Keyboards Not A Priority in Bands?

Stevearson,

Watch your language. At least have the courtesy to show some forum etiquette. Voicing your view point is one thing; making derogatory comments with foul language is another.

i think that most people are wrong when they say keyboardists, or rather pro keyboardists are a dying breed. i noticed across several bands that the divide is great. they're either damn pro, or they're like me damn crap. the pro ones move on to jazz, funk or progressive. And if u ask me, i don't think there are many bands that can handle these genres. i certainly can't.

but on the other hand, thousand of poor keyboardists (like me) constantly gets shot by the other band members for not being good enough etc etc.. sigh.. its a tough world man. its not easy being a damn keyboardists lugging ur keys around half way across the world just to jam.

take pity on us. go easy man. give us some space, credit, and a hand (in moving instruments :) )

All i know is, keyboardist is as important as the drummer or the guitarist themselves. They add colour, feel and texture to the song and at most time leads the tunes and melodies for the vox.If you know what i mean...hehe well, all i know is, i cant imagine my band without one! hehehe...

Yo SoulD_Out you can say that cos u got such a handsome(See Pic Below) and talented keyboardist ... ask him how he learn his moves huh?. But i dont like your Guitarist lah

The Keyboardist

Heck, i know lots of Grade 8 or even DIPLOMA student who dont know how to handle solos or play by ear or even band ethics (Some doesnt even know how to improvise in a band).

The fact is playing in a band and playing classical piano is very different. I think what you've said is really unfair. Have you tried taking the Diploma exam before?? You think it's easy to entertain the examiner for 40minutes straight with pieces from Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Contemporary, sight-read a piece of Grade 6-8 standard etc??

The fact that these people have got a diploma cert shows that they do know something..I dunno how they'd have gotten to diploma standard if they can't identify modulations, cadences etc..

I know of Grade 8 students who can tell stuff like Minor 13 intervals upon hearing so I don't see how "playing by ear" is a problem and hence, pls dun depreciate these people with your stereotyping..

And I'd like to add that Rudess is a prodigy...you don't exactly come across such people very often do you? Like do you think Singapore produces truckloads of Clare Yeos every year??Or do you think that a Mozart comes by every century??please lar...we've waited for 2 centuries and Mozart hasn't reappeared yet... Please be fair to people who are obviously not prodigies and slogged for that Grade 8 or Diploma cert...

I tot keyboardist is indespensible in a rock or pop (top40s) band. Almost all pro band would have to have one.

Even in a metal band a keyboardist can add colors and feel to the music....... just like the metal fathers Deep Purple (drool), Uriah Heep......etc.

A keyboardist have the best in technology, ever new effects, sounds and realism is possible today.... and still getting better.

I don't agree a keyboardist can die, as one can even replace the whole band by careful sequencing.

You're right! Playing classical piano and keyboard are two totally different things. I think Keyboardman is trying to say that same point. I believe the key word is "slog". We classical pianists slog for years to get our Grade 8/ Dips etc. Not to mention trying to balance ABRSM exams and school exams. When we start to work, we don't have the time to slog anymore. Switching to keyboard playing is a totally different ballgame - require the same amount of effort and time as our ABRSM exams if we want to be good and not mediocre. So back to my main point: continue to slog and don't stop!

Yo Chill Out Man ... Look at the title of this thread it's "Keyboards Not A Priority in Bands" See the word "in BANDS". So we are talking about how keyboardist can contribute in a BAND here.

I've got nothing against these Grade 8 students who aspire to be a solo pianist and Keyboardist. BUT, my point is that how these ppl can use their TECHNIQUES in a Band.

What you learnt in Grade 8 or Diploma is sufficient to make you become a solo Pianist but not to play in BAND. (I've taken those exams so i am able to say smth bout this).

We are talking about Keyboardist in the BAND context here, Mate, And not as A Soloist.

The fact that these people have got a diploma cert shows that they do know something..I dunno how they'd have gotten to diploma standard if they can't identify modulations, cadences etc..

So what if they know the TECHNIQUES? If they can't use it in playing in a Band. It is utterly USELESS Unless you play solo.

There are lots of things about playing in a Band that you can not learn in music schools(Eg: Quarel, Band Politics, How you interact with your Band mate, Band Ethics, Sounds and Harmony or even "Fighting over Girls"(he he ... That also Happens)).

So I believe that Music and Sex has one thing in common:
"IT IS MORE FUN TO DO IT WITH MORE PEOPLE RATHER THAN DOING IT ALONE"

I've got a fren taking that Diploma exam and complains about it being very stressful. So i give him this ADVICE
in which
My teacher and incidentally my Band Leader says the same things:

"IF YOU CANNOT ENJOY YOUR MUSIC. HOW DO YOU EXPECT YOUR AUDIENCE TO ENJOY ALSO"

CALLING to All keyboardist who felt that they are being pushed around by Band Members cos they feel you are not GOOD enough

"IF your GUITARIST can do those INCREDIBLE SOLOS on the GUITAR, Why cant you do it in the KEYBOARD?" Heck, just do that "FLIGHT OF BUMBLEBEE" you learnt in Music School using SYN LEAD Sounds on the Keyboard and He will WORSHIP YOU!!!

"Dont let your GUITARIST or BASSIST ALWAYS tell you what to do!! RULE THEM!!!" (Play your part in Music arrangement)

"PRACTISE PRACTISE PRACTISE!!! Like your GUITARIST DO!! AND DONT LET HIM ALWAYS TAKE THE SPOTLIGHT!!"

All Keyboardists sitting in front of the computer including ME, those who agrees with me, Let's us STAND UP, PUT YOUR RIGHT HAND ON YOUR RIGHT CHEST and SAY "YEAH, KEYBOARD ROCKS!!!!"

Lol. Nice one keyboardman. Relax guys, keyboardist are equally as important. We're here to chat abt music, dont take this personal because of one stevearson. Go find a life steve.

ehh mr keyboard man... i also dun like my keyboard player ah.. since its you.. muahaha... and about the handsome thingy, well...... i still have my doubts... you dun look a little like mr stiller but rather.. hmm.. lets see... maybe if you add stiller+the 'girls' from white chicks then were talking.. heaheha... have fun carrying your 20kg keys around man... suddenly you wish you were a guitarist huh... hahhaa. cheers man! seeyou tomolo.

Anyways... i agree about having sex with more than one.. hehahe.. you'd love a threesome anyday huh jon.. hehehe.. hmm.. ive been reading your threads.. and every thing seems SOOOOO FAMILIAR!! hehahe... and anyway.. guitarist dun always take the spotlight... in my band.. the keyboardist is always hogging the spotlight... hehehe

guitarist dun always take the spotlight... in my band.. the keyboardist is always hogging the spotlight

U got a problem with that ...

Let's settle it this SUNDAY

1 on 1 SOLO match

AT

UNFORGIVEN

YEAH KEYBOARDIST ROCK !!!

Even though most bands do not have keyboardists in their band...but those who have, either improvise the songs or compose their own...now that is what I call cool...Keyboardists are equally important in the band too...I mean everybody in the band is important, even solo musicians are important...

It's just that keyboardists are always thought of as NOT IMPORTANT because most of the famous bands don't have keyboardists(eg. jrock stuff i'm talking here)...let's see...maybe one day, a lot of keyboardists are going to pop out in bands...LOL...I really hope so, I like keyboard~~

To me a keyboardist is a major asset to a band esp when u r abt to do a rock ballad that has a piano intro and such like "She's Gone from Steelheart"... Feeling babe...

*Takes out lighter*

Anyways.. mr keyboardMAN.. the duel is on baby!! bring it OONNNN!!!!

so why did the first keyboard player of Dream Theater
Kevin Moore quit after they made it to the big time with
the first two albums? because the ego maniacs wanted
a bigger pie of the dollar and control of the band! After
two or three change in keyboard line-up, they realised
they wanted a competent keyboard player, they call in
Jordan Rudess! Anyway Rudess is already a successful
solo artiste by himself!

I stopped listening to Dream Theater after
Kevin Moore quit! I now a fan of Chroma Key.

if you stopped listening to DT after kevin left, than trust me, you haven't heard dream theater. and if u've been following DT, they wanted rudess even before they got Kevin, but he was with the dregs then. its only because of liquid tension that rudess changed his mind in the end and when that happened, they let Kevin go. he isn't that great anyway.

i still prefer the bright sunshine
of 'Images and Words'
and the previous album.

the rest of the albums after
Kevin Moore are all bang here
bang there thrash everywhere
all noisy noise !!!

though i did enjoy 'Scene from From a Memory',
i hear traces of Queen, Pink Floyd and some
others.

Rudess is a keyboard virtuoso, no doubt about it.
Kevin Moore contribution besides a keyboard
player, is also the songwriter and lyrcist. I believe
he was trying to build the Dream Theater sound with
his sunshine atmospheric vision but the indian chiefs
got in the way. Strange the vocalist dun write the words?

Moore is more than a musician, he is one intelligent guy.
Check out his website. Good music is not just about playing
a thousand notes in a second, it's also about mood. That's
what Chroma Key and 'Images and Words' are all about.

where are the 'Wait for Sleep' and 'Space-Dye Vest' vibe?
nowhere to be found in any DT album.
