Aiyah, first post was meant as a joke - although a little harsh. I'll admit that.
I used to play covers, although reluctantly, not too many though. But I put in my own solos. Then it was sayonara cos' originals then, in SIngapore was useless. You guys today have Soft, MySpace, Youtube and whole bunch of other avenues to venture into. Why do something that you will never OWN?!?!?!?!
Just want you guys to play your own stuff. Nothing beats that. And the more you do it, the better you'll be.
Believe it or not, I'm on your side!
My last post in this thread. I think I've made my point. And so did all of you. Kudos for that - for sticking out. But think long term. You're better off doing your own stuff early on. Trust me on this. At least you'll know if you're good enough. The best bands in the world had it in them when they were young. There are very few exceptions to this in the entire history of music-making. Perhaps it's a case of the record companies promoting younger folks but it's kinda hard to argue when the facts are stacked aginst you.
So, go headstrong at it while you're young. The sooner you're at it, the better it is for you in the long run.
Peace Out!

A short addition - my .02 cents on covers - Do covers only after your band has converged/blended/become1 etc etc etc. Most of the great bands did covers but they sounded like themselves and not like the original - it was their rendition and oftentimes it was beautiful.
Here's an example of a great cover of All Along the Watchtower

Granted, there could be better ones but the gist of it all is to make it your own!
The problem with bands doing covers is that they do it as the first thing. How sad, cos' it's totally wrong! You should only do is AFTER your own band has its own style/musical presence - then you sort out strut out your own stuff.
If you start off playing covers, chances are that you'll try to sound like the original and chances are that folks would rather listen to the original then yours - unless you're at a pub/club.
So, the morl of the story is - DO COVERS LAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Only after your band has jived together to create your own vibes/sting/feel/beat/style/whatever. Just my .02. I could be wrong but if I'm right - huh!
Peace Out!
