Anyone here know how many wires the Kinman pickups have? I know they're stacked hums with one coil for noise cancelling. Does that mean they have 4 conductor wires like splittable hums, 2 wires like regular single coils or some proprietary wire setup?

The site doesn't say much about the actual wiring + no pics to show how their harness is actually wired up. Plus he says he will provide a wiring diagram to wire his pickups for SSH config to his customers on request. I take that to mean that he doesn't want his wiring diagrams to be too public.

I'm thinking of saving on the cost of the Kinmans harness and using my own switch and has-sound pots to wire up a SSH.

Could always ask the man when I make the purchase but right now I'm kinda deciding between the pseudo single coil Kinmans and duncan single sized hums that sound more like p90s. Just want to know if there's some weird proprietary wiring involved with the Kinmans from owners who have them installed.

If it's 2 wires it'll be great. Means I won't have to go near a megaswitch.

this is what you will see from the cable coming from the baseplate of the kinman PU. The one jutting outta middle goes to gnd. The red goes to pickup selector switch.

this is the same as my kinman blues set. Shud be the same for his other pu.

oh, megaswitch can be gotten from davis. They have the fender and all parts one. Both quality about the same, but fender one is round 10 bucks more..

Thanks a lot! That's a big help.

Now the component acquisition and weeks of waiting on shipping can begin. :)

I think a standard 5-way will work. I'm just looking at the standard SSH config but with a mid boost+cut tone pot for the singles and a no-load pot for the bridge and running everything off a 250k volume.

so you getting the no load tone or diy with normal pot?

Iam in the midst of trying to rewire my strat too. Gonna put in 500k for the volume. Love to make it piercingly bright and plus diy no load tone pot, wanna build up some earwax

I'm not exactly sure how to diy a no-load. Probably can find out how with a bit of searching. I'd kinda like an indent on 10 for the no-load like the Fenders. Will probably buy one unless I can find an indented pot somewhere.

BTW, ever go for a ear canal clean with warm water at the doctors? Cleans out all the wax and gives you a few hours of super sensitive hearing. You'd hear details you've never heard before.

I don't know if I'd call it a service. I accidentally clogged my ear with earwax once and the doctor gave me some ear wax solvent and told me to come back after dissolving the wax overnight. Next day nurse synringed my ears with warm water and all the wax came out. Looked very nasty. They recommended that it be done every 6 mths to a year. Better than using ear buds or digging it out yourself.

It's like being superman with bionic ears for a while.

woahhh, reading that actually makes me feel something wriggling in my ears

the diy no load pot can be found here

i have done it and fixed up in 2 of the tele i got. It works fine. Only thing is no indent feel and that when turning down to normal postion or to no load position, theres a slight click be heard thru amp. Might be a no no if you using much of tone knob for swelling. If set and play kind of, then shud not be a problem.

I'm envisioning a fair bit of no-load to load twiddling on the hum, so indent will have to be the way to go.

And I musn't forget the treble bleed cap.

470pf for the treble bleed? Or you using the resistor parallel/series with cap for it instead?

I tried 470pf for the treble bleed as recommended by the tech i trusted! Its working nicely. Did try changing to 220pf cap also, it muffled a bit as the volume knob turn down, i didnt really like that. But some say its more natural than having the 470pf where the brightness remained when turning down the knob.

who's that tech???? hur hur hur....

anyways... kinmans? nahhh.... give BILL LAWRENCE anytime... long long time... wait until nosebleed time... but anytime!!!

Not sure about that yet. I was thinking of 220pf and seeing how I'd go from there. The fun's in being able to tweak. :)

maybe can try using crocodle clip with wire in place of where the components are and just clip the cap/resistor in between. Shud be quite interesting for fun

I think the indent ones can get from Guitar Workshop. Check if they have.

Get 2 220pf if you want to try both. then solder both in series for 440pf, which is about the same as a 470pf.

Davis stocks the Fender No Load pots. :) Only in 250k... for you strat lovers, or dark humcbuker tone lovers.

I find a 1meg for tone pot to be more responsive though.

How much does a tone pot, since its wired in parallel, load the circuit?
