John Petrucci Cover

FANTASTIC! Now all we need is a Jon Petrucci forum. Woo Hoo. I'd really like to see William Hung do a John Petrucci. Peeps like you doing covesr are so predictable. It's getting boring!

RoRK

that was great, esp when it was ur first time performing

and i think threads like this with ppl show casing their perfromances whether cover or originals usually expect compliments or negative comments that are constructive, not sarcastic no-brainers, attempting to be funny but failing miserably

Play your own music and stop crapping all over someone else's!

You got a problem with that!

RoRK On!

man who is the one crapping all over someones performance man, give em props dude, their first performance and it went quite smoothly, not easy to play petrucci on your first live performance

yea vheissu agree with u bout the screw issue

If you have ears, you would have listened!
If you had eyes you would have used them wisely.

Now that you are reading, I hope you get an eyeglass of your own and stop parading around with other people's music. It's bloody irritating! Dalif already has that area covered and there have been others.

Can't you guys take a decent joke and live with it!

Bloody EMOs parading as progressive rock dudes.

And honestly, and nothing to do with my earlier response, but if I wanted to listen to Petrucci's stuff, don't you think I would listen to him instead!?!?!?!?!

Play your own stuff. Nothing could be simpler!

RoRK

i only thought i want to perform something that was nice and i want to share with my friends, that's all

i'm sorry if that irritated you. i will perform something original next time then :)

hmmmm... looking at RoRK, i can only understand one thing, lemme get it straight here, so you have never played a cover, like the first thing u ever played (or do you even know how to play?) is an original? yeah? that's genius right there brother! :o

and lemme see, u are also saying "Bloody EMOs parading as progressive rock dudes." just because they are not playing an original, hmm... thats nice. Next time when i go to a classical concert, and they play Beethoven's 5th Symphony or Mozarts Concerti, i start laughing because it is a "decent joke". That's nice, great ideas RoRK! u're a great musician!

its just this lousy attitude to music in general to blame. a masterpiece is a masterpiece. why do pianists play others' music even up to grade 8? because its no mean feat to replicate it. why do we follow scales? someone else created the scales! OH NO. we are soo totally not being original.

eric johnson admitted to copying everyone when he first started out. where do we draw the line between copying and covering? where do we draw the line between an artist and a craftsman? everyone has their niche. don't be a dick and diss them. the entire blues genre covered each others songs. so... what say you to that? as a proponent of 'rock' that i observe you to be, surely you should know that rock has its origins in the blues?

come on man. this is totally the wrong forum to diss.
he's young man. i'm betting john petrucci himself would be impressed. so cool it.

Aiyah, first post was meant as a joke - although a little harsh. I'll admit that.

I used to play covers, although reluctantly, not too many though. But I put in my own solos. Then it was sayonara cos' originals then, in SIngapore was useless. You guys today have Soft, MySpace, Youtube and whole bunch of other avenues to venture into. Why do something that you will never OWN?!?!?!?!

Just want you guys to play your own stuff. Nothing beats that. And the more you do it, the better you'll be.

Believe it or not, I'm on your side!

My last post in this thread. I think I've made my point. And so did all of you. Kudos for that - for sticking out. But think long term. You're better off doing your own stuff early on. Trust me on this. At least you'll know if you're good enough. The best bands in the world had it in them when they were young. There are very few exceptions to this in the entire history of music-making. Perhaps it's a case of the record companies promoting younger folks but it's kinda hard to argue when the facts are stacked aginst you.

So, go headstrong at it while you're young. The sooner you're at it, the better it is for you in the long run.

Peace Out!
RoRK

A short addition - my .02 cents on covers - Do covers only after your band has converged/blended/become1 etc etc etc. Most of the great bands did covers but they sounded like themselves and not like the original - it was their rendition and oftentimes it was beautiful.

Here's an example of a great cover of All Along the Watchtower
http://www.myspace.com/dancingdogmuse

Granted, there could be better ones but the gist of it all is to make it your own!

The problem with bands doing covers is that they do it as the first thing. How sad, cos' it's totally wrong! You should only do is AFTER your own band has its own style/musical presence - then you sort out strut out your own stuff.

If you start off playing covers, chances are that you'll try to sound like the original and chances are that folks would rather listen to the original then yours - unless you're at a pub/club.

So, the morl of the story is - DO COVERS LAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Only after your band has jived together to create your own vibes/sting/feel/beat/style/whatever. Just my .02. I could be wrong but if I'm right - huh!

Peace Out!
RoRK

this is what you wrote at the end of ur thread

RoCk On / Peace Out -

You never create any peace in here. really. :)

I agree with RoRk.

You all should take a chill pill (hate this slang, ugh) and sit back, digest.

Re-read his posts in a different tone.

At least here is someone who is willing voice out on the subject of originality, challenging people to take the road less travelled.

Then again, here we would have the usual fare of silly, really silly people who would insist, "If you can't cook chicken rice, u can't say my chicken rice is bad!!!" kind of mentality. What has RoRk got to show for what he says?

That aside, RoRk actually IS doing something: he's been talking about doing his own music AND he's been posting his originals.

I really love the point RoRk brought up on how people when they do covers, they do it their way, their style. Too often, we just play a masterpiece of a cover, point for point, nuance for naunce for fear of infringing on the sacredness of said piece. A complete waste I say, when music such that a 100 musicians improvising over a chord progression can come up with 100 variations.

What's the point of a classical musician covering a classical masterpiece? Does he seek to emulate it down to smallest detail - a.k.a. do what a computer copying DVD-Rs (yes, technology update, no more CD-Rs) and just churn out "robot-ized" covers? Or is the musician who covers the masterpiece but imparts a bit of himself into it, bringing it IMO, to the next level, closer to it?

Even the point on "he's a young man", come on... ever known of someone who started music yearning to do his own thing? Yearning to write his own songs? Granted - so many sound alike, but isn't a songwriting spirit truely something?
To plop's credit, he says he would do something original next time, so really, a MAJOR + 1 to RoRk for making that happen.

"I used to play covers, although reluctantly, not too many though."

After listening to your originals, I wouldn't want to hear your covers. Absolute garbage.

"A short addition - my .02 cents on covers - Do covers only after your band has converged/blended/become1 etc etc etc."

Misguided and ignorant advice. Don't listen to this guy!

"Then again, here we would have the usual fare of silly, really silly people who would insist, "If you can't cook chicken rice, u can't say my chicken rice is bad!!!" kind of mentality. What has RoRk got to show for what he says? "

You summoned?
People are not stupid. They can always sense when a person lacks credibility. RoRk's own material stinks, and instead of just passing the thread by, chooses to "voice out on originality and challenge people to take the road less travelled."
Am I the only person to catch the irony?
