personal preference, is on 'Images n Words' guitar tracks. before he used his signature model. if im not mistaken an Ibanez RG550 was the main axe used in the studio. i like the overall mix on this DT release.

I have a VHS video of a couple of nice JP events, I was super into JP and the DT gang, Paulo should know this too!

And like Paulo I do prefer the mixes on the older DT albums, I thought the tones on Awake and Falling into Infinity were killer. The solo tones on Scarred from Awake, Trial of Tears and Lines in the Sand from Falling into Infinity :)

Anyhows, in the VHS there's a video of JP playing a Tom Anderson through a Mesa Boogie at NAMM.

Sounds the same to me, just like JP.

Honestly speaking, I feel his tone suits the music he does. I can't imagine a DT with another tone other than the growly dark dual rectifier trademark Mesa Sound. But I do admit JP's tone has changed, it's more gainy and organic now than it was before in the earlier stuff. However the essence still remains if you know what I mean, you still can hear the trademark JP voicing.

If she could be in G3, your gramps could qualify for Olympics. Oh yes, maybe i'm gone after this

Like what SoulJah said, i can't imagine DT with another guitar voice. JP's rig might have evolved over the years, if there was any major impact on his tone..I would say it's getting better.

Personal choices, off my head...Falling Into Infinity, Images and Words, some tracks off SFAM

There wasn't any derogatory intent in my reply anyway, conscience clear; good night's slp. Inverted commas for threatening?

Hi there...

This is by far my favourite Petrucci's tone:

He was still using the Boogie Mark IIC+ back then. During Petrucci/Rudess session he used Mark IV, which sound more or less identical to Mark IIC+. From what I've read, Mark IIC+, III (all stripes) and IV sound veeery similar. I know first hand that III and IV do.

This next one is my least favourite:

He's using Mesa Road King right now. You can hear the top end fizz in his sound. From what I've read, this fizz is inherent to the Road Kings and current Dual and Triple Rectos. Those that like Recto's huge crunch but also want the Mark series's smoothness usually will look for early dual channel Dual Rectos.

I'm not sure how you define "digitalish", but the top end fizz that you, or rather I, hear in his current sound might be what's causing it.

Say what u will but I absolutely love JP's tone...

My fav studio tone of his would definately be from LTE 2..

Live wise has to be when I was right infrot of his Mesa cabinets when in Singapore...

Well after watching the G3,JP's tone is way better than the two.

DT Then,Mark IIC+=Vintage
DT Now,RoadKing=Modern
Go Figure...

And please define 'digital'...

shredcow how can u say JP's tone is boring? haha. so how would you, much less anyone define "interesting" tone?

1. His tone cannot be boring if you have actually paid close attention to the later recordings, ala Live Scenes from a Memory and so on.. im pretty sure in his rackmount, i.e triaxis etc etc, there is a healthy combi and permutations of modulation and gain tones, and I fully believe that his tone CANNOT be boring.

2. Looking at songs on the live from budokan album, perhaps for example trial of tears..whoa.. the ethereal feeling you can get? Not boring my friend, not boring at all..

Come to think of it, what to you is "not 'boring' " tone? piu piu piu!! 8)

isnt boring subjective..

well..its shred's perception..

so wad do u tink is interesting dude (shredcow)?

Hey nicky, its just my opinion that JP's tone is boring, especially the neck pup tone. Just round and fat. And smooth... just... boring? (Thats why I'm trying to swap my neck humbucker, alnico magnet, to a ceremic one, lower output in hopes of not getting that kind of sound) The rhythm tone, while its powerful and heavy, its pretty much... just that?
Even with modulation.. things can be boring. JP doesn't use phasers like how Paul Gilbert does.

I think interesting tone is Mattias Elkundh's tone. His "neck" tone facinates me to no end, I can focus on his neck tone for ages! That is a multi-dimensional tone to me, where picking dynamics and picking position can be heard.

Ron Thal fits in too, but only with his Dimarzio chopper in neck position tone.

Guthrie Goven's latest CD has me stoked on his tone...

Paul Gilbert is tone (sound) is fine to me, and I like the way he uses a phaser to make his solos sound more vocal like. He has a repetitive style though.

Then lately, Edo83 passed me an album, Unlce Moe's Space Ranch... some totally out there fusion thing... and Bret Garsed's tone, or whoever is the guitarist there, is unbelievably interesting to me. I can sit down and just listen to how MANY voices that guy churns out... the 1st track blows me away already.

Anyway, personally, I find JP's playing boring, and people usually experience tone as playing nauces/styles in addition to sound. I really didn't enjoy JP's solo album and I stopped listening to it after a week I think. G3, i only watched his section once, then I skip him everytime after that.

Of course, MOST people find Mattias/Ron Thal/Bret Garsed as "noisy" and non-sensical, with the 1st 2 falling into "mindless" whammying squeals and squeaks. So yeap.
