Joey Jordison

hey, just to add on... i think there is a fine line between being influential and being good. i have to say joey travis and yoshiki are realy good players BUT i do believe people like gadd and weckl are better (preference). the thing that seperates them is the level of influence they have. like funkifized said, gadd and co will never attract as many people as j,trav or yosh can.

influence and inspiration can start you off and bring you a long way as a drummer, but its through self experimentation and exploration that you can improve yourself holistically as a musician as compared to a metal/punk/whatever drummer. heh. just my 2 cents worth. =D

I like Joey for his straight up aggressive drumming.

But you can't say that Travis's style is not impressive. Have you seen a video of him doing rudiments on a snare? That was wicked.

piece of cake.. 8)

I really dig the fake flams, inverted cheeses and crazy flam taps that he throws into that solo. Plenty of visuals that aren't corny too, they're actually well built into the context of the solo. It's one of those rare drum solos that actually 'tell a story', if you know what I mean. Another one is 'frienz-en-a-frostie', http://www.drumhard.com/videos/mickey_burmer_pasic_2003.mov

I have tons and tons of stuff to share if you guys want, but it seems that most people are only interested in the joey jordison/yoshiki kind of drumming... you guys can PM me or something, I'll be happy to share the groove. There really is a lot of stuff that you can learn from just the internet and books alone, all you need is discipline.

no offence guys, but personally i really dont like the idea of drummers being divided between those who are influenced so-called "lousy but famous" and those influenced by people like gadd, chambers, etc. honestly, there has to be a spark that triggered off that desire to learn percussion/drums and no offence but many a time, i dont think that gadd or weckl were one of them

yea that's got a point

but different pple have different perspective of drumming..
some learn drumming cuz they think it's easy to attrack chicks
some learn for the sake of love for drumming and music.
SOME!

but in a way..either parties will come to a point where they develop maturity and those who think that they can attract chicks may stop thinking that way.

they oso get attracted to drumming cuz of different reasons rite?
as mentioned before in the earlier posts.. they make feel influenced by the style, the speed, the fame, the showmanship of other drummers and may oso aspire to be like on of them.

true that putting a drummer in a certain category of your own can be considered discrimination. but views are views. don't let them destroy ur personality as a drummer or ur drumming skills or watever. i'm sure joey doesn't give a damn if pple think that he's "famous but lousy". he'll probably be like..tell that dude to step up to face my double pedaling or f off.. besides, speed does require technique anyway.. it's unfair to classify joey as lousy but famous.. he's recognised for his pretty good double pedalin.. besides..playin metal by itself has it's own limits to style. but then again.. playin metal does not just mean fast rolls and machine gun double pedaling. i'm sure joey is capable of opening up the range of wat metal has to offer just that he hasn't realised or found out how to yet.. maybe he just has to wait to step upon that chance when it just strikes him..
then again..due to the tours and performances and shit all over the world.. there is very little time left for self practice..most of the free time u just wanna chill and relax before the next gig.

but there is a limit to speed. and i'm sure ALL drummers can achieve it with sufficient practice.. u have to admit that joey has pretty good speed. and he is able to match it with his band and stuff.. but don't just keep idoling that part of him. it's time to open up ur range of music. check out virgil donati and thomas lang..espacially virgil..both have real kick ass double pedaling that probably took years to acieve that state and imo i think they deserve more recognition in terms of their double pedaling speed and techniques.

i'm sure drummers like dave weckl, or steve gadd maybe? (haha, unlikely) can play watever joey can play..just that their style of music doesn't require such speed. but more of hand techniques and originality of jazz shuffles. unlike what joey's playing which is just pure speed.

it'll be good if any of u guys can share some videos of joey playing jazz. i'm sure that'll change the perspective of many pple..

ok sorry for length posts =) my 10 cents..

You mean you've never heard of Hate Eternal? That's one of the sickest death metal bands around but Roddy isn't just that. I've heard him play jazz and afro-cuban stuff that was surprisingly good. He also does session work. Try derekroddy.com.

The above two clips from his site show him cutting drums along to tracks laid down by the other members of Hate Eternal. Now not everybody can stomach this stuff but you gotta admit that his playing is superb. Tight, fast and clean.

yea true.. i wasn't able to appreciate wat he was playing.. but those are darn fast stuff..not technical though..but amazing speed..

Derek Roddy is sick. And so is Nile's latest drummer George Kollias. I prefer Kollias's playing over Roddy in Nile. But both are insanely fast. Check out drummers from The Dillinger Escape Plan, Origin (1st two albums), The Red Chord, Despised Icon, Ion Dissodance, Into The Moat, Capharnaum, Cephalic Carnage, Burnt By The Sun, Misery Index, Neuraxis, The End, Commit Suicide and currently the band that makes me cry everytime I listen to them is NECROPHAGIST.

this thread is great! all off topic. *laughs. it started out with joey, end up with derek roddy. *laughs. well, looked through all the posts.

he can say what he wants about a certain drummer. praise or discriminate. it's all up to personal preference. somebody are into jazz, blues and stuff. they will think joey's crap, skills and lack of feel blah blah blah.

to a metalhead, joey's drumming is god like. technical or not? it's in the beholders' eyes. joey's drumming may be technical to some but not all. so it's still personal preference. seen alot of thread with this personal preference crap. it will never end. it's a vicious cycle.

just my opinion though. sorry if those words i've said hurts.
