singaporeans and my lovely neighbours. Take 1 per person only. Swallowing hazard, keep out of reach of children."

:!: use this method only if you can start the fire and able to keep up with the heat. :!:

60¢ worth.

Yo Guys I've called HDB and talk to a few officers but they told me there is no license for playing musical instrument and as long as we don't play too late at night it should be ok. It all boils down to neighbours. Either they live with it or they can shift hse ...lol ha ha ha
