* not sure whether repost, but did a search, didnt found any thread abt this, so just to share that there are crazy composer in this world.

Have you tried listening to silence?
It's a song!

and many have overly intellectualize it till the cows come home.

I think nothing of it.

OK art people. Flame me.

definitely it's a piece that i can listen to, that allows me to blast my speaker to the max without getting it spoilt!

I think the 2nd violinist messed up at around 2'15". If you listen carefully, you can hear him trying to unwrap a Fruitella but it makes a loud crinkling.

I like it though, and am thinking of getting this as my phone ringtone.

All handphone already had that function - Silent mode.

John Cage was inspired to composed this piece when he entered an anechoic chamber, expecting to hear silence, and found that he could still hear the sound of his blood circulating (and some other sound from his body). The whole point is to make you listen, expecting to hear nothing, and hearing the things you don't normally hear.

So vernplum: full marks! :P

Actually, the sound made by the audience etc (coughing, shuffling) are meant to be part of the piece itself. There cannot be total silence. That's the point of the piece.

Ever since I saw that a few years ago I have held the same opinion. Load of crap - it's not art, and it's certainly not music.

i can compose a longer piece with all the GREAT technicality of this piece... :D

Aenimic's 23mins 3 secs

but then hor... as one of my art friends explained to me, during that period, it was a BRAVE and CUTTING EDGE thing to do.

It made people think. Overwhelmed blah blah blah you know. Shock.

But today... I can't say it is relevant.

Maybe if you add it into your noise playlist or something like that. This silence CAN be quite refreshing.

Silence is usually not in a guitar player's vocabulary. And no, I ain't talking about hum canceling pickups :)

If you listen to most of the 20th century music, you'll hear wierder stuffs. I remember things like hitting a cymbal and then quickly submerging it into a pail of water etc.
