... how do you get a joe satch tone?.. in the song 'always with me always with you.. ' how would you describe it?.. full and rounded?..

btw how do u define sustain?.. like the CS3.. not sure what can it do.. i noe the compressor can help clean off the dirt sound..

are there instances where you don't want sustain?.. not too sure.. hahaah.

Tone = Fingers + Guitar + Effects + Amp. Guitar, effects and amp u can buy to emulate

but u can't emulate the way he plays.

As for sustain, most guitarists are sustain junkies when it comes to soloing.

hmm.. sustain means like longer sounding??.. like when u do those bend ups? it doesn't die off so quickly?..

yeap longer sounding. not sure whether bend ups helps you sustain better though :?

I really like him and EJ ALOT. Really glad EJ and Satriani will be touring again :D

p/s not only their skills, their looks as well, find them really charming. Satriani is getting more and more handsome, where as EJ he doesnt really look like his age :D

Sub. +1. :D

A good technique to note to "length" sustain, is to use the whammy. :) Try it, esp those with Floyd Roses. You get more sustain doing vibrato with the whammy than normal finger vibrato.

Anyway, just to ask ask... how many of you out there feel Joe is in a sort of "slump"? I mean, he is certainly no longer his old days, and going after a more groove + note choices (which is almost solely pentatonics-based now, a far cry from Flying in a Blue Dream) style now.

I wouldn't call it a slump really - he's just become more experimental. Strange Beautiful Music was hardly what I expected from Satch (electronica!!), but it grew on me after a couple of listens.

The last album did have some of his classic touches - Searching was an amazing song. To me anyway Satch has always had that groovy feel.. I wouldn't mind something on the lines of Is There Love in Space again. The new album is out this month I believe ? 8) Let's see how that turns out - it'll take something absolutely horrendous to even suggest that he's lost it..

btw, have you seen the Satch Tapes dvd? The guy from Spinal Tap is hilarious :)

listened to the demo in HMV today... its quite nice actually. i really noticed the exceptional tone in that piece. is it just me or does it sound a lil different? did he use the new mo' joe pup?

IMO Engines of Creation is more experimental than the above-mentioned, in fact, it's Satriani's most non-traditional release in his discography. the materials in this LP is genius grade, personally, it surpasses all other Satriani releases in terms of form but many of us here aren't too comfortable with the machine laden compositions.
