Korg Oasys

The Korg Oasys has been rumoured for a while while it is still in development. I must say that the NAMM launch looks impressive - everything Korg could think of was put into it. I wonder how much it would cost - looks like close to 5 figure.

I'll wait for the AL-1 component to be released separately.

Let's look at the following:
1) can a ROMpler compete with the sample lib that some manufacturers are releasing on DVD for software sampler? I mean it could have 600+MB of memory but a DVD contains GBs of data.
2) do you need another sequencer?
3) do you another multi-track HD recording (and can't use the VST of your choice)?
4) do you need another keyboard? And CD writer?
5) after all these years, do you seriously think that a single keyboard can replace a whole studio? The manufacturers have been singing this tune since the Korg M1 but it hasn't happened.
6) lastly, will you seriously pay >$10k for this? I think joel68 is happier with 2xTrition Extreme at <$6K. (240 note polyphony! vs 172 polyphony for the PCM section)

BTW could anyone advise whether the Oasys is
1) 172 voice (PCM) + 84 voice (AL-1) + ? voice (CX-3) polyphony

Or is it

2) 172 voice (PCM) OR 84 (AL-1) OR ?voice (CX-3) polyphony

Some food for though after the euphoria over the hype.

Ps - the Alesis workstations appear a lot more tempting with their cheaper prices.

Of course there's no way an integrated workstation can compete with separate ROMplers, DAW etc. But there's always those who want everything into one to lug around for travel (how heavy is the Oasys anyway?). But then again, one don't need everything into one to have a portable setup.

Still, it is an big and brave attempt by Korg - although I doubt the market is going to large. It still looks impressive to me - but there's where it will stay. Same thing goes for the Neko. With the price of Neko, I can easily get a rack of computers AND a controller keyboard and still remain fairly portable with more power than the Neko by itself.

Korg is bringing back Vector Synthesis which I'm very keen of!

There's cheaper ways of getting into Vector Synthesis:

1) VSTi

antti Augur Synth (Wavetable)
Bitheadz Unity Synth Expander 1 Synth (Unclassified)
ConcreteFX Kubik Synth (Wavetable)
Cycling '74 Pluggo Various
General Vibe VectorSector Vector Synth
Jonas Norberg ZingerDX Wavetable Synth
Korg Wavestation Synth (Wavetable)
LoftSoft cesSynth3 Synth (Wavetable)
MOTU MX4 Synth (Hybrid)
Native Instruments Reaktor Synth (Modular)
Native Instruments Reaktor Session Synth (Unclassified)
rgc:audio z3ta+ Waveshaping Synth
Sam Chip32 Synth (Wavetable)
Shin'en SHN-1 Synth (Wavetable)
Spectra SD VE41 Synth (Wavetable)

2) 2nd hand gear
- City Music was selling the Korg wavestation EX @$350 ~2-3 years ago.
- this gives an estimate of the 2nd hand market value of this synth.

3) Hybrid - the Creamware Pulsar System also has a Vector Sequencing synth. The 6 DSP Pulsar Scope will cost you less than $2k.

Wavestn EX

thank you for the info again, LowJK !

Too bad, I didn't catch the action the last time Citymusic had a big wipeout sale, only bought a O3RW and a X5DR. Right now, I'm waiting for my shipment of Wavestn SR from aboard, hopefully it gets in. If not have to resort to Korg Legacy. Anway I'll get it for the other Legacy synths.

Anyone selling their Korg Wavestn ?

The Korg OASYS is a workstation synthesizer
implemented on a custom Linux operating system and is designed to be arbitrarily expandable via software updates, with its functionality limited only by the PC-like hardware.

Features
The standard Oasys comes with a hardware similar to many personal computers:

2.8 GHz Pentium 4 CPU
40Gb hard disk drive
1Gb DDR RAM
10.4" LCD touch screen
It features Korg's OASYS (acronym for Open Architecture SYnthesis Studio) technology, which allows multiple synthesis engines to be used simultaneously. The OASYS also includes second-generation KARMA technology (with the first generation having first appeared in the Korg KARMA). It has either a 76-key synth-action or 88-key hammer-action keyboard.

Synthesis engines
As of October 10, 2006 the latest version of the OASYS OS is 1.2.1, featuring the following synthesis engines:

HD-1: A PCM synthesizer, with 628Mb of wave ROM
AL-1: A model of a 96-note polyphonic analog synthesizer (84 notes in previous versions of the OS)
CX-3: A modelled tonewheel organ based on the current CX-3
STR-1: A Plucked String physical model
LAC-1: Korg Polysix, an analog model, and Korg MS20, an analog model

where's vector synthesis ?
