Is an ESP guitar suitable for a beginner?

Hello, I not sure if this is the right section to post this as im rather new here.
But I wanna ask, is an ESP guitar suitable for a beginner? The type of music I wanna play is metal / alternative metal.

So far I've only had little experience with the guitar as I quit my guitar course after Stage 1 ended as I wasn't interested in acoustic guitar and never touched it since then. (I was pretty much 'forced' to choose acoustic) :/

The guitars I have in mind are all from ESP artist series. GrassRoots G-NH-70, GrassRoots G-A-68, GrassRoots G-U-65. They're the more cheaper ones which I can only afford to buy at the moment. Which do you guys recommend? Or are there cheaper alternatives?

Thanks,
Lycoris.

Well ESP guitars aren't exactly cheap so if you were to get them first hand for your first guitar, it's kinda risky as you never know if your taste for music / guitars would change.

In any case, a good guitar would be a good guitar at the end of the day. as long as you are comfortable with it and you like the sound, that's a good guitar. However, keep in mind that a good amp plays a part in this tone equation as well. choose wisely.

also, maybe you can tell us your budget? maybe we can help you narrow down your choices.

i don't deem cost or brand names to be factors affecting suitability. if the guitar clicks with you, then it's suitable. do take time to handle & hear the guitars in action as these will affect your choice as opposed to cost & brand names.

I know little about electric guitars, so what do i have to look out for if im getting a secondhand one? My budget is around $200 to $800.

You could probably get a decent LTD guitar 2nd hand. Well to start maybe check whether all the parts are working (you might need an amp / vox amplug). Second check the set up. Action too low / too high? take note of the neck relief too.

pricewise is dependent on how much you are willing to pay for it. For me as long as it's cheaper compared to buying first hand I'm fine but you have to do a decent amount of cross referencing.

my advice is try the guitar out first (at Davis). if you like it, scout for it 2nd hand. not avaliable 2nd hand? go first hand.

Umm.. May I know what's LTD, set-up, action and relief? Sorry, I don't know alot :/

LTD is a brand. look it up.

set up is the general state of playability its in. look it up.

action is height. look it up.

neck relief is like how bent the neck is. look it up.

you may not know alot. but im sure you know how to look things up. Google.

LTDs are just a sub brand under ESP. likewise with Navigator, Edwards & Grassroots.

LTD is not a bad brand. not only are they decent, they are pretty affordable as well. More wood selections compared to other popular brands like Ibanez.

You could head down to Davis, Music Theme or eve Guitar Connection to have a look. Compare the prices and do the math. Buying from a store is somewhat safer should anything screw up along the way.

Okay.. I sort of roughly know what those are now

I see.. Thanks! After some googling, I think I've pretty much convinced myself to get LTD F-50. I searched it on youtube and kinda like the sound of it. But of course I'll definitely try it out (if its available in the shops) to see how it really sounds like!

You can consider Schecter's lower end guitars. They fall under your budget, sound and play pretty well too.

it really doesn't work that way mate. I've owned an indonesian f50 and i loved it, great fretting capavility all the way to 24th and notes were still on pitch, but the newer ones are made in china, bought a Chinese viper and it was Terrible. the action was way off to begin with, the frets were popping out on the 15th and 17th, edges were way sharp 19th onwards, not to mention that at the top of the neck, the nut was cut off center. get someone to go with you when you go down and find the guitar you want. Focus on Construction, Fit, Intonation. Judge to see if setting up yourself can easily make it play better or if the guitar is already made "off" from the beginning, avoid those at all cost no matter how much you want that guitar at that moment.

with EMGs pre installed.

@AzNjT

you should have contacted the TS via pm instead of advertising your guitars here. there is a proper place for everything.

I think it doesnt matter if you are a beginner. If you got the $$$ just get the best guitar you can afford. Its a good investment. =)I recommend JACKSONS for metal.

I also prefer Jackson. The mid-level (Japanese-made, cost around a thousand and up) Jacksons are incredible and good value for money. Low-end Jacksons are good too, just a bit pricey. But I think it's worth it. :)

I tried an LTD VP-50 before and felt that it was a bit 'off'. Didn't like it very much. And yup it was a China-made VP-50. Not saying that Chinese-made guitars suck, my Ibanez GSA60 is Chinese-made and it's far superior to the VP-50 I tried, but that particular VP-50 I tried just didn't cut it.
