rork,
i see all this talk on poor how do you define poor? how many of you have actually experience being 'poor'? because the bottom 10% of the income bracket is still very much better off than majority of the people around the world.

the poor do not become poor because of tax. its mostly due to problem of unemployment. In the case of singapore the unemployment is largely due to structural reasons, which is solved via OTHER methods. Havent the govt placed enough emphasis on unemployment.. education, life long learning? Distributing wealth from the budget surplus wont do much good at all.

and there exists no fixed formula of how much we should spend on welfare for optimum benefits, it differs from country to country, and being singapore, u know we're different in alot of aspects. Our economy is small, our population is small, for the good of everyone, singapore is meant to be one party state 'democracy'. Everything works differently in here, what makes you think we've to follow other developed countries? they have problems of their own too.

Singapore is better off with govt or govt-related families monopolising the essential services,Its a win win situation for both the company and for us because he market is too small to provide much freedom in the market.

one more thing, have it occurred to you that the tax has other intended purpose besides increasing the budget?

You can be the moron that you want to be. Afterall, you did insist that you smell up other people's arsehole - in your own words.

We were having a dialog on the recent GST hikes and you come in and make sweeping genelisations involving your father, one of his salesmen and then you added your uncle into the mix. When asked what your father, his salesmen and youruncle has to do with the GST and the poor here in Singapore, you turn into a knot that even you cannot untie yourself.

Everyone is entitled to their own views or those of others with which they choose to adopt for how long and how far they deem fit.

OK. you are right Singaporeans are very rich when compared to the world's poorest. We shouldn't have to do anything until a large percentage of SIngaporeans become the world's poorest. Until then the poor in Singapore should be damn happy that they are not the world's poorest.

Further, the poor which includes a large number of elderly, the physically and mentally disabled, and people who for one reason or another just find themselves in such a situation - such as being born into a family that is poor or with disabled parents, should just blame themselves for being in their situation.

singapore is meant to be one party state 'democracy'

Yah right! And I was meant to be the world's richest man. So pay up dude! You sound like a very intelligent being. In another time and place you will be a very good communist. Come to think about it, China and North Korea will like to have citizens like you. Why are you here in Singapore where there is no true democracy - that is a one-party state?

Singapore is better off with govt or govt-related families monopolising the essential services,Its a win win situation for both the company and for us because he market is too small to provide much freedom in the market.

Yes! Again you are so right. We should all pay higher prices for services and goods thanks to these monopolies. Without these monopolies we would be paying less and that is no good for Singaporeans to be paying less for their housing, water, electricity etc. We should all be glad to pay more. People will not become poor from paying taxes. Ah right. Taxes will not disaffect the poor. Ah. Another right.

Like I said, we all have the right to our opinions. I admire your courage to come out into the open to share yours.

Cheers
RoRK

It's called 'an illustration for morons.' Tell me, how is it a "sweeping generalization" to say "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."?

Like I said to doubledecker earlier, the sales rep can be kicked out any time. It's a democracy in our country, they can be kicked out of power any time, but people continue to vote for them. Why? Because if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

RoRk, if you have so much fucking issue with those people, take some fucking action, why don't you? Go out and be an anti-men-in-white activist if you feel so strongly against them.

I abhor people like you who bitch about every single fucking thing which the government does. We get the fucking idea already. Bitch bitch bitch bitch all fucking day, and in the end what do you achieve? Absolutely nothing.

As I mentioned earlier, this is a discussion, and if you are going to be so fucking bull-headed, you are just going to end up getting this thread locked.

I'm interested in hearing why you feel so strongly against the latest gst hike, or any number of other policies that you believe are "monopolies" by "a certain group of people". Are you one of the "poor" "suffering from it? If you wish to continue this discussion please take it elsewhere, and you are more than welcome to look me up outside of this thread.

sheesh..everyone seem to be having a bad morning..

GRRRR...makes me angry..i flame people..i wanna screw them up!!!

hahaha..kidding..chill guys.

Hmmm if you can own a PC and internet connection to post on this forum and have enough money to buy musical instrutments, I dont think u are poor. Costs are always rising, not happy with the gov, form a party and run for gov. if not then emigrate to other country. Less talk more rock.

HAHAHAHAHA. You dont seem to know what you're talking about, worst still u try to ridicule something that you dont seem to know at all.you've just shot urself in the foot. I admire your courage too :D .

its not an oppinion, its is a proven fact.

you dont seem to be able to answer this very fundamental question? I doubt you would understand how tax affects the poor

due to Singapore inherent limitations and constraints, Singapore cannot afford a multi party state.

Today, I am going to do something good for the less fortunate in this country. And I will certainly try to do something better than raising the GST for them or supporting such moves. ROFLMAO!

Dandy. Name it.

they give you the simi simi electronic shares, then raise the gst. ideally to cover the increase. but it's blatant i get 400-700 shares and have to tahan 3-5 years of gst robbery dracula rule nonsese or whatever you call it.

like how $3.95 seems closer to $3 than $4 to consumers. magic number nonsense.

That's odd. Or has the idea man been smoking us all along...? 8)

Those were some nice theories you fed us earlier. Where'd you learn about em? Wikipedia?

The reason for the votes I am sure by now, it is a common fact. Timing of "aid package", timing of "price hike" thereafter. After so many elections, is it not obvious. Votes from over 90% long long ago ... dropping to the current 60+% ... it tells a tale of trust is slowly eroded as citizens starts to see unanswered suspicions go forgotten or redirected.

I abhor people like you who bitch about every single loving thing which the government does. We get the loving idea already. Bitch bitch bitch bitch all loving day, and in the end what do you achieve? Absolutely nothing.

Which leads us to the point, a thief with loot in his house - will he not be worried if someone has suspicions and search his house? I am sure many people wish to make a difference - issue is, are the current leaders mentally prepared to be checked and be punished should there be any wrongdoings? Can they afford to?

Many would argue, why should we have international bodies to check through accounts? In local sense, it is also due to the common belief that "external forces should not meddle with domestic politics". If nothing wrong is going on, would you be afraid?

Over so many elections, it is also evident, if you are not in the same league as them, you can forget about it. Before you even attempt, they have already shut you down. Do we need any living examples?

I'm interested in hearing why you feel so strongly against the latest gst hike, or any number of other policies that you believe are "monopolies" by "a certain group of people"...

There are too many instances that this has been proven. Even IMF chief has mentioned the same thing, Singapore brought about a bad name for herself, and it's all self-inflicted.

For so many "publicized" talks, some "officials" avoid answering the question directly. Questions by citizens, questions by opposition, questions by international bodies, questions by civil rights groups etc etc. There are alot of question marks in alot of decisions made, especially when it comes to transparency. If one starts to argue, who are we to question the govt? True, masters are to be respected. However, these money came from our pocket, that gives us a right to question the usage of this extra 2% of it, and where this 2% is going to.

Some others would come to the point, what evidence or proof do some have? Let's take for example, we have an accused person. If there is no investigation, how do you turn up all these dirty work? Or are we going to appoint a head of investigation who happens to be a closed contact or rather an "ally" to the accused person? Perhaps the head of investigation depends on the accused person for his job safety? There are instances of shady deals relating to govt officials but not investigated by independent bodies like CPIB. Over time, over years, again - the issue is forgotten by turning the attention to something else.

Of course, alot of us do not feel a need to change the system. Afterall, 40 years sitting in comfort zone, it is very difficult to get that person to make a change. He's getting too comfortable with it already.
