Is bassist is a left behind band player nowadays??

bass to me is like the chili in a curry...

a must!!!

in my band, my bassist is the power house. nid his groove, slaps bla bla
i'm more to a back up!

eh that one is different. cos they got keyboard. like that dun even need guitar, just use keyboard all the way. nowadays kaoss pad also quite happening

I think there's a lack of talented bassists around, I mean there are tons of guitar players who play the bass inorder to fill up the 'bassist spot'. So perhaps maybe thats why the bass tends to be neglected. I'm not saying that there are no talented/serious bassists around, what I'm trying to say is that there are tons of bassists who just follow/play the root note of the chord progression for the guitar. Either that or I'm just oblivious to whats really happening.

yellowstrat: so bass players are more important than guitarists?

In a way...yes. A band with a keyboardist can do without a guitar but cannot do without a bass. Unless you are taking about techno/electronic music where everything is done by keyboards and computers, then everyone will be out of job liao...sianz

i think every instrument brings something unique. To me, no instrument is more important than another.
but what do i know eh? ;)

anybody know me??

i would like to say hi...helloo smile smile

im from black cats...

weee im on s.o.f.t...

sorry on my nutty mood...haha holidays mah!!!

The answer is of course how the instrument is being utilized. If the bassist himself does not want to stand out or sound interesting, no one can help him. Many ppl think bass guitar is the easiest to master cos the whole song can be played with just a few notes. But in the hands of a more creative player and he will be able to stand out!

here's an effin good reason why-

yeah got to agree with visa......

i pick up bass cos of this canadian avant garde band Unexpect....so damn awesome bassist......9 string wohoooo!

so far i got only a 5 string hahaha ....

yeah bassist is also important in bands make it complete n heavier for the song n grooveness of it hehe

(to the thread-starter)
see your question is more or less answered in that quote.
these guys go into bass not cos of the music but because of the number of strings on some dudes bass. cos it makes it 'heavier'. and grooveness??wtf??

well the truth is most bassists, NOT ALL, but most, get into bass because-
a) they are guitarist rejects.
b) they just wanna be in a band cos its 'cool'.
c) they dug some guys antics on stage/ or the equipment he uses.

NOT for the music.
the time some dude will get on stage with an actual interest in bass instead of tryin to make it sound like a guitar or treating it as one.we'll have ourselves a musician.and a bloody good one.

ps: there isnt a word called 'grooveness'.
