Let's Build a Jamming Studio!

Okay guys say I have a $10-15k budget and an empty 200 sq metre room, which is rectangular more than it is square. How can I turn it into a Jam Studio? Where can I get value for money equipment?

I would probably need (in a nutshell):
Guitar Amps, two of them
Bass Amp
Mic stands and Mics
Monitors
Drumset
Cables
Keyboard plus Amp

Anything else I missed? Oh, as for soundproofing, I heard that the place is already soundproof. Remember, all I have is an empty room and $10k.

I figured since I know nuts about buying equipment for a studio, I should ask SOFTies who do know. And yes, I'm new here. HI!

i can speak from a consumer's point of view lah

basically the bass amp needs to be around 3 times as powerful as the guitar amp. this is because low bass frequencies require much more power to be amplified compared to higher guitar frequencies.

you have mics and mons, but you didn't mention a mixer... so you will need that as well.

what i dont like about small studios is that feedback is very hard to avoid. thats because of the monitor and mic placement in such a small room

Well this room, I can safely say, is bigger than the average jamming studio, so we'll see how it works out, whether there can be an arrangement with minimal feedback.

hee...hee... a normal HDB 5 room flat is about 100 sq metre. So, this is about 2 HDB flat's size.

i'm not well versed in jamming equipments beyond guitars and drums, but i know that besides the equipments being value-for-money, it's gotta have standard. don't get some crappy amp that no one likes to play on. your customers won't come back

and okay lah, it's not twice the size of my house.. okay let's just say it's about two and a half times the size of beat merchants studio 1 (for want of a better comparison) which i was hoping can be used to hold little little monthly gigs.

anyway let's not go off topic the idea here is in it's infantile stages, once the budget is approved and i get things going i'll promote the place on SOFT. in the meantime, thanks for the input thus far!

One. Okay, I was thinking, would a 30W-practice-amp-type amplifier suffice or should I go all out with those JCM2000 types with cabs?

Oh, the studio is gonna be in a community centre..

cos i happen to be working in one right now and there are certain rules and regulations that are quite strict.

like for one:

20. Volumes of amplifiers and other noise generating activities, including opening and closing of roller shutters should be kept to a minimum.

Hi TS, here are my 2 cents worth.

30W combos might just work with appropriate mic-up.

If I may suggest, why not consider building a niche jamming studio focusing on Acoustic ensembles. Invest on a good set of PA, maybe 12 channel mixer, 4-6 DI boxes and mics and stand. Consider also some percussions like egg shakers, djembe, bongos, etc. & maybe an acoustic bass guitar. You might just kick start a culture of acoustic jamming at your CC where residents young and old could appreciate together. Try not spend on high end stuff no matter how tempting it is as these are usually good to have items. But it doesn't mean compromising with 'lowest quotation' system typical of financial guidelines.

Wharfedale mics (3.0 and 4.0 available at city music) are good buys. PA systems available there too. Best to speak to real persons who will go onsite to view the room before giving specific recommendation. Best to put together a well integrated system rather than random purchases that may not complement each other.
